Gryphus 1 is the main protagonist of the video game Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception. He is an Aurelian Air Force pilot and the leader of the Gryphus Squadron, famous for his heroism during the Aurelian War.
Biography[]
In 2020, Democratic Republic of Leasath invaded its neighbour, Federal Republic of Aurelia. Its forces swiftly took over 95% of the country and were about to bomb one of the last Aurelian air bases. Gryphus 1 and his squadron scrambled to protect the base. They successfully shot down the bombers, but came under fire from the Gleipnir, losing all but three of their pilots. Gryphus 1 was one of the survivors of the attack and continued to battle Leasathian invaders. He eventually took down the Gleipnir, stripping the enemy of one of their most powerful weapons, and took part in the liberation of Aurelia's capital of Griswall.
Despite his defeat, however, the dictator of Leasath Diego Navarro was able to complete his new weapon, Fenrir, and planned to demonstrate its power to his people and the world. Gryphus 1 fought the Fenrir at the Archelon Fortress and destroyed it.
Fate[]
- If the player had completed fifteen missions during the campaign, the Aurelian War ends in Aurelia's favor. Albert Genette attempts to interview Gryphus 1, but he leaves for Cape Aubrey.
- If the player had completed less than fifteen missions, Gryphus 1's efforts turn out to have been not enough to completely defeat Leasath, although its forces start to understand that their fight is hopeless and gradually surrender. Gryphus 1 thus continues his fight.

- According to Crux, Gryphus 1 hates hot weather.
- His nickname "Southern Cross" comes from a constellation only seen in the Southern Hemisphere, where Aurelia is located.
- Gryphus 1 is known to have canonically flown both an F-22A Raptor and an XFA-24A Apalis, having used the latter to destroy the Gleipnir.
