Guardian Robots are supporting characters in Sonic the Comic comic book series. They are battle mechs created by the Echidna Empire. Millenia after the race's disappearance, they are assisting one of its last known members, Knuckles.
History[]
Past[]
Around 8000 years before the events of the series, the Drakon Empire invaded planet Mobius. To fight back, the Echidnas developed a number of weapons, including Guardian Robots. At some point after the war, the Echidnas disappeared, but their robots remained on the Floating Island.
Sonic the Comic[]
Dr. Zachary used one of the Guardian Robots to gain Knuckles' trust upon first meeting him, claiming that the robot was hunting him. He then had said robot attack Knuckles with the intention to kill him, before proceeding to try and crash the Floating Island into Mobius. Knuckles stopped Zachary and damaged the robot severely. He used its head as a replacement for the Master Emerald until he found a new one. It later turned out that the robot's head was still active and no longer hostile, and it agreed to advise Knuckles on various matters.
Zachary and Robotnik would use more Guardian Robots in their plan to capture the Emerald Hill folk and turn them into a wetware computer, but both the robots and the computer were shut down by an EMP caused by Super Sonic's escape from the Special Zone. The former were later brought back online and remained loyal to Knuckles and Porker, protecting the island from any threats.
Sonic the Comic Online![]
Guardian Robots were left behind when the Floating Island sank, but survived the sinking and brought the island back on surface. One robot was hired by Tails to help defeat Bleed. They later helped Knuckles and Tikal defeat Vichama by bringing the former back to life with the Guardian Stone. Though they continued to protect the island, it's implied that Knuckles and Porker are intending to eventually swap them out for Knuckles Metallixes.
Physiology[]
Guardian Robots are mechanical troopers of the Echidna army. They possess large spherical heads with red visors which double as cockpits, comparatively small torsos and long, stretching arms and legs. They can both operate autonomously and be controlled by a pilot inside their cockpit. The robots are capable of impressive feats in terms of strength, are equipped with flight engines and deadly laser emitters, and can absorb Chaos Energy. They are extremely long-lived, able to be reactivated even after spending thousands of years offline.
Trivia[]
- According to Nigel Dobbyn, he took inspiration from the Laputan robots seen in the animated film Castle in the Sky when designing Guardian Robots.
