Guardian Units of Nations, or G.U.N. in short, are major characters in the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
They are an international task force meant to research and combat alien threats to Earth, which once put them at odds with Sonic and his friends. They nevertheless continue to observe and fight any threats to peace on the planet.
History[]
Past[]
Guardian Units of Nations were around at least as early as 1974. When a meteor containing a life form crashed in Oklahoma, said life form, dubbed "Shadow", was seized by G.U.N. and researched in a secret lab with plans to use his powers as an energy source. But at one point, believing he was a threat, G.U.N. attempted to take Shadow away from Gerald and Maria Robotnik. As they fled into a room containing volatile explosive materials, Captain Walters tried to order the G.U.N. soldiers to stand down, but an errant shot when Walters grasped one's gun hit one of the containers, and triggered a massive explosion, killing Maria instantly. Walters had no choice afterwards but to have Gerald arrested and Shadow put in stasis on Prison Island for the foreseeable future. While in prison, Gerald agreed to build the Eclipse Cannon for G.U.N. to use in exchange for freedom, but secretly plotted to use it to destroy the Earth in revenge for Maria's death.
G.U.N. was eventually reformed into a black-ops organization headed by Gerald's grandson Dr. Ivo Robotnik, who performed many successful missions at the behest of the U.S. government. After Robotnik's defeat at the hands of Sonic and exile to the Mushroom Planet, the government began to hunt down and take out the doctor's allies, with some, like the Buyer and Agent Stone, managing to escape death.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)[]
After the events in the first film regarding Sonic and Robotnik, Commander Walters was placed in charge of the reformed G.U.N. Due to Sonic's unwillingness to join forces with the United States and other nations, he was deemed an extraterrestrial threat that had to be apprehended. To do so, Walters set up Operation: Catfish in Hawaii, having one of his agents, Randall Handel, attempt to marry Tom Wachowski's sister-in-law Rachel. When the wedding is crashed by Sonic and Tails emerging from a ring portal with an avalanche behind them, Walters springs the trap and has Sonic and Tails restrained, along with Tom when he tries to protect them. Later, Maddie and Rachel work together to rescue Tom, Sonic, and Tails, and get revenge on Walters for the ruse. After seeing the beam of energy from the Master Emerald in the distance, convinced that Robotnik had returned, Walters orders his forces to Green Hills to surround the Mean Bean Coffee Café, only to be confronted by Robotnik in his Master Emerald empowered state. Walters warns him that the U.S. federal government has already seized all his assets, but Robotnik responded by using his new powers to build the Giant Eggman Robot from G.U.N.'s vehicles, weapons, and whatever technology he could get his hands on. Outmatched and out-gunned by the giant mech, Walters orders his forces to retreat. After Super Sonic defeats the robot and Robotnik appears to perish with it, Walters has his forces scavenge the area for any sign of him, but are unaware that Agent Stone is eavesdropping on their conversation. During their talk, one of Walters' agents reveals that they found information dating back 50 years regarding Robotnik in their databases, and Walters realizes to his horror that it involved Project Shadow.
Knuckles[]
The organization continued to monitor Team Sonic's activities and whereabouts. Two G.U.N. agents, Mason and Willoughby, defected to the Buyer's side after being dissatisfied with the job they were given, banishing the loyalist Agent Fairley to Mushroom Planet in the process.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)[]
On Prison Island in Tokyo Bay, two G.U.N. agents are watching over the containment vessel holding Shadow the Hedgehog. When their monitors indicate Shadow's vitals are becoming active, they sound the alarm and have several soldiers secure the room and take aim at Shadow's pod. When it appears he goes inactive again, the men breathe a sigh of relief, but it is short-lived, as Shadow suddenly awakens, breaks out of his containment vessel, and overpowers the guards before blasting his way out of the facility and heading for nearby Tokyo.
As he soon starts to cause a panic in one busy intersection in Tokyo's Shibuya district, more G.U.N. forces, along with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, surround him and order him to surrender. Angered, Shadow unleashes his fury on the G.U.N. forces and Japanese law enforcement. Back in Green Hills, a camping trip by the Wachowskis and Team Sonic is interrupted when G.U.N. Director Rockwell arrives to ask for Team Sonic's help with dealing with Shadow in Tokyo. Using a ring portal, Rockwell's helicopter flies them to Tokyo, and when Team Sonic arrive in the heart of the intersection where Shadow was surrounded earlier, the place is littered with destroyed Keishichō patrol cruisers and G.U.N. vehicles. Shadow then appears, easily overpowers Team Sonic, grabs a G.U.N. motorcycle and laser pistol, and makes his escape. Despite Sonic's effort to keep up with him, Sonic is bested once more by Shadow. Realizing they need more information on him, Team Sonic go to meet with Commander Walters at a local Chao Garden restaurant.
It is there that Walters explains Shadow's origins to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. However, the restaurant is then attacked by Badnik drones, and Walters is critically injured. Realizing he won't make it, Walters entrusts Sonic with a keycard he was carrying before succumbing to his wounds. When G.U.N. and Keishichō reinforcements arrive at the restaurant, Rockwell finds Walters' body, the keycard missing, and a photo of Team Sonic that was taken moments before the restaurant was attacked. Believing Sonic stole the keycard from Walters, reinforcing her belief that Team Sonic couldn't be trusted, Rockwell vows to get the keycard back.
Shadow and Team Sonic's paths cross again at the abandoned G.U.N. base where Shadow had originally lived with Gerald Robotnik and his granddaughter Maria. After capturing Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, Shadow leaves with Eggman, Gerald, and Agent Stone, while leaving behind a miniature black hole to erase his past and have the base, his old home, and anything left of Maria, to be sucked into oblivion. Team Sonic barely escape thanks to a ring portal before the entire mountain is sucked into the event horizon, leaving only a crater behind where the base once was.
Upon learning that the second keycard is stored in G.U.N. headquarters in London, both Team Sonic and the Robotniks attempt to infiltrate the building to reach the vault where the card is. Tom and Maddie enter the building disguised as Randall and Rachel, but upon reaching the server room, have to quickly avoid being caught by Director Rockwell when she passes with several soldiers after Maddie had disguised herself as Rockwell to get access to the server room. Despite their efforts, Sonic, Tails, Tom, Maddie, and the Robotniks are all captured by Rockwell and her men, and she takes personal custody of the second keycard. However, Knuckles breaks into the room, and when he destroys Rockwell's controls for the gravity manipulation system in the vault, Rockwell and her men are subjected to their own trap with everyone else. Only when Sonic rescues Tom, Maddie, and Tails from some falling debris, disarming the system by hitting it with an EMP from his chaos energy, does Rockwell recover, grab the keycard, and escape. However, she is later confronted by a seemingly-alive Commander Walters, who asks for the keycard. Not to disobey her superior, she hands it over, only for Walters to be Tom in disguise. Unfortunately, Tom is confronted by Shadow while still disguised as Walters, and due to Shadow blaming Walters for Maria's death, is brutally attacked by Shadow, severely injuring him, and allowing Shadow to get the other keycard, rescue the Robotniks, and make their escape. As G.U.N. reinforcements and both the London City Police and Metropolitan Police swarm G.U.N. HQ, Tom is taken to the hospital by the London Ambulance Service, while Sonic, livid over Tom being injured, decides to recover the Master Emerald, use the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic, and attempt to stop Shadow and the Robotniks himself, blinded and consumed by revenge. G.U.N.'s subsequent fate and actions are currently unknown, though it can somewhat be implied that they were aware of the Eclipse Cannons activation, eventual destruction, as well as Team Sonic's attempt to destroy it and the mishaps that happened previously.

Trivia[]
- Information about the foundation of G.U.N. in the Sonic Cinematic Universe seems to be inconsistent. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Commander Walters states G.U.N. was founded after the events of the first movie to protect Earth from potential alien threats. This is backed up in the Knuckles series when The Buyer reveals the organisation was formed from a special ops program once run by Dr. Robotnik. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 shows G.U.N. was apparently operating for at least 50 years, much longer than it was previously claimed. It should also be noted that the G.U.N. logo could be seen on the outfits of government agents in the first movie, although this is possibly just a reference that had no impact on the canon.
- G.U.N.'s primary objective of observing and neutralizing alien threats to Earth is reminiscent of Operation Starwatch from Sonic the Comic series.
