“ | GUN - An abbreviation of "Guardian Units of Nation", the name for the national defence forces. They are a military organization established to respond to major criminal cases and domestic conflicts. | „ |
~ GUN's description in the Sonic Adventure 2 manual. |
The Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.) are recurring characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
It is a worldwide military and law enforcement organization. Run by its commander Abraham Tower, G.U.N. seeks to protect the Earth from all sorts of threats, including Dr. Eggman and the Black Arms.
G.U.N. has vast resources, including an army of soldiers and peacekeepers, fighter planes and other instruments of warfare. While G.U.N. receives orders from the President of the United Federation, it operates under the sole discretion of the Commander, who has been known to use G.U.N.'s resources to bring down enemies.
When first introduced in Sonic Adventure 2 as an antagonistic faction, G.U.N. is portrayed as ruthless with absolutely no sympathetic qualities. Their raid on the ARK and killing of Maria Robotnik triggered the events of the game, they mistakenly arrest Sonic and relentlessly hunt him down without even attempting to hear his side of the story, and show zero concern over any of the potential collateral damage they're causing during their pursuit of him. Come Shadow the Hedgehog, they're shown in a much better light, as while they still antagonize Shadow, they're shown to have the planet's best interest at heart and bravely fight off the Black Arms invasion. By Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), they're portrayed as being completely heroic and are nothing but helpful to Shadow and his allies.
History[]
Sonic Adventure 2[]
The army believed that Gerald Robotnik's research would be a threat to the planet, and so organized a plan to shut down ARK and destroy Project Shadow. They would invade the ARK under the ploy that there was an accident and do away with anybody that worked on Project Shadow. They then captured the Biolizard and encapsulated it. However the then-finished project, Shadow the Hedgehog, fled in an escape capsule. During the video game Sonic Adventure 2 the G.U.N. army's robots are constant enemies, and pursue both villains and Sonic's group due to the latter having been inadvertently framed for theft by Shadow.
Shadow the Hedgehog[]
The role of GUN in Shadow the Hedgehog's plot is to repel the invasion of Earth by the forces of the Black Arms by any means necessary - including the assistance from Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends. During the opening FMV sequence, it is shown that Earth is being overrun, with GUN's forces almost helpless - hence the temporary alliance. It is also strongly hinted during the game and FMV sequences that GUN's mission is the investigation (and possible destruction) of Shadow himself, depending on the player's moral choices within the game. Their attempts at doing this are mainly caused by the commander of GUN due to his personal hatred of Shadow, although in one ending he realized he was wrong to blame the hedgehog.
GUN's role in Sonic Adventure 2 was also expanded in Shadow the Hedgehog, where one of the levels takes Shadow and Maria through the colony during the GUN incursion and it also shows Shadow fighting one of the weapons after they harm Maria. This is the first and only game so far where GUN is shown directly allied with Sonic and his friends.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]
“ | Transmission from HQ. There's an SOS coming from Dr. Eggman's Base. Our last communication with our agent was 26 hours ago. We expect an immediate rescue, Shadow the Hedgehog. | „ |
~ GUN HQ |
When Shadow and the military made alliances, their HQ sent him to rescue Rouge from Dr. Eggman's base.
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[]
“ | The International Security Organization, G.U.N., has begun to investigate the event. | „ |
~ News reporter. |
The military was mentioned on the news, when they investigated what's going on the MeteorTech's robots no longer responding to commands, running amok all over the entire world.
Sonic X Shadow Generations[]
“ | I already told you; G.U.N detected an unusual bio-signature aboard the ARK. I'm not leaving until I eliminate any possible threat. | „ |
~ Shadow to Rouge. |
GUN made an appearance in City Escape and Radical Highway, where they antagonize not only Sonic again, but Classic Sonic as well. Before Sonic's birthday party in Shadow Generations, GUN sent Shadow to find an unusul bio-signature aboard the Space Colony ARK. the threat turned out to be Black Doom who survived his defeat, and after the destruction of the Black Comet.
Sonic Forces[]
While GUN doesn't make a physical appearance in the game nor it gets mentioned, in the second episode of TailsTube web series Dr. Eggman claims to have "put them in their place" during the events of the game. It was later revealed in the 7th Twitter Takeover that Eggman dissolved G.U.N. when he took over the world.
Sonic Frontiers[]
Several digital copies of GUN tanks and helicopters appear in Cyber Space, some of them attacking both Sonic and Eggman when encountering them.

Pre-Super Genesis Wave[]
Guardian Units of the Nation are the United Federation's military force, formed to protect various human and Overlander territories. Aside from that, its role in the story is largely the same as in the games' canon.
Post-Super Genesis Wave[]
In the rebooted timeline, Guardian Units of the Nation have largely the same role as in the games' canon. They also take Overland's place as the Kingdom of Acorn's rivals during a period of tension between Mobians and humans. Dr. Eggman and Snively used to work for the organization before defecting to the Acorn Archipelago and misleading the king into believing G.U.N. was going to attack. It's implied that G.U.N. indeed used to be a warmongering organization before Abraham Tower reformed it.
Trivia[]
- Official sources initially seemed to go back and forward on whether G.U.N. was an international organization or solely under the United Federation's jurisdiction, although later sources seem to indicate the former. In the Archie Comics, where the United Federation is a world government, both descriptions fit the organization.
