“ | I heard that humans were bad creatures. But they're in fact, nice. All Birdpia's citizens would be surprised if I told them that I came to the human world... | „ |
~ Gusuke |
Gusuke is one of the main protagonists of the anime movie Doraemon: Nobita and the Winged Braves. He is a Birdpian boy who is unable to fly due to a childhood trauma, and who leads the main heroes to discover his world, Birdpia. It's later revealed that he is in fact the son of Icarus, Birdpia's legendary hero.
He was voiced by Kyōko Tongū.
Appearance[]
Gusuke is a Birdpian kid with gray fur and yellow beak. He wears a pair of red googles with blue stripes, fitting for a pilot like him. He also wears red clothes with a yellow collar, a blue belt, white gloves, and yellow booths.
Personality[]
Gusuke is a very nice person, and desires to become a member of the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops. Due to his childhood trauma, he can't fly due to being afraid of height until the end of the movie.
He also easily befriends others and doesn't hold the same misanthropic view that his fellow Birdpians have. Gusuke is very adventurous and likes to explore strange places, even if it derails his daily schedules, much to the worry of his family and Milk.
Like Nobita, Gusuke is bullied and insecure about his capabilities, but once pushed to the corner, he can unlock his true potential. This is shown when he learns to fly himself quickly just to rescue Nobita from falling.
History[]
Past[]
Gusuke was born to Icarus and Odia. However, his egg hatched during a stormy night, leading to him falling from his mother's basket while his parents were flying. Fortunately, he fell into the arm of a Birdpian woman, who then adopted him alongside her husband. Due to the trauma, Gusuke was unable to fly as he couldn't train without recalling the experience, although he nevertheless grew up to be adventurous and befriended Milk, a girl who lived next door, and the two went to school together. Gusuke was frequently bullied by Tsubakuro and Tobio thanks to his inability to fly, although Milk always defended him. He also befriended Professor Hou, who considered Gusuke his son.
Not long prior to the movie's events, Gusuke created a map from the places he went when going to school (which led to him being late multiple times). The map caught his school's attention, and was chosen for their wall newspaper project. After the school however, Tsubakuro and Tobio forcefully took it away and fulfilled it, much to Gusuke's sadness after he managed to take it back thanks to Milk's help. However, after Milk gave him an advice, he spent days to expand it further.
Gusuke has also explored the human world multiple times against others' will.
Doraemon: Nobita and the Winged Braves[]
One day, when Gusuke is exploring the human world, he accidentally falls into the ground and has his plane damaged. Doraemon, Nobita and Shizuka then give him shelter and nurture him back to health while fixing his plane. During this time, he befriends them. Once he's healed and his plane is restored, he departs back to Birdpia, but Suneo and Gian, having discovered him, grabs Gusuke's plane and are dragged to it as well, forcing Doraemon, Nobita and Shizuka to follow them through the portal to Birdpia.
Once they're there, Gusuke, Suneo and Gian fall into below, but the latter two are rescued by the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops, who imprison them to wait for their execution, while Gusuke falls into the ground and has his plane damaged yet again. He then reunites with the other three in Professor Hou's house, and helps them to rescue Suneo and Gian. Once it's accomplished and the protagonists have disguised themselves as Birdpians, he and Professor Hou tell them about the history of Birdpians' hatred for humans: Years ago, Commander Seagrid, then only an ordinary trooper, was shot by a human when he was rescuing birds from the human world. They then shows the main characters the Perched Tree, which legends said that the Birdpian Icarus had managed to fly to its top. Just then Milk appears and asks him where did he go and tells him to go home, with the main characters following them.
During the dinner, Gusuke informs the protagonists about the annual Rally Icarus Race, which is created to honor Icarus and recruit new members for the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops, and invites the them to join. Just then, he is mocked by a passing-through Seagrid and his second-in-command, Colonel Babylon for his inability to fly, much to Milk's anger. Gusuke then tells the story of his adoption and inability to fly to the main characters. During the Rally Icarus Race, Gusuke and Tsubakuro win the competition, but Seagrid, having learned of Gusuke's aid in rescuing Suneo and Gian, disqualifies Gusuke not only of his victory but also from joining any future Rally Icarus race under the excuse of him "not flying naturally", leading to the boy having a breakdown. As a result, Tsubakuro becomes the sole champion. Later, the main group sans Suneo and Gian (who are joining the troops at the time) discover that Professor Hou has disappeared and learn about the demonic dragon Phoenixia via the Translation Jelly, while Gusuke is learning to fly himself. After learning that Seagrid is intending to unleash Phoenixia to the human world, Gusuke alongside the others travel to the prison island to find Icarus, and manage to convince him to free himself and rescue Birdpia. During the travel, the heroes find a projector which projects a hologram of Mamoru Torino, a 23rd-century ornithologist who wanted to create a safe haven for birds, which eventually led to the creation of Birdopia, an alternate timeline of the human world.
They manage to rescue Suneo, Gian and Professor Hou from Seagrid's imprisonment, but the vulture commander has successfully awakened Phoenixia from its slumber. Worse yet, thanks to Colonel Babylon's intervenation, Doraemon's Evolution Ray accidentally makes the dragon even larger, and thus much more dangerous and out of Seagrid's control. Gusuke and his friends then help to rescue the Birdpians while fighting Phoenixia; after Icarus is injured during the fight, he informs the kids about Professor Torino's time machine on top of the Perched Tree. When they try to reach there however, Phoenixia destroys Gusuke's plane and smashes Nobita's Birdpia hat out, causing the latter to fall. Afraid of losing his newfound friend, Gusuke risks himself to rescue Nobita, learning to fly in the process. Now with his newfound ability, Gusuke lures Phoenixia to the Tree's top, where he, Nobita and Doraemon use the time machine to attack the dragon. As the attacks fail, Doraemon instead transports the time machine with Phoenixia back to billions of years in the past, saving Birdpia.
Thanks to his deeds, Gusuke is promoted by the Birdpian President to be the new Commander of the troops. He then says goodbye to his human friends and orders the troops to direct them to their home.
