Guy is the titular main protagonist of 20th Century Studios' 2021 sci-fi action comedy film Free Guy.
Guy was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds who also played Deadpool in the X-Men films, Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity, Nick Walker in R.I.P.D., Paul Conroy in Buried, Michael Bryce in The Hitman's Bodyguard, Cal in IF, and voiced Guy in The Croods, Pikachu in Detective Pikachu and Theo in Turbo.

Two programmers, Millie Rusk and Walter "Keys" McKey created a programming that creates complex AI for the NPCs of their game, Free Life. It was to be published by Soonami Games, one of the largest gaming companies in the world. However, the game was left unpublished due to poor focus group test results. Antwan Hovachelik, the CEO of Soonami Games, illegally stole the code to use in a violent, action-oriented game called Free City.
Within Free City, Guy is an NPC (nonplayer character), who works as a bank teller constantly looking for a special someone in Free City. Guy lived a simple life, where he would wake up, greet his fish Goldie, watch the weather forecast as he eats breakfast, mess with his blinds, go to work, go to bed, and continue the cycle.
Free Guy[]
One day, Guy spots the avatar of Millie, who is searching for evidence that Antwan stole her and Keys' game code, and becomes infatuated. He follows her, only to get run over by a train. The next day, Guy breaks out of the cycle and accidentally kills a bank robber, stealing his sunglasses. The sunglasses allow Guy to play like a real-life player. He collected money from a deceased player and bought a pair of shoes he was unable to afford earlier.
Tech support workers Keys (who now works at Soonami) and Mouser suspect Guy is a hacker, and pursue him, for players cannot use NPC skins at risk of causing in-game issues. A chase ensues through a nearby construction site, resulting in Guy getting run over after assuming he escaped.
Wanting to speak with Millie, Guy follows her, accidentally ruining her mission to obtain evidence. Millie assumes Guy is a novice player, and tells him that he needs to surpass level 100 if he wants to work together, as new players can not use more advanced weapons such as grenades. Guy helps various NPCs to level up rather than hurting them, and gets to level 102. In doing so, Guy also gains massive attention from the media due to his benevolent means of leveling up. Guy infiltrates Millie's mission via motorcycle and fights off the NPC security guards before the assignment becomes too overwhelming for both of them, forcing them to flee. Guy shows Millie to a more peaceful area of Free City before getting bubblegum ice cream and kissing (which weirds Millie out in real life).
Keys, who had been doing research to find out who Guy is, informs Millie that Guy is a sentient artificially intelligent rather than an actual player, as well as figuring out that Free City will be deleted upon the release of Free City 2, which will kill all the sentient NPCs. Thus, he suggests that Millie reveal to Guy the truth about his world so the latter could help them from within the game.
Millie returns to the Guy and takes him to the multiplayer lounge, where Millie reveals to him that he's a background character in a video game. Guy storms off, and nihilistically rants to his fellow NPCs about how they're not real before being crashed into by two cars. Guy visits Buddy, his best friend and a security guard at the bank, and asks him what he would do if he found out he wasn't real. Buddy, though confused by the prospect, explains he wouldn't care if he was real or not, as the moments he has in life still hold value. Inspired, Guy convinces Buddy to help him break into the base to obtain evidence for Millie, as Buddy knows all the security guards in Free City. Because of Guy's popularity, the owner of the base, Revenjamin Buttons, hands over the evidence for free, though he makes some advances that discomfort Guy. Guy brings Millie the evidence, which shows them that the setting of Free Life remains in Free City, but beyond the visible map.
Unfortunately, Antwan orders Mouser to restart the server, and thus Guy's artificial intelligence, because Guy has unknowingly encouraged players to see NPCs in a different light, threatening the pre-sales of the Free City 2. Keys informs Millie that Guy still has his memories, but they are suppressed.
Millie attempts to retrieve Guy's memories, to no avail. She is forced to take him hostage from his bank, causing the police to pursue her. She uses a rocket launcher to destroy the approaching police car before kissing Guy, restoring his memories. Guy then shows Millie the reflection of the remnant of Free Life in his window shades, revealing their location. Guy and Millie then formulate a plan with the rest of the NPCs.
Guy and Millie drive to Hitman's Beach, where Free Life's island is hidden. Antwan attempts to send police after them, but all the NPCs have rejected their duties and are hanging out in Free City's coffee shop. Antwan orders Mouser to turn off respawn and kill them in the game through other means as Antwan searches for Keys, realizing that the latter is helping Guy and Millie. Mouser attempts to kill Guy and Millie by crushing their car between two buildings and throwing vehicles at them, to no success, as Keys helps them escape with a ramp. Antwan realizes where Guy and Millie are headed, forcing Antwan to boot all players from Free City to get rid of Millie, and send an unfinished an unfinished brutish AI called Dude to get rid of Guy. At the same time, he fires Keys. Guy is forced to fight Dude, when Buddy shows up on a motor scooter, who Dude quickly incapacitates. Guy nearly gets killed, but reforms his opponent when Guy forces the sunglasses on Dude, distracting the brute with the game that Free City is.
Guy and Buddy then run along a bridge Keys built that leads to the island. Out of options, Antwan begins destroying the Free City servers with a fire axe (forcing him to fire Mouser, who realized the truth), destroying the map and the bridge, threatening the lives of all the NPC citizens, as well as seemingly killing Buddy. Guy keeps running and ultimately makes it to the island, showing the world the proof that Antwan stole the game's code from Free Life.
In real life, Millie confronts Antwan before he can smash the final server. She convinces him to give her the server, promising to relent on her lawsuit, and allowing Antwan to retain the profits and ownership of Free City.
Guy now lives in Free City. He convinces Millie that he'll be alright without her, along with making her realize that Guy's programming consists of a love letter from Keys. Guy goes on a walk alongside a pacified Dude, when Buddy is revealed to have survived. With the bank gone, Buddy questions what they do from that point onward, to which Guy responds "whatever we want". The two head off to enjoy their new life in Free City as the movie ends.
