Guy is an NPC, otherwise known as a nonplayer character who was a background bank-teller constantly looking for a special someone in an open-world video game.
Before he found his special someone, Guy lived a simple life, where he would wake up, greet his pet goldfish, watch TV, mess with his blinds, go to work, go to bed, and continue the cycle.
Free Guy
One day, when Guy walks with his best friend, he stumbles upon his special someone and falls in love, causing his internal network to grow and develop. As time passes, he grows aware enough to stop a real-life player and grab their glasses to see from a new point of view.
Thus, giving him a video game ability allows him to play like a real-life player with this new worldview. He collected money and bought shoes he wanted before being hunted by the game's moderators. They thought he was a hacker, as players cannot use NPC skins. A chase ensues, and Guy makes the mods believe they got him.
Now, Guy, wanting to find his love life, runs after them before getting hit by a train and respawn, causing Guy to become more aware. He proceeds to tell his friend and offers a chance to become more aware. He declines, and Guy respects his choice.
Guy then meets up with his special someone before he ruins their mission. Guy's special someone concludes that he at least needs to be over level 100 want to work together as new players can not use more advanced weapons.
With some advice from his special someone, Guy helps various NPC's to gain EXP; The opposite of what the video game suggests, and levels up to over 102. At the time, Guy also gains massive attention from other players because he stops them and levels up significantly differently from them.
Guy crashes in towards his special someone's mission and helps before the assignment becomes too overwhelming for both of them, causing them to leave. Guy shows his special someone a more peaceful area of the video game before both of them gets ice cream and kisses.
Thanks to one of the video game developers telling them. His special someone finds out that Guy is a nonplayer character, causing them to reveal this revelation to him, leaving Guy incredibly disillusioned and depressed with his life.
He comes over to his best friend's house and asks what they would do if they find out their life was a video game; the discussion ends with some advice from his friend that this moment he experiences is real. Thanks to Guy, they both due to the mission that his special someone could not perform.
Thanks to Guy's popularity, one of the people who work in the mission gives them what he wants, letting Guy and his friend end the mission, disband, and bring the item his special someone wants.
Unfortunately, the prominent leader of the game orders that his co-worker shut down the servers to restart Guy's article intelligence. Because Guy has unknowingly encouraged players to see NPC's in a different light, threatening the sales of the sequel video game, which is all about hurting NPC's.
His special someone finds out and, thanks to one of the video game developers giving their advice, Guy still has his memories, but they are suppressed. His special someone attempts to activate them by kissing Guy; with his memories back, they both proceed to find the location that his special someone wants.
Unfortunately, at the same time, the leader of the video game Guy is in proceeds to chop down and destroy the servers due to sales becoming threaten due to Guy. With the servers getting destroyed, the videogame begins to malfunction more and more until the game's unstableness threatens the entire game to become destroyed.
One of the video game developers causes a building to turn into a bridge so Guy and his special someone can cross. Unfortunately, the game breaks enough that only NPC's can play. On top of it, the leader also ordered one of the developers to send a minor antagonist to fight Guy. The fight concludes when he put the glasses on the antagonist, causing them to freak out but then be glad.
Guy then runs along with his buddy, who gets destroyed by the leader, killing the servers. Guy continues his mission and makes it to a location his love interest wanted to go to. It turns out that the area was proof that the leader stole the love interests and their friend's code to make the video game Guy is inside.
With the proof out, things change massively for Guy. The video game is more peaceful. All the NPC's that Guy encouraged to rebel against the players and become more sentient are now wandering around peacefully. Guy also tells his love interest that he was just a massive love letter from their video game developer friend through actions from the love interest.
Guy is now friends with the initial minor antagonist. His best friend was also brought back from an unknown source; Guy tells his best friend about the new state the video game is in, they ask what they are supposed to do now, and Guy says anything they want.
It ends with Guy and his best friend walking into the sunset (or something like that).
