Beside the name of Ser Gwayne Corbray, who had dueled the Targaryen bastard Daemon Blackfyre for an hour during the Battle of Redgrass Field though outmatched and grievously wounded, because... Ser Gwayne had sworn our oath.
~ Jaime Lannister describing Gwayne Corbray
For near an hour they danced--together on their horses--wheeling and circling and slashing--as men died all around them. It's said that whenever Blackfyre and Lady Forlorn clashed, you could hear the sound for a league around. It was half a song and half a scream they say. But when at last Lady Forlorn faltered, Blackfyre drove through Ser Gwayne's helm and left him blind and bleeding.
~ Eustace Osgrey on Gwayne Corbray's battle with Daemon I Blackfyre and his defeat by the latter on the Redgrass Field.

Ser Gwayne Corbray is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its TV adaption Game of Thrones. A renowned knight of House Corbray and the wielder of his family's ancestral greatsword Lady Forlorn, he served as a Kingsguard to King Daeron II Targaryen and is famously known for his duel with Daemon I Blackfyre during the First Blackfyre Rebellion.

Biography[]

Nothing is known of Gwayne's early life but he became at knight at some point and began wielding Lady Forlorn, his family's Valyrian steel greatsword. Ser Gwayne eventually joined the Kingsguard under King Daeron II Targaryen, the trueborn son and heir of King Aegon IV Targaryen, infamously known as Aegon the Unworthy.

First Blackfyre Rebellion[]

Battle of the Redgrass Field[]

When King Aegon's bastard son Daemon Blackfyre launched an insurgency against House Targaryen in a bid to press his claim for the Iron Throne, Gwayne Corbray fought against House Blackfyre and its allies during the First Blackfyre Rebellion. At the Battle of the Redgrass Field, Ser Gwayne came across Daemon and the two would engage in a duel while on horseback. It lasted for nearly an hour and their battle was considered a sight to behold, as they fought with their respective Valyrian steel swords, with Gwayne wielding Lady Forlorn while Daemon wielded Blackfyre, the treasured and ancestral longsword of House Targaryen and the sword of Aegon the Conqueror.

Daemon Blackfyre would ultimately prevail and he cut through Gwayne's helm, leaving the latter blinded in the eye. Driven by his honor, chivalry and compassion, Daemon dismounts to avoid trampling his opponent and he orders his supporter Redtusk to bring Ser Gwayne to his maester to have his wound treated. Unfortunately for the Black Dragon, his act proved to be his own undoing and his fate was sealed when his half-brother Brynden Rivers and his personal guard, the Raven's Teeth, to position themselves atop the Weeping Ridge and fired a volley arrows down on the battlefield, killing Daemon and his two eldest sons, the twins Aegon & Aemon.
