Gwen Elizabeth Cooper is the deuteragonist and lead heroine of the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood. She was a Cardiff police constable who was recruited by Torchwood Three. She eventually rose to second-in-command and, for a short while, commander of the unit. By 2009, Gwen was the only surviving member beyond the immortal Jack Harkness after Torchwood Three was declared an enemy to the British government and married to Rhys Williams. In 2011, she had severed her ties with Torchwood and begun a relatively peaceful life with her husband and newborn daughter, Anwen Williams. She remained prepared to fight for survival if the government came after her and resumed operations with Jack during the events of the Miracle.
She is portrayed by Eve Myles.
Overview[]
Gwen Cooper was originally a police officer but now works for Torchwood. She lives with her boyfriend, Rhys Williams, who is a transport manager. Gwen met Torchwood when she was investigating a murder organised by Suzie Costello. Gwen never gave up, she wanted to know what Torchwood was and what they were hiding. Jackeventually offered Gwen a job knowing the team needed someone with a more caring and sensitive side.
Personality[]
Gwen is empathetic, friendly, and at times Torchwood’s moral conscience. She is compelling in part because she is at times morally ambiguous. While Gwen has a tendency toward egotism, self-righteousness, and selfishness, she is also willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good.
