Gyatso is a minor character in the Netflix live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was based on the original animated series of the same name.
He is a monk and an airbending master of the Southern Air Temple who has been guided Aang and help him to find out who he is until he's ready to fulfill his duty as the Avatar, but not for long when the Council of Elders make their decision of sending him away to master all for elements because of the Fire Nation's reign of terror around the world. He was finally killed along with the other monks of the Southern Air Temple during the Fire Nation's genocide against the Air Nomads.
He is portrayed by Lim Kay Siu.
Biography[]
Finding out that Aang has skipped training from Monk Tsutop, Gyatso went out to look for Aang and called him down from the top of the tower. After Aang lands down with his airbending, Gyatso told him he has much more to learn despite being more advanced than the others and telling him to help others prepare for the Great Comet Festival. Later, he was called upon by the Council where they discussed of sending Aang away to learn to master all four elements because the Fire Nation are prepared to attack the Earth Kingdom but Gyatso tried to convince them not to because he still wants to learn more about who he is.
With no other choice, Gyatso tell Aang about the Avatar Cycle before revealing to him that he's the Avatar. When Aang claimed he doesn't want to leave his home behind, Gyatso comforted him by assured that they'll always be friends before hugging him. Later that night, the Fire Nation are arrived to attack the Southern Air Temple. While he evacuate the young monks to safety, Gyatso realized that Aang went missing and tried to called upon him, not realizing he's going away with Appa. The children are seen sheltering themselves while Gyatso prepared to face Fire Lord Sozin, which gotten himself burned to death as the rest of the monks. Since then, the entire Air Nomads are now being annihilated by the Fire Nation.
Hundreds of years later, Gyatso's skeleton corpse was later found by the Team Avatar when they arrived at the Southern Air Temple that was already destroyed by the Fire Nation before. Seeing this causing Aang to feels angry and sad at the same time which made him activated the Avatar State out of rage before he later calms down. Before Team Avatar leave to Kyoshi Island, Aang buried Gyatso's skeleton corpse under rocks and puts his necklace on there before praying for him.
After he escaped from Koh, Aang later found a stone hut where he discovers that Gyatso was at the Spirit World and later reunites with him. Gyatso then described to Aang about how dangerous Koh is and he has encountered with his previous lives, including Roku himself. Before Aang leaves, Gyatso reminds him if he wouldn't run away from the Southern Air Temple, he could've been killed along with the other Air Nomads.
