~ Gypsy making a riff on the movie Hercules and the Captive Women. |
Gypsy was one of the four robots who inhabited the Satellite of Love in the television series Mystery Science Theater 3000.
In the original run of MST3K Gypsy was first voiced and operated by Josh Weinstein, then Jim Mallon, and finally Patrick Brantseg. She was voiced by Rebecca Hanson in the revived series.
Built by Joel Robinson, Gypsy lived with Robinson, Cambot, Tom Servo, and Crow T. Robot on the Satellite of Love. She was responsible for many of the higher functions on the ship, as well as having a very jarring falsetto voice that would last until the middle of Season 8, where she was given a different raspier voice. The amount of computing power that took made Gypsy appear dimwitted and mentally disabled from season 1 and season 2. However when the demand on her systems was reduced, Gypsy was a quite intelligent individual, as she demonstrated during the showing of Wild Rebels when the demand on her systems was temporarily reduced. As time went on she became more intelligent, talked more, and became the motherly figure of the group.
Gypsy did not usually sit in on the experiments with Joel or Mike and the other 'bots. One exception was the movie Hercules and the Captive Women in which she persuaded Joel to let her watch the movie with him, Crow T. Robot, and Tom Servo. Gypsy did not last long in the theatre before claiming she forgot something and beat a hasty retreat out of the theatre. It is obvious that the real reason for this was that she couldn't stomach how bad the movie actually was. She also took the movie a little too seriously and literally, only making one real riff to it and, upon seeing the movie's characters involved in a wild brawl in the opening scene, called out to them to "Stop fighting!"
Loyal to Joel Robinson, she was greatly distressed when she thought that the Mads were going to kill Joel. Working with Mike Nelson Gypsy was able to secure Joel on to an escape pod hidden in a case of hamdingers, which she then launched back down to Earth.
Meanwhile the Mads sent up Mike Nelson as a replacement for Robinson. Gypsy helped Mike acclimate to his new life on the SOL. She however sometimes would not help him if he got in over his head due to his pride and his klutzy nature.
For unknown reasons, Gypsy has an obsession with the actor Richard Basehart, which was referenced on the show from time to time.
After several experiments, the SOL crash landed back on Earth. Gypsy would go on to become a corporate mogul, running ConGypsCo. Mike and the Bots regretted not participating in her initial public offering.
Gypsy would later reappear in board the rebuilt SOL to take part in the revived experiment by Kinga Forrester and Max. After Jonah Heston arrived on the MST3K he changed out her voice module, resulting in her having a more natural midwestern and female voice, and also refitted her so that she was connected to the ship via the ceiling.

~ Gypsy rebuking the guys for playing tee-ball in "Time of the Apes |
Back in Season 1 and 2, Gypsy is portrayed as very dimwitted, speaks very little, appears mentally disabled, and has pica. Since "Wild Rebels", when the demand on her systems was temporarily reduced, she is shown to be might brighter, talkative and more lucid. Since then. Gypsy comes across as the motherly figure for the SOL Crew, to which she sometimes treats Joel and Mike as rowdy brothers that need lecturing. Such as when she rams Joel in the opening segment of "The Beatniks", and when she scolds the guys for accidentally cause ship-wide decompression in "Time of the Apes", and in the segment that parodies the short Appreciating Our Parents in "The Unearthly", Gypsy's role in the Satellite are explicitly portrayed. And in "The Dead Talk Back" she tries to executor a fire drill. As she gets more character development, she also seems to develop a temper, which becomes noticeable in "The Wild World of Batwoman" and "Bloodlust!" The pressure of being the only "female" robot doesn't seem to weigh her down, and she does her best to demonstrate that she is a strong and independent artificial person. Whether performing "Gypsy Rose Me", she's not bashful about strutting her stuff and doesn't let anyone tell her not to.
