Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-Type, Integrated Electronics, better known by his acronym H.E.R.B.I.E., is a supporting character in the 2025 film The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He is a robot created by Mr. Fantastic who serves as an ally to the Fantastic Four.

He was voiced by Matthew Wood.

History[]

H.E.R.B.I.E. is Reed Richards' right-hand robot in the lab, assisting with experiments and scientific tasks. At the same time, he performs domestic duties like helping Ben Grimm cook and babyproofing the family's apartment for Reed and Sue's son, Franklin.

When the Fantastic Four must go into space to confront Galactus, H.E.R.B.I.E. accompanies them aboard their ship, the Excelsior. He helps the team track Galactus using the FTL engine and takes on ship-control duties while the heroes battle the Silver Surfer and attend to Sue's delivery of Franklin.

Once the team returns to Earth, H.E.R.B.I.E. is tasked with protecting the newborn Franklin. When Galactus arrives, H.E.R.B.I.E. heroically tries to distract the baby while the rest of the team deals with Galactus.

After Galactus is defeated and left stranded at the edge of the universe, H.E.R.B.I.E. continues to help raise Franklin over the next few years.

Personality[]

Director Matt Shakman described H.E.R.B.I.E. as a "charming and adorable" presence within the Baxter Building and beyond.

While a loyal and reliable assistant, H.E.R.B.I.E. can sometimes be a "slightly put-upon robot". He is overworked and stressed, serving as a nanny, cook, cleaner, and scientific advisor for the family.

He's both funny and capable of evoking strong emotion. As Shakman noted, H.E.R.B.I.E. "will break [the viewer's] heart," signaling his vulnerability and central role in the film's emotional landscape.

Trivia[]

Walt Disney Imagineering created a fully functional animatronic version of H.E.R.B.I.E. that appeared in Tomorrowland at Disneyland for a limited time, following the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
