Hades is the titular main antagonist of the 2020 roguelike video game Hades and a major character in its 2025 sequel, Hades II.

He is the Chthonic God of the Underworld and the neglectful father of the protagonist, Zagreus. In a misguided effort to protect Zagreus, he constantly prevents him from escaping to the surface world. After Zagreus defeats him and finds his long lost mother (and Hades' wife) Persephone, the family comes back together, although the wounds are still there.

In Hades II, Hades and Persephone managed to conceive a second child, a daughter named Melinoë, but then they were then attacked by Hades' dethroned father, Chronos. Hades manages to save Melinoë by giving her to Hecate to protect while he gets imprisoned in Tartarus until he is freed by his daughter when she grows up.

He was voiced by Logan Cunningham.

History[]

Past[]

Hades was the first born son of the Titan of Time, Chronos and Rhea. He was the older brother of Poseidon, God of the Sea and Zeus, God of the Sky and future King of the Gods. After suffering centuries of abuse and watching their father's tyranny, them and their foster sisters (Hestia, Demeter and Hera) would overthrow Chronos and cut him into pieces and spread them through Tartarus. After that, the brothers would draw lots to determine who gets to rule what. Hades got the Underworld, which he didn't mind.

Hades eventually fell in love with Persephone the Goddess of Venture and the daughter of Demeter. Zeus saw this and kidnapped Persephone and presented her to his older brother as a gift. Hades was enraged over his brother's narcissism and misogyny and severed ties with Zeus and Zeus' children. Despite that, Hades and Persephone eventually did fall in love and they had a son named Zagreus. Unfortunately, he was stillborn and Persephone fled the Underworld in sadness. Night Incarnate, Nyx convinced her daughters the Fates to let Zagreus live and they did but it was too late. Hades became neglectful of his son and gave him to Nyx to raise.

Hades[]

Zagreus would soon grow up and resent his father. When he learns about his birth mother, Zagreus challenges Hades to let him escape the Underworld. Zagreus and Hades would fight many times near the exit of the Underworld until Zagreus would finally be victorious. Zagreus would later return to with his mother in the Underworld and decides to give Hades another chance.

Hades II[]

Hades and Persephone have a second child, Melinoë who is then taken to the crossroads by Hecate to protect her from Chronos. Hades is later captured by Chronos and put to Tartarus. After Melinoë grows up and fights Chronos many times, Zagreus convinces Chronos to surrender and he frees Hades and the others. Hades chooses to forgive his father and gives him rulership of the Isles of the Blessed.

Personality[]

While at first, Hades appears as an abusive father and a tyrannical ruler, his more honorable traits are slowly revealed. He does love his wife and children even though it isn't always obvious behind the tough exterior and is actually a responsible king, unlike his more hedonistic relatives on Olympus. He is also able to forgive as he forgave his abusive father Chronos and gave him a chance at redemption and breaking the circle, similarly to what his son Zagreus did with him.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Immortality: Despite dying many times, Hades always comes back as a deity should.
  • Umbrakinesis: As god of the Underworld, Hades has absolute control over shadows and darkness.
  • Teleportation: As seen with his battle with Zagreus, Hades can move from one place to another.
  • Swordsmanship: Hades has expertise over his spear Gigaros. According to Poseidon, it was him who taught him how to use his trident.

Trivia[]

  • In mythology, Hades and Persephone have a third child, Macaria, who could possibly appear in a hypothetical third game.
