Halibel, also known as Admirer Halibel, is a supporting character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World.

Halibel was a wolf-person shinobi from the Kararagi Federation who specialized in powerful curses. Considered the greatest warrior in the Federation, Halibel was known as the "Admirer" due to being open-handed with the praise he gave to the people and things he encountered. Unlike the strongest warriors from other nations, Halibel answered to no one and only leant his might to causes he desired to.

Appearance[]

Halibel was a member of the wolf-person race, a rare type of demi-human characterized by their physiological similarity to wolves. Halibel had narrow golden eyes, black nails, a slim build albeit with a rotund belly, and was bipedal like a human. He stood at six feet and three inches tall. His fur was comprised of a black overcoat and a grey undercoat. Only his legs, back, and the outer side of his arms and hands were coated with black fur. Though his hands were shaped like a human's, his feet were shaped like wolf paws.

Synopsis[]

History[]

Halibel belonged to the wolf-people, a race of demi-humans that were endangered as a result of the prejudice they faced throughout the world. The hatred towards his race stemmed from three centuries in the past when Eugard Volakia, the Emperor of the foreign Holy Empire of Volakia, suffered a great personal tragedy as a result of being betrayed by wolf-people. Ever since, the wolf-people were viewed with great mistrust. Halibel was born in what was likely the only wolf-person settlement in the world, a reclusive village situated in a valley beneath a sheer precipice in the north-west region of the Kararagi Federation.

Kararagi was a proto-capitalist collection of city-states that served as the mercantile center of the world and, like its neighbouring Volakia, was considered one of the four great nations. The people of Kararagi were highly individualistic, which led to it having a large number of businesses and enterprises. The wolf-person village that Halibel was born in had a population of less than a hundred, and its existence was kept completely secret from the outside world. Certain people who decided to leave the village were allowed to do so by posing as different types of demi-humans, such as dog-humans, as they had similar physical features.

Growing up, Halibel was best friends with a boy his own age named Ricardo Welkin. The friends had contrasting personalities, with Halibel being relaxed and easy-going and Welkin being boisterous and adventurous. Despite his laidback manner, Halibel was an immensely talented warrior who became skilled in martial arts, curse usage, and shinobi skills. Feeling stifled by the small world in which he lived, Welkin eventually decided to leave the village at age fifteen. Welkin made an oath with Halibel and the village chief that, if he compromised the secrecy of the village in any way, Halibel would hunt him down and kill him.

Soon enough, Halibel also left the village. Unlike Welkin however, Halibel was not required to make an oath of secrecy or conceal his identity as a wolf-person because he was considered so powerful that no one would be able to defeat him or make him reveal the location of the village. He began working as a wandering ronin, only lending his strength to causes that he deemed fit. Halibel earned recognition as Kararagi's strongest warrior and became known as the "Admirer," an epithet given to him as a result of his well known propensity to offer generous praise to the people and things he encountered.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Energy Absorption: All living beings were born with a gate, a metaphysical apparatus within a person's body that autonomously absorbed the ambient magical energy that existed in the atmosphere and stored it in the individual's od (soul). Those who received training were capable of using their stored mana for a variety of purposes.
    • Magic: A prominent use for mana was magic, a practice that consisted of expelling mana out of one's own gate and manipulating it to create specific supernatural phenomena. The Admirer had expert knowledge on and specialized in the use of curses, a subcategory of magic characterized by their more sinister nature. As opposed to regular magic, many curses directly targeted the od of their intended victim and as such, once activated, continued to function even in the event that the curse user perished.
      • Death Inducement
      • Illusion Creation: Using magical energy and clumps of his own fur, Halibel could create illusory duplicates of himself that were highly difficult to discern from the genuine article. Halibel's duplicates could interact with their surroundings and, by extension, do damage to opponents. Though the Admirer's illusory clones were able to defeat average opponents, their strength still paled in comparison to the actual Halibel. The duplicates were also far less durable and would simply return to their original form (a clump of fur) upon sustaining too much damage.
