Hanta Sero, is a recurring character in student in My Hero Academia. He is one of the students in Class 1-A, training to become a Pro Hero.

He is voiced by Kiyotaka Furushima in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Christopher Bevins in the English version of the anime.

Appearance

Hanta is a young man of rather tall height, he has black hair that is spiked downwards along with black eyes. His face is regarded as rather plain with his eyes often opened quite wide as well as often sporting a grin, with his teeth being prominently straight and narrow. His elbows are cylinder-shape dispensers, which allows him to use his Quirk and shoot tape from them.

His hero costume consists of a black and white bodysuit with two large yellow shoulder-pads as well as white boots that are lined with yellow. In addition, he adorns a helmet in similar style to his costume with a black visor covering his face.

Personality

Hanta is a very friendly person and has proven to be one of the more sociable members of Class 1-A. He can be loud and showy at times, often trying to impress his peers with his Quirk.

He is often the only person to call his classmates out when they are acting crazy. He is quite humorous and often takes part in making jokes with his classmates. However, when push comes to shove, Hanta is a brave hero-in-training who wishes to prosper on his own while helping others do the same. He easily makes friends with those around him and is shown to be a very laid-back guy.

Hanta is able to keep up his confidence and make an effort, even when he believes that the odds are stacked heavily against him. This is shown when he faced Shoto Todoroki during the Sports Festival and admitted that he felt like he couldn't win, but soon attacked Shoto saying that he didn't want to lose either. Despite his crushing defeat afterwards, as well as failing the Final Exam due to being put asleep by Midnight, he still retains his willingness to continue and improve alongside his classmates.

Though not openly flirtatious like Denki or Minoru, Hanta still does possess some interest in girls. This was primarily seen during the Provisional License Exam when Izuku informs him of the girl who transformed into a clone of Ochaco, he starts violently shaking Izuku and asking him if she was naked then as well. Later on, he informed Denki and Minoru of what happened with Izuku and "Camie", proving that he also has a habit to spread gossip.

Powers & Abilities

Overall Abilities: Hanta has proven himself to be a very competent combatant, with a great handle on his versatile Quirk, Tape. He primarily uses his tape to bind targets from afar, restraining them from action by knotting his tape around their bodies. He prefers to remain at a safe distance while firing large amounts of tape at his opponents with impressive accuracy.

Hanta has also shown the ability to shoot multiple strands of tape at once, as well as produce double-sided tape (which sticks to both sides). Hanta frequently uses Tape for mobility, attaching the adhesive material to surfaces and then either using them to swing himself through the air or pull himself towards the attachment points.

Furthermore, by spreading tape around a room or pathway, Hanta can easily create traps and blockades for enemies. Hanta's overall fighting style makes him a highly formidable long-range combatant. Hanta may also take pieces of his tape for more conventional uses, like sticking one object to another, especially when it comes to reinforcing barricades and walls. Allies are also able to use stray pieces of tape for their own advantage, even if Hanta finds himself unable to act. Hanta also has great camaraderie, not only using his Tape to help distance his comrades from powerful opponents, but also using his Quirk in tandem with the Quirks of other people, such as Ochaco Uraraka's Zero Gravity. This specific combination allows strings of tape to be attached to floating objects in order to create a unique trap.

During the U.S.J. Incident, thanks to Ochaco running interference against Kurogiri, Hanta and Rikido Sato were able to successfully subdue the villain even further. When pitted against Shoto Todoroki, one of the strongest students in Class 1-A, at the U.A. Sports Festival, Hanta was able to swiftly bind him with tape before the latter could react, and nearly defeat him until Shoto unleashed a massive wall of ice that immobilized and defeated Hanta. His abilities eventually garnered the attention of The Lurkers (consisting of Edgeshot, Kamui Woods, and Mt. Lady), giving Hanta the opportunity to intern under the trio of powerful heroes and improve on close and efficient team maneuvers.

  • Enhanced Strength: Hanta has above average physical strength, as he is able to use his tape to swing himself up and around very high objects and sling other people around with no noticeable difficulty or strain.

Trivia

  • Hanta's favourite foods are oranges, soy products as well as foods that he finds healthy.
  • While considered a background character, Horikoshi likes Hanta enough to give him more prominent roles whenever possible.
  • Horikoshi came up with Hanta's Tape Quirk during a trip to a convenience store, he also notes that Hanta's Quirk is a personal favourite of his.
  • Hanta's moves and abilities of using his tape to swing across buildings and restrain enemies resemble that of Spider-Man.
    • Horikoshi nods towards this connection in one of the Ultra Analysis books, saying that Hanta has a deep admiration for someone fitting Spider-Man's description.
