Harold Allnut is a character in DC Comics and ally of Batman who is responsible for designing and engineering many gadgets in Batman's arsenal. Harold is also mute and communicates using sign language. In the Prime Earth continuity, he is a skilled surgeon.
Biography[]
Harold was born with kyphosis which gave him the appearance of a hunchback and was unable to talk. His family, particularly his mother, would constantly abuse him over his looks which he tolerated for a time by finding refuge in his interests with mechanics, something which he showed more skill at than any engineering expert. Eventually, Harold got fed up with the ridicule and ran away from home, leaving him to wander the streets of Gotham City alone until he was one day rescued by the Penguin from a group of street thugs. Penguin nursed Harold back to health and had him work for months on a device capable of controlling birds. But when Harold learnt that Penguin intended to use it to terrorize Gotham, he turned against him before Batman managed to capture the villain and foiled his plans.
Sometime after Penguin's defeat, Harold took shelter inside a warehouse where he fixed children's toys in exchange for food. Unfortunately, when a young girl took her toy to Harold, her father came under the false assumption that Allnut was a "disgusting pervert" and an angry mob soon formed to assault him. Luckily, Batman appeared before the mob to defuse the misunderstanding and offered Harold a chance to work for him by constructing gadgets inside the Batcave; to which Harold agreed to. During his time working in the cave, Harold assisted Nightwing and Robin in monitoring Azrael during his tenure as Batman, as well as contributed to Gotham's rebuilding efforts during the events of No Mans Land. He also temporarily left Gotham to help Azrael at his castle hideout in Ossaville.
Eventually, Harold was approached by Hush who manipulated him into reprogramming the Bat-Computer in exchange for a procedure that would correct his posture and enable him to talk. When Harold was confronted Batman for his treachery, Hush killed him by a shot to the head.
Later, Batman forgave Harold for his betrayal as he acknowledged his desire to be perceived as "normal" and buried him on a hill nearby Wayne Manor.
Harold was revived for the New 52, and in this continuity he is a highly skilled surgeon and ally of Batman who was trusted to perform a risky procedure on Two-Face.
