Harold Mews is one of the major characters on Cryptids Island on Poptropica.

Characteristics[]

History[]

From the now-inaccessible Mews Foundation website:

Harold Mews comes from a humble household, and an honest, hard-working family. At a young age, he inherited the Mews Corporation from his parents, and turned the struggling regional paper supply company into a multinational corporation with business divisions in telecommunications, aerospace, textiles, and traveling circuses. Mews has appeared on Poptropica Business Weekly’s list of wealthiest Poptropicans every year since its inception, and was thrice named the magazine’s “Businessperson of the Year.”

Mews was born with a passion for adventure. An avid outdoorsman, he’s spent most of his non-working hours testing his mettle against nature. Mews once swam from Bouffant Bay to Golden Harbor in under 20 hours, without the aid of a snorkel. He challenged Hermes to a ski race down Mt. Olympus, and won. He is the only person ever to ride the Great Booga Shark across Booga Bay, and live to tell the tale. But one quest in particular proved to be a turning point in Mews’ life.

In 1953, Mews was about to become the first person to climb Mt. Everest, along with Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay, when he spotted what appeared to be yeti tracks leading away from the group’s base camp. Mews abandoned the climbing party, and everlasting glory, to follow the footprints. Some say he found nothing but an unidentified tuft of fur in a rhododendron, but Mews was fond of saying that he found something more valuable on the side of Mt. Everest: his life’s passion, the search for cryptids.

Years later, Mews turned over day-to-day operations of the Mews Corporation to his trusted associate, Tough Horse, and established the Mews Foundation. Its mission: To expand the boundaries of scientific discovery. Through the Foundation, Mews hopes to achieve his lifelong goal of proving the existence of cryptids.

Appearance[]

Harold Mews is an elderly man with light skin and short gray hair, along with a small mustache. He typically dresses in a tan and brown suit vest, complemented by tan pants. He adds a touch of sophistication with a tan fedora and a striking red tie.

Personality[]

Harold Mews embodies an eccentric and adventurous spirit, fueled by a profound fascination for exploring the mysteries of cryptids and other unusual creatures. Despite his success as a business mogul, he remains approachable and down-to-earth, readily engaging in discussions about his favorite subject. However, he can sometimes get carried away with tangents, as seen in the Cryptids Island book. Mews is deeply compassionate, evidenced by his dedication to proving the existence of cryptids and his desire to create a sanctuary for Bigfoot. He holds a strong disdain for individuals like Gretchen Grimlock, who seek to exploit cryptids rather than appreciate them for their wonder and mystery.

Storyline[]

Harold Mews offers a reward for anyone who can provide irrefutable proof of cryptids' existence. He comes to your aid after Gretchen Grimlock sabotages your kite while kitesurfing, leaving you stranded at sea. Mews generously lends you his helicopter to search for evidence of cryptids and assists in verifying the authenticity of your findings. After confirming the existence of various cryptids like the Chupacabra, Jersey Devil, and Nessie, he alerts you to a Bigfoot sighting in the Pacific Northwest. Together, you track down Bigfoot to a cave, only to encounter Gretchen Grimlock attempting to capture the creature. Mews reveals his desire to create a sanctuary for Bigfoot but lacks the necessary funds. Inspired by your selflessness in helping Bigfoot, you decline the promised reward, prompting Mews to commend your actions and award you the Island Medallion.

Trivia[]

  • There used to be a Mews Foundation website, but the link now redirects to Poptropica. An archived version of the site can be found at archive.org.
  • In the fandom, he is commonly shipped with Max McGullicutty from Survival Island.
  • He shares similarities to Myron Van Buren from Survival Island.
    • Both are extremely rich
    • Both have butlers
    • Both have their own mansions
    • Both own helicopters, and use them to rescue you during the course of the island (for good and bad).
    • Both are obsessed with animals and strange creatures, albeit for different reasons.
