Harvey Dent is the main antagonist of the 2024 DC Black musical thriller movie Joker: Folie à Deux, the second feature to have the DC Black label.

He is portrayed by Harry Lawtey.

Biography[]

Harvey Dent studied Joker's past and became obsessed with having him executed after a trial, wanting to put Arthur's myth to an end, by convincing the court that he is no martyr or genius, letting the forces of the law prove Joker was a monster before facilitating his death penalty. Harvey was insensitive to the struggles that his desired witnesses might be faced with, as he was so focused on exposing and ending Joker.

Dent speaks on the news claiming that Joker is no martyr and remarking that Arthur knew what he was doing and declaring the prosecution's goal to sentence Arthur Fleck to death.

During the trials, the prosecutor worked to paint Joker and Arthur as one and the same, and he did not have a split personality, but was just an evil man; much to the disagreement of others such as Lee Quinn who claims Joker is perfect, or Arthur's lawyer, Maryanne Stewart, who tries to protect Arthur's life, since she believed that Joker was an actual dissociative identity born due to Arthur's endless childhood suffering and his miserable adult life.

Harvey calls the witnesses in to prove his point. The first witness was one of Arthur's psychiatrists, who gave a little bit of information about the Joker's background and mentioned he has killed 3 innocent people inside the subway station; the psychiatrist noted that Arthur had mental illness, but only narcissistic personality disorder and sociopathy, but not the insanity or alternate personalities the defense pushed forward. Maryanne Stewart cross examined the psychiatrist, getting him to admit that he had only spent 80 minutes with Arthur; she proposed that such a limited time was ineffective to truly determine if Arthur was sane or insane, which appeared to help the defense.

The next witness called in by Harvey Dent was Sophie, who claimed she only met the Joker in the lift and they didn't know each other very well. Harvey asked why Sophie had come today, as she had previously ignored numerous summons; Sophie answered that because of the TV movie made about Arthur, some of his more deranged followers began stalking her and even threatening her. Sophie was afraid for her and her daughter's lives, thus had moved out of town, but came back due to wanting to end the harassment and danger of Joker's followers. Arthur's lawyer asked Sophie if the neighbour she knew and Joker felt like different people, but Sophie admitted to not know him well enough to even know; Sophie revealed that she mostly talked with his mother, Penny Fleck, who was sometimes pleasant, yet frequently shared disparaging and mocking stories about Arthur. Maryanne Stewart explained that he had a split personality and a rough background story because his adoptive mother Penny Fleck lied to him all the time about his childhood and therefore causing the poor boy to live life within a fantasy, causing him to life a life of such solitude that he resorted to imagining loving relationships with women who loved him, just so he wouldn't feel so alone.

Arthur, bored of the courtroom drama, eventually fires his lawyer and decided to act as his own attorney, which deeply confused Harvey Dent. Despite the unorthodox legal strategy, Harvey continued his case with the last witness of Gary Puddles, once Arthur's co-worker and friend prior to the murder of Randall. Gary detailed how he was terrified when the murder happened and had been terrified ever since; he talked about how the police had to hold him in protective custody, yet they were unsympathetic due to bigotry about his small stature. The Joker asked Gary if he was really his friend, to which Gary at first replied that they were friends and that Arthur has gone too far. But next, Gary tells Arthur he's scared since the murder of their co-worker Randall, as well as expressing sadness over losing his friend, Arthur, as his pre-Joker self was the only person who was kind and never mocked him, yet that Gary was reminded that was gone as Joker had just previously mocked Gary for his unusual surname. When Arthur brings up Randall's moral failings and bullying, Gary agreed, however, argued that Randall didn't deserve to die for them.

Harvey rests his case due to realizing that he has already won it, claiming that there are no further witnesses; Joker also rested his case, which was to the shock of the judge and prosecution, yet the judge allowed proceedings to halt until tomorrow. Joker impulsively mocked the Arkham guards to the video camera.

Due to suffering torture and sexual assault from the angered guards in Arkham, as well as the death of his fellow inmate for cheering for him, Arthur returned to court without his Joker make-up; Arthur sorrowfully confessed that he knowingly committed the murders, while also revealing how he had murdered his mother, Penny Fleck. Arthur also admitted that Joker wasn't real, but just a mask he created in an attempt to deal with the pressure and suffering he faced. Even with a tragic breakdown, nevertheless, after the jury returned from deliberation, they charged Arthur Fleck as guilty on all charges.

The judge began to deliver sentencing but interrupted by an explosion that came from a car bomb outside the courtroom, detonated by pro-Joker extremists. While the culprit helped the Joker escape his fate, not willing to lose faith of his idol, Harvey was disfigured by the flames and debris unleashed by the explosion, leaving him whimpering as his left side was now disfigured.

Personality[]

Harvey is a trusted lawman, but on the other hand, he was heavily obsessed with the Joker, doing everything he could to undermine any misguided inspiration sparked by the clown prince's public image. He was against the movement which believed the Joker is a martyr; because of the violence of Joker's crimes and his followers, Harvey was unwilling to even consider that Arthur was just a severely mentally ill man. Despite looking like Harvey was a well-meaning lawman, his intentions and his ways of dealing with Joker in twisted, obsessed ways makes him unable to accept that Arthur could also be a victim of a broken system; Harvey's strong obsession with law and order perhaps provoked his obsession with destroying the supposed power of Joker, especially due to the crime wave unleashed by Joker's example.

Harvey also cares for the public to some extent, as he does desire to force an infamous criminal to face consequences that Harvey believed Joker deserved. He is also shown to be vengeful and self-righteous, since he proclaims a need to protect the public from Joker's influence, yet he is more focused on ensuring Arthur received the death penalty, rather than seek to reform a city that could create such a criminal. His demeanor in the courtroom is professional and controlled, yet with an air of smugness that indicates he views himself superior to the defendant and defending council alike.

Despite Harvey's harsh press conferences and disdain for Arthur, during the trial he remained polite, and was more subtle with his interrogation tactics, rather than jumping to accusations too early. When Arthur took over as his own attorney, Harvey was more baffled than offended, with the strangeness of the decision ensuring that he didn't become angry about his beloved courtroom process being made a mockery.

Trivia[]

  • Ironically Arthur's lawyer Maryanne Stewart attempted to push the notion that Arthur suffered from dissociative identity disorder, which in Batman media is the illness most commonly associated with Harvey himself, as his criminal transformation is manifested in the second identity Two-Face.
  • While Harvey typically received his half-bogy mutilation from Sal Maroni, he suffered it here from a car bomb made by two unknown followers of Joker, one dressed identically to him and the other merely wearing a plastic clown mask.
    • Unlike most occurrences of Harvey being maimed, he didn't suffer it due to be an intentional target, rather he was only collateral damage during the Clowns attempting to help Arthur flee.
