~ Kyojuro Rengoku talking about a Hashira's job and his belief that Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu will become future Hashiras before he died |
The Hashira, also known as the Pillars, are the major protagonists of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba franchise.
They are a team of nine Demon Slayers that are the most powerful and elite-ranking combatants of the Demon Slayer Corps, and personally answering to the corps' leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki. They are strong enough to obliterate Lower Rank Demons of the Twelve Kizuki with relative ease, though they struggle against the much stronger Upper Rank Demons.
Current Hashira[]
Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira[]
Giyu is the first Hashira that Tanjiro and Nezuko encounter in the series. Upon realizing that Nezuko is unlike other demons, Giyu brings them to former Water Hashira Sakonji Urokodaki, so that he can train Tanjiro to better protect his sister in their journey of searching for a cure.
Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira[]
Following Tanjiro’s trial during the Rehabilitation Training Arc, Shinobu suggests having the main heroes brought to the Butterfly Mansion where they will properly be able to recuperate. She is able to bond with Tanjiro after revealing that she inherited the Insect Hashira title from her older sister who was killed by demons. Shinobu is noted to be the weakest among the Hashira, due to her subpar strength, but thanks to her genius intellect and poison skills, she manages to ascend to the rank of a Hashira.
Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira[]
The deuteragonist during the Mugen Train Arc, Tanjiro initially sought Kyojuro out in the hopes of learning more about Sun Breathing. The main heroes are eventually advised to visit the Rengoku House to seek answers, as the Rengoku family is known to have kept records about the former Flame Hashira.
Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira[]
The deuteragonist during the Entertainment District Arc, Tengen enlists help from Tanjiro and his friends to search for his wives who went missing in the red light district. This mission leads to a harrowing encounter with members from the Upper Rank of the Twelve Demon Moons.
Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira[]
Obanai makes an appearance at the end of the Entertainment District Arc. Before this, he was present during Tanjiro’s trial and has since shown an interest in the Kamado siblings due to their unique circumstances.
Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira[]
Possibly the most eye-catching of the Demon Slayer Hashira, Mitsuri appears during Tanjiro’s trial and suggests that the Hashira wait for Oyakata-sama before making a decision about the Kamado siblings. She was even the first Hashira (besides Giyu) to support the Kamado siblings. She later became a deuteragonist in the Swordsmith Village Arc.
Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira[]
Muichiro makes an appearance during Tanjiro’s trial and briefly in the Entertainment District Arc, when Tengen is shown reflecting on Muichiro’s exceptional skills as a swordsman. Similar to Mitsuri, Muichiro is a deuteragonist in the Swordsmith Village Arc.
Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira[]
Sanemi appears during Tanjiro’s trial in the Rehabilitation Training Arc, and antagonized the Kamado siblings the most before Oyakata-sama’s arrival, adamant that Nezuko was like other demons and refusing to accept them as a result.
Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira[]
Gyomei appears during Tanjiro’s trial in the Rehabilitation Training Arc and briefly in the Entertainment District Arc, when Tengen is shown reflecting on both his and Muichiro’s exceptional skills as swordsmen. Out of all the Hashira, Gyomei is noted to be the strongest Hashira in the entire Demon Slayer Corps and is also a close confidant to Kagaya, being far more aware of the master's plans than any of the other Hashira.
Powers & Abilities[]
The Hashira are among the strongest Demon Slayers in the entire corps. They possess an immense amount of strength, skill, and potential that allows them to fight against the demon kind with ease. Besides their unique proficiency of swordsmanship, The Hashira possess a Breathing Style of their own. There are 14 types of breathing styles in the series-
- Sun Breathing (also known as Hinokami Kagura)
- Water Breathing
- Moon Breathing
- Flame Breathing
- Thunder Breathing
- Stone Breathing
- Wind Breathing
- Flower Breathing
- Serpent Breathing
- Love Breathing
- Sound Breathing
- Beast Breathing
- Mist Breathing
- Insect Breathing
Training/Skills[]
Hashira Training (柱|はしら) is a training session that is led by the Hashira and also by a lower ranked demon. The training also has many different ways for Hashiras to train such as flexibility training, sword skills training, and exercising to improve that physical abilities and mental health, and most of all, to make themselves easier to gain victory when battling demons to protect humanity. As a result, even if they are the highest ranks, other Demon Slayer can help Hashiras when training, like a win-win for all ranks. And throughout during the Infinity Castle of the manga, because of their hard work in training, they were easily able to kill demons no matter what rank they were in during the Infinity Castle.
Trivia[]
- Out of the nine members of the Hashiras, there are only two female members (Shinobu Kocho and Mitsuri Kanroji) while all the rest of the members are men.
