Haymitch Abernathy is one of the main characters in The Hunger Games trilogy and the main protagonist of the prequel Sunrise on the Reaping. He is the victor from District 12 for the 50th Hunger Games. Haymitch was the only District 12 Hunger Games victor alive before Katniss and Peeta Mellark won the 74th Hunger Games, and works as a mentor to subsequent District 12 tributes.

He is portrayed by Woody Harrelson, who also portrayed Pepper Lewis in the 1994 film The Cowboy Way, Roy Munson in Kingpin, Tallahassee in the Zombieland film series, Merritt McKinney in the Now You See Me series, and Jake in Free Birds.

Biography[]

Haymitch Abernathy was born on July 4th, the day of the Reaping for the 34th Hunger Games to Willamae Abernathy in District 12. Haymitch was selected in the Harvest of the second Quell of the 25, the 50th year of the Hunger Games along with another male Tribute and two female Tributes. During his interview with Caesar Flickerman, he was asked what he thought about the Games having twice as many tributes; He said that he didn't see much difference, since they would be just as stupid, making the audience laugh.

During the Games, he obtained a Cornucopia knife. At an uncertain point Haymitch confronted three professional tributes, killing two with the knife; However, the third caught him and was about to cut his throat when he was shot in the back with a poisoned dart. He formed a temporary alliance with Maysilee Donner, the tribute from District 12. The two went to the end of the arena, thinking there might be something they could use there.

Towards the end of the Games, when only a few Tributes were left alive, they reached the end of the arena and found nothing. She suggested going back, but Haymitch refused to leave. Maysilee broke the alliance, not wanting to have to end up killing him herself. It was then that Haymitch picked up a small stone from the edge of the cliff he was on and threw it over the edge, and saw that around the sand there was a force field that returned it to him, much to his delight. He heard Maysilee scream, running to her aid, but found her dying from a deadly bird attack. He stayed by her side while she died.

In the end, only Haymitch and the Tribute from District 1 remained; both were badly injured. Haymitch, at one point in the fight, gouged out his eye, slid down the cliff while practically holding his intestines, and reached the edge with the District 1 Tribute right behind him. Haymitch fell to his knees due to his injuries; His opponent took advantage of the moment to throw her ax at him, but Haymitch dodged it at the last moment. Using the force field of the sand at the end of the cliff, he repelled the ax thrown by the District 1 Tribute, which embedded itself in his own head and killed her.

After winning the Games, the Capitol saw his performance with the force field as an act of rebellion, so it ordered the murder of his family and his girlfriend. For the next 24 years, Haymitch dedicated himself to training the Tributes of his District alone, falling into alcoholism as he watched them all die.

Katniss and Haymitch have quite a bit in common. Both are lethal and suspicious, willing to survive but at the same time capable of sacrificing themselves if necessary. Although they both treat each other roughly, Haymitch is Katniss' main support, as they both have in common a strong protective instinct and sense of loyalty towards Peeta.
