~ Hazel to Hecate. |
Hazel Levesque (b. December 17, 1928) is one of the main protagonists of Rick Riordan's The Heroes of Olympus series and a supporting character in The Trials of Apollo series.
She is the demigod daughter of Pluto (Hades' Roman form) and one of the seven heroes of the next great prophecy. She was born in 1928, and then died in 1942 when sacrificing herself to stop Gaea and Alcyoneus' return. She was later resurrected by her half-brother Nico di Angelo in the twenty-first century. She now lives at Camp Jupiter as one of the Praetors of the Twelfth Legion, and is dating her fellow praetor Frank Zhang.
Biography[]
Background[]
Hazel was born to Marie Levesque and the god Pluto in 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her mother often yelled at her, and her father only visited once. She went to a school for colored people where she met Sammy Valdez, her only friend at the time.
Before her birth, Pluto had granted Marie her one wish, all the riches of the earth, despite his warning that the greediest wishes cause the greatest sorrows. Her wish gave Hazel the power to summon jewels, but they were cursed and would cause whoever bought them to suffer. Because of this, Marie and Hazel had to move to avoid the town's wrath. They moved to Seward, Alaska, beyond the power of the gods. At one point, Pluto tells Hazel that her curse will be "washed away" by a descendant of Poseidon.
There, Hazel was forced by Gaea to raise her oldest Gigantes son, Alcyoneus, by calling forth precious metals that were beneath the earth on a phantom island. Once Hazel had almost finished the job, she discovered that Gaea also needed a human sacrifice in order for her son to rise up and Hazel's mother offered to be the sacrifice to save Hazel.
Once Hazel discovered this, she called up all the riches below her, causing an eruption that broke the cavern walls and ultimately destroyed the island while her mother said that she was proud of her. Hazel and her mother both died in 1942, but delayed the rise of the Gigantes for some time.
In the Underworld, Hazel was to be put in Elysium, and her mother in the Fields of Punishment, but Hazel sacrificed Elysium so they could both be put in the Fields of Asphodel instead. It was there, that her Greek half-brother, Nico di Angelo found her and brought her back to the living, 60 years after her death. He sent her to Camp Jupiter to learn how to fight and use her powers. He visited from time to time.
The Heroes of Olympus[]
The Son of Neptune[]
Hazel is on guard with Frank Zhang when the amnesiac Percy Jackson first arrives at Camp Jupiter. Hazel befriends Percy, but suffers from blackmail by Octavian who threatens to expose the secret of her resurrection if she doesn't support him for Praetor. Hazel also experiences blackouts where she is sent into flashbacks of her life before she died and was resurrected. Hazel also displays a brief attraction to Percy, hoping that as the son of Poseidon, he could fulfill Pluto's prophecy that a descendant of Poseidon will wash away her curse. However, it doesn't work. It's later revealed that Hazel's sacrifice to stop the rise of Alcyoneus only delayed his return to around the 1980s and the Giant has captured Thanatos, the God of Death and is holding him in Alaska.
Hazel joins Frank and Percy on their quest to free Thanatos. During the trip, Hazel reveals her death and resurrection to her friends and inadvertently pulls Frank into one of her flashbacks. Hazel begins developing a romantic relationship with Frank and she befriends the immortal horse Arion after freeing him from the Amazons. In Alaska, Hazel, Frank and Arion defeat Alcyoneus by dragging him across the Canadian border where he is vulnerable, finally allowing Hazel to kill him. Returning to Camp Jupiter, she participates in the final battle with the Giant Polybotes and his army, but she is left concerned by the disappearance of her half-brother Nico di Angelo. When Camp Jupiter receives a message from Camp Half-Blood, Hazel is shocked by the appearance of Leo Valdez who is identical to her old boyfriend Sammy.
The Mark of Athena[]
When the rest of the Seven show up on the Argo II, Frank, Hazel and Jason Grace join them despite a possessed Leo sparking a war between the Greeks and the Romans. Hazel remains disquieted by Leo's resemblance to Sammy as she continues to pursue a romantic relationship with Frank. Hazel is able to purposefully cause one of her flashbacks and pull Leo into it in an effort to determine the truth. To their surprise, Hazel and Leo discover that Leo is actually Sammy's great-grandson. The two view a memory where Sammy, as an old man, implied to a baby Leo that he had been visited by Juno who had revealed to him Leo's role in Hazel's life in the future.
With Nico in the hands of two Giants in Rome, Hazel is determined to rescue him, attempting to use her powers to sense precious metals to find her brother through his sword. However, this proves to be a trap by Gaea. After the Seven succeed in rescuing a traumatized Nico, he and Hazel reveal what Nico has learned: the Doors of Death must be closed on both sides and the Underworld side is located in Tartarus where even the gods are too afraid to go. After Percy and Annabeth Chase fall into Tartarus, Nico and Hazel are able to sense that they aren't dead.
The House of Hades[]
As the Seven continue their quest, Hazel is visited by Hecate, the goddess of magic. Hecate reveals that she was the one that had led Marie Levesque to the spell that had allowed her to summon Pluto and was thus responsible for Hazel's birth. Hecate explains that Marie was actually a witch and thus Hazel has inherited an ability to perform magic similar to that of Hecate's own children. With the Bane of Magic Clyitus guarding the mortal world side of the Doors of Death, Hecate urges Hazel to train her powers so as to face the Giant. During the battle in the House of Hades, Hazel and Leo face off against the ancient witch Pasiphae who has resurrected Daedalus' Labyrinth. Hazel manages to take control of the Labyrinth and dump the witch into a bottomless pit before facing off against Clytius. Hazel frees the Doors of Death and joins forces with the rest of the Seven once Percy and Annabeth emerge to defeat Clytius who is finished off by Hecate. With the House of Hades collapsing around them, Hazel and Nico combine their powers to Shadow Travel everyone to safety.
The Blood of Olympus[]
Hazel continues to hone her newly-discovered powers over magic, controlling the Labyrinth to help them in the battle against Nike, the goddess of victory. Later, at Leo's request, Hazel uses the Mist to create a fake vial of the Physician's Cure to give to Piper, Leo having confided in Frank and Hazel his plan to sacrifice himself in order to defeat Gaea.
During the final battle with the Giants, Hazel, riding Arion, fights alongside Hecate and later Hades, the Greek form of her father. She later participates in the final battle with Gaea's monsters at Camp Half-Blood.
After Gaea's defeat, Hazel spends a few days at Camp Half-Blood along with the rest of the Romans, sleeping in the Hades Cabin with Nico who decides to stay at Camp Half-Blood. With Frank's promotion to Praetor, Hazel is promoted to Centurion of the Fifth Cohort, although she is consumed by guilt over Leo's death since she didn't stop him. Hazel thanks her half-brother for giving her a second life, but Nico tells her that Hazel making the most of her second life was the important part. Nico also enjoys teasing Hazel about her relationship with Frank.
The Trials of Apollo[]
The Tyrant's Tomb[]
When Apollo and Meg McCaffrey arrive at Camp Jupiter, Hazel, Frank and Reyna help them. Hazel has continued her romantic relationship with Frank, but she privately admits her worries that Frank has become too reckless in the recent months. Hazel also reveals that her curse finally seems to be broken, having been "washed away" by the love and self-confidence that Frank gives her, thus fulfilling Pluto's prophecy that it would be broken by a descendant of Poseidon. During the final battle, Hazel fights against the undead Tarquin, defeating him before Diana arrives with the Hunters of Artemis and finishes Tarquin off.
In the aftermath, with Frank having sacrificed himself to kill Caligula by deliberately burning up his firewood, a grief-stricken Hazel sends Arion to recover her boyfriend's body. Much to the shock and relief of everyone, Arion instead returns with a badly injured but very much alive Frank whose life is no longer tied to a piece of firewood. Apollo theorizes that by taking his fate into his own hands, Frank has forged a new fate for himself, although Juno possibly intervening is also suggested, but dismissed as unlikely. With Reyna leaving the legion to join the Hunters of Artemis, Hazel is unanimously elected Praetor in her place.
The Tower of Nero[]
After becoming a god again, Apollo visits New Rome where Hazel and Frank continue to lead the 12th Legion and are now the best Praetors that the legion has ever had. With Hazel's curse officially confirmed to be broken, she and Frank have begun using the uncursed jewels that she can summon to fund the temple building project that Jason Grace had started and that they are continuing in their fallen friend's honor.
Personality[]
Hazel is a little shy at first, but she opens up to her friends and eventually grows to be very sure of herself.
