Heaven Canceller, more commonly known as the Frog-Faced Doctor, is a major character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
An extraordinary talented doctor, he is the co-founder of Academy City and a long time acquaintance of its ruler, Aleister Crowley, being the one who built and oversees the machinery that keeps him alive. He often treats Touma Kamijou's injuries after his latest escapades.
He is voiced by Yutaka Nakano in Japanese and by the late Cole Brown and currently Bill Brooks in English.
Appearance[]
Heaven Canceller is an elderly, balding man with grey hair and matching eyebrows. His most notable trait is his face resembling that of a frog, which earned him his nickname, the "frog-faced doctor". He's normally seen wearing a white lab coat over a green shirt and often has a stethoscope around his neck. He also wears a pair of brown slippers.
Personality[]
Heaven Canceller is an extremely benevolent, compassionate and kind-hearted old man who faithfully follows the Hippocratic Oath and likes to be depended on by his patients. He is willing treat or heal anyone who comes to him, regardless of their background and if they're friend or foe. In the rare case that he's unable to help someone, he will become very disheartened, as shown by his regret of not being able to treat Touma's amnesia. It's heavily implied by his conversations with Accelerator that he has a dark past and has seen far more death and destruction than him.
Furthermore, due to his compassionate nature, Heaven Canceller can also become rather furious with those who put the lives of others at risk, best shown when he calls out Aleister Crowley for endangering his patients. Aleister states that he could easily be killed by Heaven Canceller if he were to shut down the device that extends Aleister's life. However, he takes no action to do so since he still views Aleister as one of his patients and closest friends. In addition, he's also quite disdainful of Gensei Kihara due to the latter's lack of empathy towards the suffering his experiments cause.
Biography[]
Heaven Canceller's background is largely unknown and his real name hasn't been revealed as yet. However, prior to the beginning of the Index series, Heaven Canceller was the one who saved Aleister Crowley's life while he was both on the verge of death and being hunted relentlessly by the entire Magic Side, taking refuge in a small European village. While he was treating him, Heaven Canceller inspired and urged Aleister to create Academy City in Japan, saying he would help him in any way. Despite being one of the two de facto creators of Academy City, he decided to remain an ordinary doctor as he always has been.
At some point in time, Heaven Canceller created Dark Legacy, a powerful medical device that's able to repair the human body. However, he later discarded it for unknown reason, presumably because it was unethical.

- Genius-Level Intellect: As the co-founder of Academy City, Heaven Canceller is a very intelligent individual, possessing keen scientific aptitude and experience. He is the creator of Dark Legacy, a medical device which is able to instantly repair the entire human body, regardless of the damage. He is also incredibly perceptive, both mentally and emotionally. He's easily able to guess what his patients wants to accomplish and usually already knows what they have in mind. He also has backup plans just in case he can't give a patient what they want.
- Medical Mastery: Heaven Canceller is an extremely gifted and skilled physician, having the uncanny ability to heal and cure virtually anything, including terminal illnesses or mortal wounds. His methods are apparently so advanced and powerful that he is able to distort the laws of God in order to save his patients. However, despite his great healing prowess, Heaven Canceller is incapable of bringing the dead back to life. He is also unable to heal any brain related injuries, such as Touma's amensia or Accelerator's mental computation.
