Lord Heinkel Astrea, also known as Heinkel the Idle, is a supporting character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name.

Heinkel Astrea was the son of Wilhelm van Astrea and Theresia van Astrea, and the father of Reinhard van Astrea. Though a skilled warrior, he paled in comparison to the rest of his family. Embittered by his past experiences and feelings of inadequacy, Astrea was a drunkard who shirked on his duties as the patriarch of House Astrea and vice captain of the Lugunican Royal Guard. He was obsessed with locating a cure for his wife Louanna, who suffered from an eternal slumber, and would stop at almost nothing to restore her.

Heinkel Astrea is voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in Japanese and by an unidentified actor in English. Tsuda has also voiced Kento Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh!, Dainsleif in Genshin Impact, Kishibe in Chainsaw Man, Atomic Samurai in One Punch Man, Hannes in Attack on Titan, and Orsted in Mushoku Tensei.

Appearance[]

Heinkel Astrea was a middle-aged man with light skin and a muscular build who stood at six feet and one inch tall. Like other members of House Astrea, Heinkel had sky blue eyes, fiery red hair, and was considered handsome. He had thin eyebrows and wrinkles on his face. His hair was unkempt and cut short, and he had untended stubble on his face. His natural attractiveness was said to be diminished by his poor attitude and lack of grooming.

Astrea was usually garbed in a practical yet well worn outfit consisting of brown pants, black knee-high boots, long black gloves, a tattered brown cape that reached his feet, a long black shirt with tattered sleeves and an upturned collar, brown leather bracers, and a brown leather cuirass with attached pauldrons.

Synopsis[]

Legacy of the Sword Saint[]

Heinkel Astrea was a member of House Astrea, a venerable noble family of the Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica. Lugunica, the easternmost of the four great nations of the world, was a feudal kingdom that revered the Holy Dragon Volcanica, who protected and nurtured the nation in accordance with a covenant it upheld with the Lugunican Royal Family. Unlike a majority of Lugunican noble families that derived their prestige from their territory or wealth, House Astrea owed its status to the generations of honorable and remarkable warriors that protected Lugunica.

House Astrea was descended from the brother of the Sword Saint Reid Astrea who, alongside Volcanica and the Sage, defeated the Witch of Envy who had nearly succeeded in destroying the world four centuries ago. Every generation, a member of House Astrea was chosen by an enigmatic entity known as the Sword God to bear the Sword Saint title. By the Sword God's will, the Sword Saint of each generation inherited the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint, a blessing that granted them unparalleled skill and power as a warrior, as well as the Dragon Sword Reid, the greatest blade in the world.

Heinkel Astrea was born to Theresia van Astrea, the Sword Saint of the current generation, and Wilhelm van Astrea, a renowned knight known as the "Sword Demon." As the greatest warrior of the kingdom, the Sword Saint was duty-bound to serve Lugunica. However, Theresia had never wished to become the Sword Saint and had no love for combat. Wilhelm desired to free Theresia from her obligations, and so trained vigorously to surpass her, hoping that by defeating her in a fight he could take on her burden as the nation's mightiest. He eventually succeeded, which allowed Theresia to retire her sword.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Physical Augmentation: All human beings were born with a gate, a metaphysical apparatus within a person's body that autonomously absorbed the ambient magical energy that existed in the atmosphere and stored it in the individual's od (soul). A popular technique among noteworthy warriors was "Mana Flow," which consisted of an individual enhancing their physical capabilities by channelling their magical energy throughout their body. Though Astrea was not an exceptional warrior, he was nevertheless capable of using Mana Flow to a certain degree. He was able to enhance his strength enough to lift trees, though it somewhat strained him to do so.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Swordsmanship: As a member of House Astrea, Heinkel Astrea trained in the art of swordplay from a young age. Though his skill paled in comparison to the remarkable members of his lineage and other gifted warriors, he was nevertheless an expert swordsman capable of single-handedly defeating multiple highly-trained opponents at once. Astrea's swordplay surpassed that of most duellists and was considered elegant and beautiful. His craft was so honed that he could fight instinctively, without the need for thought, when needed.

Equipment[]

  • Holy Sword Astrea: Heinkel Astrea's blade of choice was the "Holy Sword Astrea," an exquisite one-handed sword passed down through the generations of House Astrea. He received the weapon from his father Wilhelm van Astrea, who in turn received it from Heinkel's grandfather Veltol Astrea. Despite his estrangement from the rest of his family, Heinkel continued to wield the Holy Sword Astrea with elegant efficiency in combat.
