Helm Hammerhand is the overarching protagonist of the 2024 anime fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. He is the father of Hèra, Haleth, and Háma.
He is voiced by Brian Cox, who also portrayed Michael Hogan.
Appearance[]
Helm was, despite his age as shown through his white hair and beard, an incredibly large and muscular man. He originally wore regal Rohan attire and the crown of the realm. After recovering from numerous arrow wounds, he would later wear just a simple outfit of a sleeveless top and rugged trousers.
Personality[]
Helm was a man with an indomitable will, who held dominance over the kingdom of Rohan; however, he was generally a just and compassionate ruler, thus most Rohirrim were allowed secure and content lives in his domain, although the more ambitious and greedy would be protected by his reign too, enabling their scheming. His strong will could make him stubborn, which would be further complicated by his pride and temper; when Freca attempted to marry his son Wulf to Helm's daughter Hèra through coercion, Helm rejected it, and eventually accepted the challenge to fight. Indicative of Helm's fearlessness in the face of battle, he would always confront an adversary himself, never allowing a proxy to fight in his stead, whether it be simple fist fight or leading the vanguard into an opposing army. Despite his wisdom, Helm would ironically overestimate the strength of the rebellious overweight man, as after receiving a few hits from Freca, he gave one in response, but with such strength it killed the upstart.
Helm was a stern, yet loving father, however, his desire to protect his children would make him hide his own affection out of a misguided belief it would make them weak. While he wasn't abusive, he was typically cold to his family members, particularly his nephew, Frealaf, although that was largely due to the young man failing to prevent Hera's kidnapping - with Helm refusing to forgive him even though he had saved her. Helm's sons tended be allowed more freedom due to being males and the presumptive heirs, whereas he would try to be controlling of Hèra in regards to her life and future; Helm's intent to restrict Hèra's movements and marry her off to a Gondorian prince were not from lack of love, but an abundance of it. As Hèrawas more wild and capricious than his sons, he felt more fearful about her safety, thus despite actually being proud of who she was, he originally acted uncaring to force her into an unwanted marriage, but one that would place her within Gondor, the most powerful kingdom of Men.
Despite being ruthless, he could be reasoned with, as after Wulf threatened him to avenge Freca's death, Helm almost killed Wulf too, but Hèra's plea for mercy for her childhood friend merely made him banish the young man instead - although, to disastrous effects. When banished, Wulf rallied an army of wild men and mercenaries, but due to his father's weakness and ineptitude, Helm failed to consider his true threat, thus leading to the conflagration of Edoras (albeit after it was safely evacuated thanks to Hera), but also Wulf murdering his eldest son, Haleth. While Helm was wounded by several arrows, what truly hurt him was the death of his son, which was compounded later.
Helm was a leader of honour and duty, however, his one weakness was his family, as when his second son Háma is held hostage by Wulf, he offered to surrender and abdicate the throne; even caring deeply for his people, his love for his children was stronger, and as such, when Wulf rejected the offer by murdering Háma, shortly afterwards, Helm fell into a coma out of grief for weeks. When he recovered, he was unable to properly process his grief, thereby went on a frenzy of murdering Wulf's soldiers under the cover of the winter snows.
Helm would kill two orcs, then fist fight a troll, allowing the opportunity for Hèra to kill it with a javelin; while seeming feral, Helm quickly returned to reason upon seeing his daughter. Helm finally apologised for trying to suppress her true nature, and revealed that he was proud of her strengths and willpower. In a final act of devotion, Helm remained outside the Hornburg gates as to prevent Wulf's men from entering and reaching Hèra; even suffering numerous injuries, Helm managed to battle single-handedly against a flow of enemies all night, only dying due to the severe frost.
Biography[]
In his first appearance, Helm is the first seen emerging from the shadows and entering the hall and goes to sit on the throne, followed by his children. Lief tries to announce who he is, but Helm interrupts him that they already know when they see him.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Immense Willpower
- Charisma
- Leadership Skills: He would earn the steadfast loyalty of any decent Rohirrim, however, the devious ones he couldn't sway.
- Skilled Strategist: While he was once a strategist without equal, his complacency in peace and his own pride made him fail to make sensible decisions.
- Skilled Tactician: In battle itself, he is unparalleled in skill and strength, with only weakness being the necessity to protect his subjects, and perhaps had an inability to comprehend the mind of someone with malice and hatred in their heart.
- Superhuman Strength
- Superhuman Endurance
- Superhuman Stamina
- Indomitable Pain Threshold: Despite suffering many wounds, his momentum was never slowed nor was he weakened, as only psychological injuries could cause him pain.
- Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Helm was able to rip apart armoured enemy soldiers with his bare hands, and could even hold his own in a brawl against a troll, which are notoriously strong creatures.
- Master Swordsman
- Expert Horseman: Like most residents of Rohan, he was an adept horseman, although required a strong mount due to his exceptional muscle mass.

Trivia[]
- Helm being pierced by multiple arrows but persisting could be a nod to Boromir's death in The Fellowship of the Ring; although unlike Helm, Boromir died from the arrows because they mainly clustered in his chest.
- Many people may think Helm's death after fighting endless opponents and remaining on his feet despite dying may be a reference to Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate from One Piece, who was a beloved, and also an elderly but immensely muscular man who likewise suffered multiple fatal injuries, yet managed to fight longer than seeming possible, and upon death, still remained standing. In actuality, Helm's death predated, "One Piece," by a few decades.
- Due to his bravery, selflessness, and strength, the Hornburg was renamed Helm's Deep.
