Hemmer was a supporting character on the series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He was played by Canadian actor Bruce Horak.
Hemmer was a male Aenar subspecies of the Andorian species. Like all other Aenar he was blind but had strong telepathic abilities and his other senses more than made up for his lack of eyesight. Hemmer did not see his lack of eyesight as a disability or impairment. He joined Starfleet because he believed his purpose in life was to fix what was broken and felt the Federation's Starfleet would be a good place to do that.
In 2259 he was posted to the USS Enterprise as chief engineer, succeeding Louvier. Like other Aenar he was a pacifist who would not fight, but would instead do what he had to in order to protect his shipmates. Hemmer took a particular shine to the young Cadet Nyota Uhura, who had been posted to Enterprise from the academy for a training cycle. When she was unsure of what to do with her life, he encouraged her to find her purpose, and would have a strong effect on her development as a Starfleet officer. Hemmer was also friends with Lieutenant Spock, and the two liked to engage in hazing new cadets.
While on a mission to Beta V to recover the USS Peregrine, he was sprayed by a Gorn hatchling with a fluid containing Gorn eggs and a dose of venom. Realizing that there were more Gorn hatchlings growing inside him, Hemmer sacrificed himself by exiting the Peregrine and jumping into a chasm to keep the hatchlings from being able to emerge from him while he was still inside the Peregrine. His sacrifice ensured the safety of the landing party and allowed the Enterprise to recover the Peregrine.
