Henry Emily, also known as the Cassette Man, is the overarching protagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
He is the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment, alongside his business partner William Afton, and help created the technology for the animatronics. After Afton murdered his daughter Charlotte, he would dedicate his life to searching for him and his victims, and rectifying his sins, gaining the help of William's son Michael in the last year of their lives.
He was voiced by Dave Steele.
In the video games, Henry is the unseen overarching protagonist of the ScottGames era and the posthumous overarching protagonist of the Steel Wool era. He serves as a mentioned character in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, the unseen deuteragonist of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, the posthumous overarching protagonist of Ultimate Custom Night and Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted, and a posthumous protagonist in Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.
He also appears as the posthumous overarching protagonist of the Novel Trilogy. It's speculated that he had a counterpart in the Fazbear Frights anthology novel series that's long dead by the time of its events.
Henry was the business partner of William Afton and co-owner of Fredbear's Family Diner and Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, as well as the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment. Their partnership included Henry building the Animatronics of the restaurants while Afton handled the business.
Henry was also the father of Charlotte, or "Charlie", as she was nicknamed, who ended up as Afton's first murdered victim and went on to possess The Puppet. Afton then committed five more murders, causing the Missing Children Incident. After both Freddy's and Fredbear's closed down, Henry left the company. Years or even decades later, he finally found out that William murdered the children and that they are possessing the animatronics. Although contemplating suicide due to his guilt, Henry decided that he first needs to fix everything before dying.
Years passed, and after the events of Fazbear's Fright: The Horror Attraction, Afton was released into the world as the undead human/animatronic hybrid Springtrap, alongside two of his creations; Molten Freddy, an amalgamation of his animatronics, and Scrap Baby, possessed by Afton's own daughter Elizabeth.
Henry knew that he had to work to free the souls of the children, as well as defeat Afton/Springtrap once and for all. Henry eventually masterminded a plan to have an unknowing volunteer begin owning and operating a pizzeria so that he may gather all of the remaining possessed animatronics in one place, where he could then destroy them and liberate the souls. Henry hired Afton's son Michael Afton. Originally planning a way out for him, Henry eventually scrapped the idea as he thought Michael wished for death, although keeping him in the dark about his true intentions.
Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator
Using a cassette player, Henry instructed Michael on how to operate the restaurant and how to complete salvage of the animatronics he left in the alley, feigning the fact that their origins were unknown. He made sure to gather all of the animatronics, including Springtrap, in the restaurant by a certain day.
In the game's Completion Ending, all of the animatronics are gathered together, and Henry comes on for one last transmission. He explains his plans and why he believes this is the only way to solve the problems of the past. He pleads with the souls in the animatronics to find peace, while damning Afton to Hell, before speaking to Lefty, who was designed to contain the Puppet inside its suit.
He reveals that the Puppet is possessed by his daughter, who was William‘s first known victim. He apologizes to his daughter for not being there at the time of her death to save her, before declaring that it is time for all of the tragedies surrounding Fazbear Entertainment to be put to rest. As he monologues, he lights the place on fire, burning the animatronics, Michael, and himself in the process. Fazbear Entertainment was then shut down.
Henry, however, didn't expect one thing; The vengeful soul inside Golden Freddy wouldn't let William die and forcefully kept him alive, making him the sole survivor of the fire, although immobilized and constantly tormented in his nightmares. This would start the chain of events leading to Afton's return as Glitchtrap and later Burntrap. Molten Freddy seemingly also survived the fire.
In the Insanity Ending where the player accesses the Egg Baby Data Archive, they hear Henry confessing to what he has done, but that he plans to make things right. Upon reporting what they have learned, the player's character is deemed insane and sent to receive a lobotomy.
If none of the possessed animatronics are salvaged, Henry will say that requirements of the player's job were not met, and will fire the player's character. It is unknown what he would do afterwards.
Henry (or the Cassette Man) is shown to be very serious and stern, only seeking revenge and the liberation of the trapped souls. While his goals and objectives are noble, his methods are extreme, as his only solution is to destroy all of the animatronics, the player's character (a total innocent, as they had no idea what was happening), and himself in a blaze. He is shown to be extremely intelligent and manipulative, as (at least in the Good Ending) has successfully gotten all of his targets together and gotten the player's character to complete that task without even knowing. Despite his extreme methods, he really is a tragic character, losing his daughter and feeling destroyed over her loss, swearing to avenge her and set her free.
- It was theorized that Henry made his first appearance in FNAF World. After defeating Chica's Magic Rainbow, the pixelated grey character expresses sorrow for his actions to the player, eventually being killed by his own creation, Baby.
- However, it is extremely likely that the character is another metaphor for Scott Cawthon, the creator of the series. Besides, William in-universe created Baby, not Henry, and this would mean that Henry is aware that he is in a video game.
- The stories that Candy Cadet tells, might be related to Henry, who tried to protect the five children from William, but failed, so he decided to gather the remaining animatronics and end the suffering.
