NOTE: This article is about Henry from the Novel Trilogy. If you want to see his video game counterpart, please visit this page.

My old faithful partner, who I can only hope now is in a grave of his own, took what I had begun, and made something of his own — something dreadful. He crafted my beloved work into something of his own, and endowed it with who knows what kinds of evil. I was able to stop him, and to seal away what he made, and you, Jenny, must ensure that the seal remains. I would instruct you to demolish the house if I could trust that it could be done effectively. Keep it, and make sure the world forgets it. Then, someday, after many decades have passed and no one remembers, fill it with every kind of flammable thing and burn it to the ground, standing close guard to put a bullet into anything that emerges from the rubble, no matter what, or who, it looks like. I’m going to be with my daughter. Love always and to the end, Henry.
~ The last words of Henry's suicide note to his sister Jenny.

Henry Emily is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Michael Brooks) of the Five Nights at Freddy's Novel Trilogy.

He was the founder and owner of Fredbear's Family Diner and its successor, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, which he opened with his best friend, William Afton. He was also the father of Charlotte and Sammy Emily. After Charlotte's death at Afton's hands, a grieving Henry built a robot clone of her as a new daughter. After numerous frustrations and a deteriorating sanity surrounding his creation of Charlotte's duplicates, he eventually committed suicide.

Appearance[]

Henry was a middle-aged man with fair skin and brown hair. He often wore white flannel shirts with dark pants. He also had stubble around his chin. Without the stubble, he closely resembled his best friend William Afton.

Personality[]

Henry was a very loving, supportive, and caring man. He deeply loved both his children and was a proud father. One of his most defining characters traits was his love for mechanical engineering and creativity so much so, he was described as having a childlike sense of imagination. He always enjoyed making animatronic characters and building toys for his Charlie. However things would take a dark turn for him when Afton murdered Charlie. When his family fell apart he became a shell of his former self. He was depressed, lonely, broken and unable to cope with his grief. Clay even outright claims that he was shell shocked. His grief ultimately caused him to go insane by building duplicates of his daughter to pretend she is still alive. However his insanity ultimately consumed him as he lost his sense of reality. It was at that point Henry became angry, spiteful and bitter. He disregarded the final duplication of Charlie and insulted her and locked her away (which would ultimately cause her fall to evil). He even outright claimed that he wanted everything that he went through and all his pain to not only end but be destroyed and forgotten. In the end Henry’s will was not strong enough and he committed suicide to finally end his pain.

History[]

Henry Emily lived in New Harmony, Utah, with his wife, his sister Jenny, and his best friend William Afton. His wife would give birth to twin children in 1983: Charlotte and Sammy. Henry loved both of them dearly, especially Charlotte, and he and William would establish Fredbear's Family Diner, which featured animatronic mascots performed by the duo. Henry, a master inventor, also constructed various toys for her, such as Theodore the rabbit and Stanley the unicorn.

In 1983, while the Emily twins were playing in the diner's costume closet, William, disguised in the Spring Bonnie suit, kidnapped and murdered Charlotte. Her death resulted in the diner being closed down and Henry's wife divorcing him and taking Sammy with her. Henry was grief-stricken by his daughter's death, buying a doll resembling her named Ella and apparently crying with her for two months. Through paranormal means, his agony caused Ella to be imbued with life. Overjoyed, Henry decided to take advantage of this by constructing a robot resembling Charlotte and placing Ella inside her, producing a sentient replica of his daughter. Henry would find solace in the Charlotte robot and go on to create two other duplicates at older ages, despite Jenny's objections and attempts to reason with him.

As Henry constructed Charlotte's final adult body, he began to go mad and become enraged over his misfortunes. Feeling that the adult body was imperfect, he didn’t even bother finishing it and left it to rot in his workshop. However, Henry didn’t bother to turn in off and it stood there in the darkness twitching as it watched Henry give attention to the other Charlie. This culminated in it attacking Charlie one night before being shut down by Henry. However Afton soon stole it and transformed it into his own creation; Circus Baby. However Baby would end up murdering Afton’s daughter Elizabeth which caused her to be possessed. Henry eventually took back Baby and was shown to have gained contempt for her seeing her as a byproduct of his own rage and failures. Thus he hid it away in one of the four closets in Charlotte's room where it would remain for years to come.

Henry and William (the latter unaware that Afton killed Charlotte) would move to Hurricane, Utah, and open Freddy Fazbear's Pizza with new animatronic mascots, which Charlotte's duplicate would visit with her friends. Around 1985, one of Charlotte's friends, Michael Brooks, among four other children, were kidnapped and murdered by William in the pizzeria. Although William was arrested, he was never tried as his victims' bodies were never found. After the pizzeria was closed, the people of Hurricane starting accusing Henry for the murders, putting a strain on him mentally.

in July 1985, Henry's pain overwhelmed him and, after writing a suicide note to Jenny, he would kill himself via being stabbed by an endoskeleton he constructed.

Following his death, Jenny would raise Charlotte herself, who would grow up to eventually uncover his past and confront William and Baby with her friends.

Trivia[]

  • Henry's design was heavily changed in the graphic novel adaptations. In the original description he was given in the novels he was stated to be a man with light brown messy hair and a tendency to wear flannel shirts. However in the graphic novels his design appears near identical to William Afton's having dark brown hair and a white shirt. It's likely this is an oversight or a coloring error as Claudia Schroder's illustration of Henry had light brown hair.
    • It is most likely for this reason that when Henry's appearance was revealed in the games, it was more faithful to his original description in the novels. It could have also been done to different him from William.
