Heroine Overview

I'm highly logical which allows me to look past extraneous detail and perceive clearly that which others overlook.
~ Hermione Granger
Now - if you two don't mind - I'm going to bed. Before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed, or worse, expelled.
~ Hermione to Ron and Harry after their encounter with Fluffy.

Hermione Jean Granger (born September 19, 1979) is the daughter of Muggles Mr. and Mrs. Granger who were both dentists in the Muggle London, and the tritagonist of the Harry Potter franchise.

She learned, at the age of eleven, that she was a witch and had been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hermione began attending the school on 1 September 1991, when she was eleven, almost twelve, and was sorted into Gryffindor House. During her years of Hogwarts, Hermione would become the best friend of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, and the latter would become her boyfriend, husband, and father to their children. She would assist the two in fighting against Lord Voldermort, a power hungry wizard who has personal ties to Harry's past.

She is portrayed by Emma Watson, who also portrays Belle in the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast. In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, she was portrayed by Noma Dumezweni in the West End production.

History

Birth

Born in 1979, September 19, Hermione was born to Muggle parents, Mr. and Mrs. Granger. They both found that Hermione's abilities were beyond the norm of an average child, though they were positively proud of the way their daughter performed.

Soon finding out she was a wizard with powers, Hermione was ecstatic and surprised by the news, and was accepted by the magical school of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, allowing her to attend and control her wonderful gifts.

At the age of 11, Hermione was finally of age to attend Hogwarts, much to her excitement, and upon arriving at King's Cross Station on Platform 9 3/4, she met both Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley. They sat in the same train car together, filled with excitement for the next seven years to come of being friends and attending Hogwarts, learning new things about the world of magic.

Life at Hogwarts (1991 - 1997)

Upon arriving at Hogwarts, she, alongside Harry and Ron, was led to the Great Hall, where she and all the other newcomer students would be sorted into the four Houses of Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Hermione was sorted by the Sorting Hat into the Gryffindor House, along with both Harry and Ron, and she was excited to welcomed by everyone who was a member of the House. The Sorting Hat believed that Hermione would've been a great addition to Ravenclaw House instead.

When she attended her first class, everyone was surprised at how much Hermione knew of mostly everything, always raising her hand to answer every question asked. Even the professors were amazed by how knowledgeable the young Muggle-born witch was with the wizarding world. On her first day, though, Ron was corrected by her, after he said a spell incantation wrong, and after class, Ron insulted her by mimicking her and saying that there was no wonder in her not having friends, upsetting her. She ran away to a bathroom and cried in a stall, but a Troll had followed her into the bathroom and she was attacked by it, though was saved by Harry and Ron, becoming friends immediately after that.

Hermione was helpful towards her fellow classmates who struggled with their magic, including Neville Longbottom, who had high self-doubt in his abilities to achieve in school, though she eagerly helped him to overcome the doubt he had for himself. An academically brilliant, responsible, and hardworking student, Hermione became best friends with fellow Gryffindors Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in her first year of school. When they first met on the Hogwarts Express, Harry and Ron thought of her as obnoxious and bossy, a belief that she only furthered as the school year went on, besting them in every class. However, when Ron and Harry saved her from a troll, she took the blame for them and became their friend.

In her second year, Hermione was one of the victims of the basilisk that was unleashed upon Hogwarts with the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, but recovered from being petrified. She is also being called Mudblood by Draco Malfoy causing Hermione to hate Draco. The next year, Hermione was given permission to use a Time-Turner to facilitate her attending more classes than other students, and which she and Harry later used to save Sirius Black from receiving the Dementor's Kiss, and Buckbeak the Hippogriff from execution. Hermione became an advocate for the better treatment of house-elves, forming the association S.P.E.W., in her fourth year.

She was the driving force behind the creation of Dumbledore's Army, and fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and the Battle of the Seven Potters. Hermione, as well as Ron, decided to forgo their last year of school in order to accompany Harry on his quest to find and destroy Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes, and later fought in the Battle of Hogwarts and survived the war.

Biography

Early Life

Hermione Jean Granger was born on 19 September 1979 to Mr. and Mrs. Granger, who were muggles, meaning they had no connection to magic. Despite this, Hermione displayed magical potential at an early age, and her parents were noted to be very proud with her. When she was eleven years old, Hermione was surprise to learn that she was a witch, and was accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Accepting the invitation to go off to Hogwarts, Hermione collected her books for her first year, and started to study early and more about the wizarding world.

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (The Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

While onboard the Hogwarts Express, Hermione met Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, asking the two had they've seen Neville Longbottom's toad. She showed off her ability to use magic to the two, and also expressed wanting to be sorted into House Gryffindor or House Ravenclaw. Once going into Hogwarts, Hermione was shorted into House Gryffindor since she wanted to be in, similar to how Harry didn't want to be in House Slytherin. Granger showed herself to have a natural talent with magic, being the best in all of classes which caused her to be seen as a bossy know-it-all by some of her classmates. She also was known to follow the rules and tried to prevent others from doing so, such as when she followed Harry and Ron when they were going to duel Draco Malfoy. The trio then ran off when they were chased by Argus Filch, and encountered the dog Fluffy.

Hermione's bossy attitude with her tendency to be a know-it-all caused some of her classmates to make fun of her, notably Ron Weasley, who stated that she had no friends. After hearing one of Ron's unkind remarks, Hermione stayed in the girls bathroom during Halloween and cried. When she encountered the troll, she was saved by Harry and Ron, and lied to the professors that she had lured the troll to cover for the two. The three formed a strong friendship, and Hermione assisted Harry and Ron in helping Rubeus Hagrid with his dragon egg, or investigating Nicholas Flamel and the philosopher's stone.

hen Harry believed that Severus Snape was trying to steal the philosopher's stone, Hermione and Ron assisted him in going through the chambers under Fluffy. Hermione helped Ron free himself from devil's snare, and later solved Snape's potion riddle, allowing Harry to enter the chamber. In the chamber, Harry learned that it was actually Quirinus Quirrell who was trying to steal with stone with Lord Voldermort, who acted at his host. Afterward, Hermione was awarded fifty points for Gryffindor for solving the riddle, allowing their house to win the house cup.

The Chamber of Secrets

After her first year, Hermione tried to keep in contact with Harry by sending him letters, but they were intercepted by the house-elf Dobby. The elf wanted to make Harry think that his friends had forgotten him so he wouldn't go to Hogwarts, but failed as Harry was able to reunite with Hermione and Ron. Presumably before 1992, Hermione gained a crush on Gilderoy Lockhart, who would become the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. During the second year, Hermione was a victim of prejudice for her blood status, as Draco called her a "mudblood". She was hurt by the comment, and Ron and his brothers, Fred and George attempted to attack Draco for saying it. Ron tried to hex Draco, but failed as his wand backfired since he damaged it from the Whomping Willow.

When Argus Filch's cat and other students are found petrified, Hogwarts starts to believe that the chamber of secrets has been reopened. Hermione would ask Professor Binns about the chamber, and he informed the class about Salazar Slytherin having built a secret chamber in the school that held a creature. Binns then told the class that Slytherin's heir had used the creature to kill a muggle born student named Myrtle Warren, now known as the ghost "Moaning Myrtle". Harry suggested that Draco was the heir, and Hermione agreed, believing they should brew a polyjuice potion to transform themselves into Slytherin students to get a confession from Malfoy. She managed to create the potion, but was unable to join Harry and Ron on the ruse since she transformed into a human cat, as she had instead collected Millicent Bulstrode's cats hair.

Harry and Ron would transform into Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle and speak with Malfoy, but realized that he wasn't the heir. Months after, Hermione was able to gather enough information from Harry stating that he could hear voices and that he was a parselmouth, and realized that the creature was a Basilisk. Rushing to the library, Hermione warned Penelope Clearwater about the creature, telling her to use a mirror to see the creature's reflection.

She was later petrified by the Basilisk when they saw the monster's eyes in the mirror, allowing her and Penelope to survive. Though she was left petrified for the rest of the school year, she managed to help Harry and Ron since she obtained a piece of paper that spoke of the Basilisk, and left the note "pipes" to tell them how the creature was able to get across the school. This information allowed the two to stop Voldermort, the Basilisk, and rescue Ginny. Hermione and the others that were petrified were returned to normal, and she greeted her friends before the school year ended.

The Prisoner of Azkaban

Before the start of her third year, Hermione adopted a cat whom she named Crookshanks, which caused her friendship with Ron to become strained since the cat wanted to his pet rat, Scabbers. Upon her first day at Hogwarts, Hermione was given a time-turner by Professor McGonagall so she could double up on her classes. Though given the time-turner, McGonagall told Hermione not to tell anyone, as she had to speak with the Ministry of Magic many times so she could be given it. During her third year, her friendships with Harry and Ron became strained, as she had to keep the time-turner a secret, caused Harry to lose the firebolt broom stick, and Ron believed that Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers. However, Harry and Ron would apologize to her after Hagrid had them see their selfishness, but Hermione became focused on defending the hippogriff Buckbeak from being executed.

Hermione would go on to deduce that Remus Lupin, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, was werewolf after seeing his Boggart was the full moon, his absences, and Snape teaching the class werewolves (as it wasn't on the schedule). She wouldn't tell anyone about this, however, presumably due to seeing Remus as a good person. During the day of Buckbeak's execution, Hermione slapped Draco for mocking Hagrid's tears, and met Hagrid in his shack to comfort him. Scabbers was found in the shack, and bit Ron before running off, and the trio chased him before being attacked by a black dog. The dog dragged Ron beneath the Whomping Willow, and Hermione and Harry reunited with Ron in the Shrieking Shack. In the shack, the dog turned into Sirius Black, who was believed to have caused the death of Harry's parents, James Potter and Lily Evans.

Lupin arrived at the shack, and the trio learned that Sirius was framed by Peter Pettigrew, who has been hiding as Ron's pet rat. When leaving the shack, Lupin transformed into a werewolf when the full moon arrived, and Hermione assisted Harry in trying to protect Sirius from the Dementors. After awaking in the hospital wing, Hermione was given vague instructive tasks by Albus Dumbledore to use the time-turner to save Sirius and Buckbeak. At the end of the third year, Hermione decided to return the time-turner, seeing time-traveling as dangerous.

Personality and Traits

Hermione Granger was an extremely intelligent and hard-working young woman, often being, as most say, the "brightest witch of her age", implying how much she knows about magic and magic-related subjects. She is often known to be the smartest in class, answering all the questions that are asked by her professors, though she was rudely called out for her knowledge by Professor Snape, saying that she "takes pride in being an insufferable know-it-all". She was a sort of a perfectionist when it came to her school-life, correcting Ron when he said a spell incantation incorrectly, being somewhat of a nag to even her own friends.

Most of the time, her intelligence has brought Harry and Ron to overcome their obstacles, such as when they were hunting the Horcruxes and Ron became severely injured when they apparated to a different location, having packed something to help the injury heal quickly and remove the pain. She is shown to be quite protective of her closest friends, especially of Harry, knowing full well of his past traumatic experiences with losing his parents, nearly being killed by Voldemort, and being abused by his aunt and uncle.

She doesn't like seeing Harry or Ron in pain, an example being Harry on the ground in the Ministry of Magic, trying to overcome Voldemort's control of his mind while she watched with the rest of the group, seeing Dumbledore helping Harry. However, Harry, and Hermione are rarely seen to have arguments, unlike her and Ron, though they can be seen sometimes disagreeing with each other's judgment, not thinking it can be trusted, seeing how Harry wants to go to the Ministry headquarters and help his godfather, Sirius Black, who was being attacked by Voldemort and Nagini, while searching for something that concerned Harry himself, Hermione didn't know whether she could trust Sirius's judgment on the matter, though Harry wanted to leave immediately.

Explained by J.K. Rowling herself, she stated that Hermione's protective side is so great that if she were to look in the Mirror of Erised, she would've seen her "friends unharmed and Voldemort would've been defeated".

Notes

  • Hermoine Granger is based on JK Rowling herself.
  • Her physical appearance is very different in the novels, as she has buck teeth, but not in the movies.
  • She is seen in Castaras as a puppet in the song Avada Kedava.
