Biography[]
Past[]
Hjalmar an Craite was born in 1248 as the first born son of the leader of his clan an Craite named Crach, five years later his younger sister named Cerys was born. In his youth, Hjalmar participated in the annual organized skating competition known as moose jumping on An Skellig in which Hjalmar was always a champion.
Meeting with Ciri[]
Fifteen years later, Hjalmar met a teenage Cintryan girl named Cirilla where she challenged him to see who could make the longest jump from a high canyon, the girl jumped without a problem and Hjalmar not wanting to be a sucker also jumped and ended up breaking his leg, arm, four ribs and damaged his face. This incompressible accident left Hjalmar with a crooked face and scars on his face forever, for which reason Hjalmar was nicknamed Slackjaw.
After Hjalmar's tragic jump, he was taken to the hospital, bandaged and recovering, lying in bed, and Ciri came to Skellige to Hjalmar to read books and tell stories for him. Some time later in the spring, Hjalmar told his father that he had fallen in love with an eleven-year-old Ciri.
When the Cintra queen Calanthe found out about Ciri, she was engaged to Hjalmar, who was many years older than her, and the queen was dissatisfied and took Ciri with her to Cintra, despite her granddaughter's objections. Although the queen had wedding plans for her granddaughter, but due to Ciri's marriage to Hjalmar, she decided to hide her plans from everyone who did not know her plans. Due to Ciri's departure from the skelige, he decided to cut himself off from the world for two days, and when he completely recovered, Hjalmar decided to steal a powerful ship and sail to Cintra to meet Ciri, but his father forbade and prevented his plans to sail to Cintra.
The Nilfgaard War[]
Some time later, a few months later, when Nilfgaardian forces conquered the Cintrian kingdom, a massacre took place there, which made Hjalmar believe that Ciri, whom he had fallen in love with, had died, so he decided to take revenge on Nilgaard for Ciri's unfortunate death. During the Second Northern War, Hjalmar took part in the Battles of Marnadal and Sodden against the Nilfgaardians.
Searching for Ciri[]
During the events on Thanedd, Hjalmar and her father are believed to have supported the uprising on Attre, where she failed. When Yennefer managed to escape from the Sorceresses' Swarm via Tereport to the Skellige Isles, she saw that Crach was on the island where she landed and asked for his help, to which the Jarl agreed, assigning her to a rescue mission under Hjalmar's leadership, where members of Tamar's crew volunteered, including Asa Thjazi and Guthlaf.
On August 28, Hjalmar's crew of volunteers, including Yennefer, set off towards the Sedna Deep. And on August 29, Hjalmar's crew saw the light of the Peixe de Mar lighthouse, when they landed, Yennefer ordered the above 8 participants to decide how to go to the second ship called Alkyone.
Hjalmar initially wanted to stay on his ship Tamara but Yennefer did not allow him to stay on the ship and all the crew members except Asa Thjazi who stayed to guard the ship. When everyone was keeping watch on the slope, the longship Alkyone sailed in and the sky turned black, creating magical storms, and the ship fell into a whirlpool. Tamara's crew tried to sail to the rescue, but everything was already too late because the Alkyone ship was spinning at enormous speed. To make matters worse, the crew, steered by Asy Thjazi, turned away from rowing when they heard terrifying screams from the spinning longship.
When the longship Alkyone begins to rise, the people on board the ship began to jump overboard in panic. On Asa Thazja's orders, his crew will swim closer and closer to the place where the men from the Alkyone crew jumped to fish out the survivors, but they only managed to catch two bodies from the water. Despite strange turns of events, Tamara's crew managed to return to Skellige.
Journal entry[]
The saying "like father, like son" fits Crach and his first born son to a tittle. Young Hjalmar took after his father in both posture and character, and many predicted that in time he would ovetake his elder in the honor and fame he would gain.
An extremely able, broad-shouldered swordsman, he had the makings of a superb warrior, and his charisma and tendency towards almost mad bravura meant he could stir the hearts of loot- and glory-craving youth from all Skellige's clans.
All these traits made Hjalmar an obvious choice for the next king of Skellige. He thus did not hesitate to stake his claim when the time for this arrived and immediately set off for Undvik to prove his heroism by battling the legendary Ice Giant.
Hjalmar accomplished what he set out to do. Fighting side by side with the witcher he defeated the fierce colossus of Undvik.
- If Geralt sides with Cerys in King's Gambit:
Though his sister was chosen to be ruler instead of him, Hjalmar did not bear a grudge and decided to lend her reign all his strength, an act that showed surprising political maturity.
When discussing Hjalmar's heroic deeds it surely must be mentioned that he did not hesitate to support Geralt by answering his call and defending Ciri at Kaer Morhen.
- If Geralt doesn't side with either Hjalmar or Cerys in King's Gambit:
Hjalmar's hot temper turned out to be his doom in the end. Young an Craite died alongside his sister while leading one of the first attacks on the Nilfgaardian fleet.
