~ The Holy Mother Dragon introducing herself to Dai. |
The Holy Mother Dragon is the overarching protagonist of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
She is a divine dragon created by the three gods to give birth to the Dragon Knights, hybrids between human, darkling and dragon to fight against evil and protect the balance of the Trio of Worlds. Because of this, she is Dai's paternal grandmother.
In the 2020 anime, she was voiced by Keiko Toda in Japanese and Nikki Rae Hallow in English.
Appearance[]
The Holy Mother Dragon is a large, white Western-like dragon with scales, horns, wings, claws, and a line of fur running from the beginning of her horns to the end of her tail. Her eyes has no sclera or a pupil but appears to be blue. She has a light aura to showcase her divine nature.
Personality[]
From what is shown, the Holy Mother Dragon is kind and understanding, determined to enforce order on the Trio of Worlds. She is willing to welcome Dai to Heaven instead of letting him go back to suffer more fights even though it is his duty to protect the mortal world. However, while divine, she is not omniscient, as she easily mistakes Dai as the Dragon Knight instead of his father, Baran. When Baran advises her to bring Dai back to fight against Vearn, she hesitates at first but reluctantly agrees, giving the world one final hope.
Biography[]
In the primordial times, when the three races of humans, darklings and dragons were engaging in neverending wars, the three gods: the God of Dragons, the God of Darklings and the Gods of Humans decided to create the Holy Mother Dragon, who would give birth to Dragon Knights, heroes that were mixtures of all three races that would fight against evil and maintain the balance of the Trio of Worlds. Once birthing the Dragon Knight, she would leave them to humans' care so they would grow up as a normal person, until the time came where they finally followed their destiny. Alongside the God of Dragons, she is worshipped by the people of Teran.
Her most recent Dragon Knight was Baran, who initially followed the duty and slayed the Abyss Dragon King Velzar. However, upon losing his wife Soala and suffering the betrayal of the humans from the Alkeed Kingdom, he snapped and destroyed the entire nation, before turning himself to Vearn. Fortunately, Baran's son, Dino, survived and was taken in by Brass, who named him Dai and raised him like his own grandson.
When Dai seemingly dies after the first confrontation with Vearn, the Holy Mother Dragon, mistaking him with Baran who just died a little while prior, takes his soul away and intends to take him to Heaven. When Dai speaks to her, she reveals that there will be no more Dragon Knights since her life force is nearing its end due to being eaten away by a great evil (likely Vearn). She also states that, since overcoming the Dragon Knights is likely what drives evil to become stronger, ending the line of them for good may be the best solution. When Dai expresses the concern that there will be no one to stop Vearn, the Holy Mother Dragon tells him to forget all battles and go to Heaven with her. Just then she realizes that Dai has two souls, with one turning out to be Baran himself, who confirms that he is the true Dragon Knight and the one who died, much to her shock. Baran convinces her to resurrect Dai to give the world one last chance. She hesitates at first, but he tells her that Dai is a gift from the gods, so she reluctantly agrees and gives Dai her remaining life force, before fading away for good. With her death, the line of Dragon Knights from now on will depend on Dai and his descendants.
