~ Hong Kong Phooey in the intro. |
Penrose "Penry" Pooch, better known as Hong Kong Phooey; the "number one super guy", is a martial artist and the titular main protagonist of the Hanna-Barbera animated TV series of the same name, who travels about the city in his "Phooeymobile" looking for any "Badguys" to fight and bring down to justice.
He uses the lessons to what crime he is going on as Penry, and then he changes to Hong Kong Phooey using the file cabinet (which usually gets stuck, so Spot has to bang it to open it) then Hong Kong Phooey pops out. The due then take the Phooeymobile and find out where the crime is taking place and stop it.
Biography[]
Is always seen fighting crime with the aid of his manual, The Hong Kong Book Of Kung Fu, and his bumbling antics would either get himself into several predicaments, or the villains would suffer from Hong Kong Phooey's incompetence always having wacky side effects that cause the villains to be defeated with bad luck (and another person's help solving the problem for him).
Personality[]
Penry acts very carefree, charismatic, smug, well-intentioned, and too brave to the point of mild arrogance and vanity; often being seen as the most calm, collected and relaxed whenever he is doing janitor patrol, and getting easily excited when he seeks to stop crime afoot for the thrill of being the town's most well known crime fighting hero (or at least, in his eyes). However, despite what his crime fighting ego implies, he is generally a nice guy despite being either oblivious, incompetent or otherwise misguided.
He seems to more then less of a dimwit, with his supposed kung fu skills that normally backfires on him and often relies on sheer dumb luck to gain any advantage, he usually brings Spot alongside with him, a yellow-furred feline who is usually getting the job done with helping Penry getting out of any given predicament that he gets himself into, which shows more so Penry himself being incredibly clumsy, reckless and absent-minded a large majority of the time. Hong Kong Phooey usually never knew or realize that Spot already did his job splendidly, in result Hong Kong Phooey thinks he had taken care of the bad guys, which results in Spot groaning and muttering in disappointment for Hong Kong Phooey's general lack of awareness.
Despite being a overall bumbling fool who spouts out dumb pseudo Chinese sayings, he can be quite discreet at times, as he seems to know how to keep his identity a secret to himself and never blare it out to the most unsuspecting of people. He can also have a level of wit, often providing wisecracks and having a good sense of humor towards his surroundings.
Identity[]
The stories begin at the police headquarters, where Hong Kong Phooey's alter ego, Penry, works as a mild-mannered janitor under the glare of Sergeant Flint ("Sarge"). Also at the police station is Rosemary, the telephone operator, who has a crush on Hong Kong Phooey. After Rosemary gets a call and explains the crime, Penry runs into a filing cabinet and (always getting stuck) transforms himself into Hong Kong Phooey.
Live Action[]
In 2009, live action/CGI hybrid film based on the character of the same name was announced with Eddie Murphy voicing Phooey himself. Test footage of the film was leaked on 28 December 2012 along with footage for a live action Marvin the Martian movie, the release date is unknown, and, due to the lack of updates, the films have likely been cancelled.
Trivia[]
