Alec Hoshin, better known as Hoshin of the Wastes and also known as the God of Commerce, is a mentioned character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and a major character in the 2022 non-canon comedy crossover anime film Isekai Quartet: The Movie – Another World.
Alec Hoshin was a legendary hero and tradesman who founded Kararagi, one of the four great nations, and was revered by merchants and businesspeople around the world. Unlike many of his equally-legendary allies, Hoshin's epic deeds and influence were built around intelligence and bargaining rather than brute force. Anastasia Hoshin, a prominent present day businesswoman, named herself after Hoshin.
Alec Hoshin is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese, who has also voiced Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil, Dante in Devil May Cry, Minato Namikaze in Naruto, Isshin Kurosaki in Bleach, Julius Novachrono in Black Clover, Rei in Fist of the North Star, Paul Greyrat in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, and Kazuma Sohma in Fruits Basket.
Appearance[]
Hoshin was a tall, slender middle-aged man with a square jaw and golden eyes. His long, messy, dark red hair was symmetrical and tied into a downwards ponytail. He also sported a stubbly beard and moustache. Hoshin was typically seen wearing a baggy grey robe with a black hooded-cloak over the top, and black shoes. He tended to walk with a cane given to him by the Lion King, Falseil Lugunica.
Synopsis[]
Legacy[]
“ | In his era, Hoshin was someone who introduced revolutionary ways of thinking and ideas ahead of his time... He reshaped ideology, technology, culture—everything. | „ |
~ Otto Suwen, a merchant, describing Hoshin's profound affect on society. |
Alec Hoshin's deeds in life had a profound affect on the entire world. Known to history as "Hoshin of the Wastes," he became one of the most well known individuals to have ever lived. Kararagi, the nation he founded, went on to become one of the four great nations and the commercial capital of the entire world. Merchants across the world greatly revered Hoshin, some going as far as to give him the nickname "God of Commerce." Anecdotes of Hoshin's deeds and many of his quotes were frequently used as idioms. His defeat of Banan was used as an idiom to propose an ultimatum wherein an enemy could either yield or face total destruction.
His personal philosophies and the Japanese culture and architecture he introduced became integral to the cultural identity of Kararagi and Pristella. There were numerous territorial disputes over the years between Kararagi and Lugunica over ownership of Pristella, as Kararagi believed the fact that its founding father built Pristella entitled it to the city. Three hundred years after Hoshin's life, Kararagi and Lugunica went to war over their dispute. Pristella ultimately remained under Lugunican rule. One hundred years after the war, a prodigal businesswoman from Kararagi named Anastasia assumed the surname "Hoshin" in the founder's honor.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Intuitive Aptitude: Hoshin possessed a Divine Protection, a type of supernatural blessing bestowed on lucky individuals at birth by the world itself. In the case of evaluating an item he had never seen before however, he was unable to automatically ascertain its value or how it functioned.
