I must go to face my fate.
~ Hotsuma

Hotsuma (秀真) is the main protagonist in the 2002 videogame remake Shinobi, and this Shinobi is both the leader and last remaining ninja of the Oboro Clan.

Wielding Akujiki, a sword cursed to take the souls of those it slays, Hotsuma ventures into the demon-infested ruins of Tokyo and makes his way to the Golden Palace fight the sorcerer Hiruko Ubusana.

History

He wields Akujiki, a sword that belonged to the Oboro Clan's leaders and was passed down through the centuries. Hotsuma defeated his brother, Moritsune, in a duel to the death to find who would be the Oboro Clan's leader.

A year later, Hotsuma fought the demonic Hellspawn forces through the capital city of Tokyo in mordern-day Japan to investigate the death of his clan. Hotsuma allied himself with the girl named Kagari whose family is related to the malevolent sorcerer known as Hiruko Ubusuna. She was about to be sacrificed by her own revived ancestor to reanimate his living weapon known as Yatsurao but he fought it and won, only for Hiruko to absorb Yasturao's powers and being transformed into a young man with even more deadly powers.

He even battled his fellow Oboro clam member and childhood friend, kunoichi named Ageha who betrayed the the Oboro Clan and broken the seal in the Ubusuna shrine so she can use Hiruko's help in resurrecting Moritsune. She told Hotsuma the reason for that night was never for the leadership of the Oboro, but was to abate Akujiki's hunger as it happened when they were children and Moritsune was alive only to be scarred and cursed by Akujiki itself. She succeeded in reviving her dear love interest with Hiruko's help and yet the Moritsune she once knew was possessed by Aomizuchi who is one of the Hellspawn Lords and murdered her. It was part of Hiruko's plan. Hotsuma fought the Hellspawn Lord and freed both the tortured souls of both Moritsune and Ageha. In the end, he killed Hiruko and absorbed his soul into Akujiki.

Trivia

  • He is unlockable in the 2003 Shinobi game Nightshade as a playable character. Hotsuma wields the same weapons and plays the same as he did in Shinobi (2002).
  • Nightshade's protagonist Hibana's outfit is based off of Hotsuma's costume.
