Biography[]
Princess Peach and Toad arrive at Mario's house during a thunderstorm; the latter was happy to see them, but he soon becomes concerned when he noticed that they were looking distressed. Peach gives the strange letter to Mario and when he opens it, it was the form of a color drained Toad, which scares Mario. He sees the stamp and recognizes the Prisma Island symbol, and they decide to head there to investigate the ominous events. Huey is first seen after Mario, Peach, and Toad arrive at Prism Island only to find the town square, Port Prisma devoid of people and its famous fountain to be empty when it was supposed to be full of the six colors of the rainbow. During the investigation of these mysterious events, Mario activates the switch that brings Huey to the surface of the paintless fountain. Mario whacks him, which Huey is startled furious at him for waking him up rudely. They quickly apologize to him, and Huey understands the mishap and they each introduce themselves and Huey asks if they would like something to eat. They soon hear Toad screaming from the east side of town and they rush over to where he was and soon see him being attacked by a Slurp Guy (Shy Guy with a straw) who managed to fully drain him of his color and Toad falls lifelessly to the ground without a sound and Mario attacks the Slurp Guy, where Huey teaches him how to use Battle Cards to fight foes and has Mario squeeze him to paper form so he can paint the cards to get them working. After the battle, Huey lets Mario know that he can now use Paint Hammer to fill in colorless spots and restore Toad's lost color, much to the latter's gratitude.
At Cherry Lake, Huey will introduce the Cutout Ability to Mario in order to get through the gate at the beginning of the level. It also allows Mario to utilize the ability to use the Thing cards to solve puzzles, to cut out clear lines of the background in order to traverse areas if he isn't able to continue, to find hidden Battle Cards, and to use them for battle.
When helping the park ranger at Daffodil Peak repaint his cabin, Huey teaches Mario how to use the Unfurl Block which helps to unfurl the ranger's favorite chair.
Huey would also teach Mario how to use the Battle Spin when a Slurp Guy attacks them after a Card Connoisseur Toad borrows all of Mario's Battle Cards. It would let Mario to get extra cards for ten coins anytime he runs out. Huey will give Mario enough coins to use the Battle Spin until he bests the Slurp Guy.
At the Mustard Café, Huey is temporarily separated from Mario after the wind blows them into the giant whole that was repainted by the purple Big Paint Star, and during this time, Mario cannot use the Paint Hammer or the Cutout technique. He is eventually saved from the Green Pokey by Mario.
During the second half of the final battle with the black paint possessed Bowser, Huey returns to his 3-D form in order to absorb the black paint that Bowser uses to attack them, and Huey notes that it is very painful for him and he must defeat him quickly and if Mario takes too long to defeat Bowser, Huey will be knocked out, resulting in an instant Game Over. After absorbing the paint that infected Bowser, which in turn sets him free, Mario repaints Peach and they rush out of the black paint flooded castle and hop on Luigi's kart, but Huey refuses to leave with them due to the danger that an impending explosion of black paint from the castle would end up causing serious damage to anything it touches and after a tough good-bye, Huey managed to squeeze the entire castle into a card and absorbs the last of the black paint before he departs into deep space to dispose of it, relieved that he did not miss a drop. As everyone in Port Prisma were celebrating at a festival, Peach noticed Mario looking up at the stars and understands his sadness over Huey's absence and tells him that wherever he is, she feels that Huey is happy.
Should Mario achieve all of the Super Flags in Port Prisma, Huey can be seen falling back into Prisma Fountain where he was first discovered at the end of the staff credits.
