Hugo Le Baskerville is the Patriarch of the Baskerville Family and the father of Vikir Van Baskerville. He is known as one of the seven pillars supporting the Rok Empire. He holds the title of Marquis and has achieved the rank of Swordmaster, earning the moniker “Sword Star” for his role in unifying the fragmented territories of the continent into a single empire.
Appearance[]
Hugo is a broad-chested man with black hair and crimson eyes, exactly like Vikir. His hair grows longer as he ages, and he now wears a beard. Hugo's nose is scarred horizontally as a result of his confrontation with the Ballack Clan's commander.
Personality[]
His personality may be defined as vicious, hungry, resolute, and brutal, since he is prepared to kill his own family members to war in order to attain his own ambitions. He believes in the might makes right philosophy, which holds that the strong have the right to do anything they want to the weak, and hence prizes talent and ability over heredity. He sees significance in keeping facts secret from others since knowledge has its own type of strength.
Background[]
Hugo's life was defined by both significant accomplishments and personal tragedies. He married Roxana at a young age, a woman from poor background whose vibrant personality charmed him. They have a daughter named Penelope. Hugo apparently shown warmth and tenderness exclusively during this time because he adored Roxana and their kid. Hugo's demeanour altered dramatically when Penelope was kidnapped by the cannibalistic Rokoko tribe. After Roxana passed away, Hugo turned his sorrow into a fervent effort to eradicate the Black Mountain savages and monsters in order to extend the empire's boundaries.
Original Timeline[]
At one point in his life, the last member of a clan that had been wiped out by the Baskervilles spoke to Hugo. She had become a nun and therefore told Hugo that she forgave him for his actions. Hugo responded by saying that forgiveness is a just tool used by those too weak to get revenge.
When Vikir discovered one of the missing pages to "Lurking Embedded Teeth", Hugo sent him and other hounds on numerous missions in order to find the other pages, crushing anything on his way and nearly going to war with the other clans as a result. While all the pages were eventually collected, many hounds died in order to collect the missing pages. Hugo would use the information in these pages to eventually master the 9th Fang.
Abilities[]
Hugo is initially considered the strongest person in the Baskerville clan. By the time Vikir becomes 8 years old, Hugo was already a Sword Master capable of drawing out 7 fangs and by the time of Vikir's execution in the original timeline, he could draw out 9 fangs, though this was only possible after he got his hands on the book "Lurking Embedded Teeth" and it’s missing pages.
Family and Legacy[]
Hugo’s family lineage is complex and expansive. Besides Penelope, he has numerous children and heirs, most of whom he views as tools for furthering the clan’s legacy. He expects his offspring to embody the Baskerville ideals of strength, loyalty, and ruthless efficiency. Notably, his first son Osiris stands as his heir, showcasing the exceptional skill that Hugo values. Hugo’s relentless demand for excellence has fostered a cold and often unforgiving relationship with his descendants, particularly with his second son Seth, whose gentler nature contrasts with the harsh Baskerville ideals.
Leadership of the Baskerville Clan[]
Under Hugo’s leadership, the Baskerville Clan became a symbol of military prowess and discipline. He reorganized the clan’s forces, including the elite Pit Bull Knights and Mastiff Knights, strengthening their combat capabilities. His strict, almost militaristic approach extends to the Baskerville hounds, an elite guard force dedicated to protecting the family’s interests and fighting off enemies. Hugo's iron-willed leadership style ensures that loyalty and discipline are paramount, allowing him to maintain order within the clan’s complex structure.
Hugo’s Relationship with Vikir[]
Hugo shares a complicated bond with his grandson, Vikir, one of the Baskerville Clan's elite hounds. Despite his traditionally cold demeanor, Hugo’s attitude toward Vikir occasionally reveals hints of pride and fondness, a stark contrast to his typical treatment of other family members. This complexity is evident upon Vikir’s return, where Hugo, uncharacteristically warm, expresses subtle emotions that surprise even Vikir. His pride in Vikir’s achievements, however, does not preclude Hugo’s strict expectations for him, reflecting the unyielding demands he places on all family members.
Transformation into the Iron-Blooded Patriarch[]
Following the loss of his daughter, Hugo dedicated his life to warfare, earning the reputation of an "Iron-Blooded Swordmaster." This relentless pursuit led to his estrangement from family, even as he continued to produce heirs to carry on the Baskerville legacy. Hugo’s transformation from a family man to a war-driven patriarch symbolizes his commitment to the Baskerville values of sacrifice and strength. This shift solidified his status as a figure of both respect and fear within the clan and the empire.
Personality and Beliefs[]
Hugo’s stoic and often unyielding personality is defined by a utilitarian view of family. He values strength above all else and dismisses those he considers weak, including women and anyone who lacks martial ability. His worldview is rooted in a survivalist mentality shaped by decades of border warfare. However, glimpses of vulnerability surface, particularly when he is reminded of Penelope and his granddaughter, Pomeranian, whom he reluctantly acknowledges as his last link to the family he once cherished.
Impact on the Baskerville Legacy[]
Hugo Le Baskerville’s leadership and uncompromising ideals have cemented the Baskerville Clan as one of the most formidable noble houses within the Rok Empire. His personal sacrifices and relentless dedication to the clan's military and political power have made the Baskervilles a symbol of unbreakable resolve. Yet, his approach has also sown seeds of internal conflict, as some family members, like Seth and Vikir, occasionally clash with his hardened perspective. Despite this, Hugo’s influence on the Baskerville legacy remains profound, shaping the family’s future for generations.
