~ Brok's last words to Sindri, forgiving the latter for lying to him about his previous death. |
“ | Oh, but some of us were bigger fools than others, aren't we? I gave you everything: my skills, my friendship, my home, my secrets, my treasures... and you just kept taking! And now what have I got? Not even my family. You want "sorry"? This is what sorry looks like. (...) We? There is no "we". There's only you. No matter what the cost. So what you can do... is get the FUCK out of my sight. | „ |
~ Sindri lashing out to Atreus after Brok's death. |
Brok and Sindri, also known as the Huldra Brothers, are supporting characters in the 2018 video game God of War and major characters in its 2022 sequel God of War: Ragnarök. They are infamous dwarven blacksmiths who forged weapons such as Mjölnir, the Leviathan axe, and Surtr's sword. They are one of Kratos and Atreus' main companions.
In God of War (2018), the two were on bad terms with each other, but eventually, the two were able to repair their relationship and start working together again. In God of War: Ragnarök, Brok was killed by Odin (who disguised himself as Tyr) causing Sindri became dreaded and rageful. After Asgard's destruction and Brok's funeral, Sindri is nowhere to seen ever since because he is still in a bad mood. Kratos, Freya and Lunda take refuge in Sindri's house until he returns one day.
Brok is voiced by Robert Craighead, while Sindri is voiced by Adam Harrington. In the Japanese dub, Brok is voiced by Junichi Endo while Sindri is voiced by Tokuyoshi Kawashima.
Personalities[]
Brok[]
Although Brok is harmless, he is often rude, slovenly and ill-mannered. He frequently swears at Kratos and Atreus, even giving his beast (Huldra Creature) of burden the name "fucking gratitude". He also rivals his brother in forging skills. His personality is the opposite of his brother Sindri, who is polite and somewhat cowardly.
Despite his crude attitude, he is generally good-natured, and comes to care for Kratos and Atreus. He shows genuine concern when he learns of Atreus's sickness and assists him by imbuing Kratos' Blades of Chaos with the winds of Helheim. However, he is somewhat irritated when Atreus tries to get him and his brother back on good terms. Brok also finds Atreus's sentimental and "softy" attitude annoying at times. Despite this, he was grateful to the boy for getting him and his brother to work together again.
Brok does seem to have a particular interest in the works of foreign realms, as he immediately sensed Kratos's Blades of Chaos, saying he reeked of "foreign magick". He knew immediately that the blades were not from the Nine Realms and were something special, despite Kratos' reservations on using the blades, to begin with.
“ | Son. My brother and me created Mjolnir for the big idiot. | „ |
Like his brother, although not at the same extent, Brok expresses regret for forging Mjölnir for Thor, as the god used the weapon to slaughter the giants and commit other atrocities.
He hates the Aesir gods. He called Thor a big idiot and is surprised for Kratos killed Magni which he called him a loudmouth.
While he is obtuse and often unintentionally offensive to some people through his ignorance, he is also surprisingly perceptive; while everyone was fooled by Odin's disguise as Tyr, even Mimir and Freya who know Odin better than the others, Brok was able to notice mannerisms and decisions made by "Tyr" that he felt "all the pieces ain't welding together true," along with noting the strangeness in Tyr addressing Atreus by his Jotünn name; Brok's persistent pestering and questioning, perhaps plus Odin's recent losses including the death of Heimdall, enraged Odin enough that he broke the illusion to stab Brok.
On a journey with Kratos, Brok learns that he had once died and been revived by Sindri, which made him frustrated, but he never confronted his brother about his deception, until Odin fatally wounds him; Brok reveals he learned the truth and forgives Sindri for it, then pleas for his brother to accept it now and move on to live his life without baggage. Despite Brok being the most aggressive and provocative of the brothers, as he dies, he is the most gentle and compassionate.
Sindri[]
The near exact opposite to his brother Brok, Sindri is polite, well-meaning and erudite. He treats every piece of craft as an artwork that must be carefully handled, thus he pays close attention to detail and operates with precision.
However, Sindri is a very apprehensive person, can be extremely squeamish with anything that could be considered unclean. He exaggerates getting sick with handling any weapon that was recently used to kill. Even the mention of something repulsive, like Odin's request to make a craft to house Mimir's other eye and the venture into the World Serpent's stomach, caused Sindri to vomit.
Sindri is also more emotional than his brother, being visibly saddened upon learning of Faye's death and expressing visible frustration with his brother. He was also visibly hurt after Atreus mocked his complaints about his brother. Thankfully, Sindri didn't hold a grudge and was able to forgive the boy.
More so than Brok, Sindri also expresses regret for forging Mjölnir for Thor, as the god used it for evils such as genocide against the Jötnar. Such acts led them to create the Leviathan Axe, but also a rift between himself and his brother that eventually evolved into a feud.
“ | Though it best to vanish when Thor's idiot sons showed up. | „ |
~ Sindri when escaped from Magni and Modi. |
Like his brother, Sindri hates the Aesir Gods by calling Magni and Modi as Thor's idiot sons and Modi as a Dung Heap. He also called their weapons to be a cheap knockoffs from Thor's hammer.
However, after Brok's death at the hands of Odin, Sindri's personality changes drastically. He is turned into a depressed, vengeful, and devastated person. Sindri's attachment to Brok had already been implied to be irrational, as in their youth, an accident killed Brok, so Sindri defied the rules of nature to trespass into the Lake of Souls to - as he notes - "steal" his brother's soul back, albeit only successfully returning 75% of it, which was enough to revive him. A deceptive side of him was revealed as he never admitted what he had done, with Brok thinking his death was merely a blackout; Sindri did feel guilt about withholding the truth, but his cowardly nature prevented him from confessing.
Sindri's grief over Brok's death at the hands of Odin revealed or perhaps twisted him into an extremely spiteful, hateful, and petty person; while he aims his vengeance at Odin, he holds Kratos and Atreus responsible for allowing it to happen by challenging the Aesir All-Father, and despite their ignorance that Odin was masquerading as Tyr, Sindri blames the Greek descendants for giving the All-Father access to the dwarfs' secret home as if they knew. Before dying, Brok, plead with Sindri that he move on, however, Sindri refuses to do so. Sindri becomes hostile at any attempt to talk to him anymore, and when Atreus tries to offer sympathy, Sindri spitefully rejects it, reacting with envy and bitterness because Atreus hasn't suffered to a level he considers equal to his own grief.
He remains fearful of further loss, so fails to recruit any other dwarfs for the fight. However, unlike his usual cowardly nature, he remains fearless when personally navigating the battlefields of Ragnarök; though, he seems to be aware of his own weaknesses, thus disappears when he can't influence anything. After Atreus traps Odin's soul within a Jotünn metal marble, Kratos defers to Freya, who realises revenge won't make her whole anymore, thereby they were content to leave Odin trapped, however, Sindri materialised, snatched the marble from Atreus, then angrily shattering it with his hammer, thus killing Odin. Yet in spite of his vengeance being fulfilled, Sindri remained as angry and merciless as before; as Kratos, Atreus, and Freya attend Brok's funeral, it seemed implied that Sindri may still seek a grudge.
Abilities and Powers[]
Sindri and Brok are exceptionally skilled craftsmen and masters of magic, among the greatest of the Dwarves, having enchanted and created some of the most powerful weapons in all the Nine Realms, such as Mjölnir (Thor's hammer), Leviathan (Faye's later Kratos' Axe), Gungnir (Odin's spear), and the Draupnir Spear, being acknowledged by even Odin for their exceptional craftsmanship and hailed by Kratos as great blacksmiths. They are capable of improving and enhancing Kratos and Atreus weapons with the necessary materials, and can even work on and upgrade the Blades of Chaos despite their foreign magics. Sindri uses Dwarves' magic on a dragon's tooth to upgrade Atreus' bow.
Apart from creating weapons of war, they are also remarkably talented in creating other enchanted objects, though only Sindri openly exerts this talent. Sindri made the Sky Mover, an elevator to the top of the mountain, a key to access the locked parts of Tyr's temple, and their combined efforts even managed to come up with a magical device that could harness Mimir's Bifrost eyes to turn Mystical Gateways into portals through the Nine Realms capable of circumventing Odin's Realm Travel Block, a feat that not even a sorceress of Freya's caliber could perform.
While not active warriors, both Brok and Sindri are shown to be proficient in fighting if necessary, being capable of making use of improbable weapons and smithing tools to defeat enemies.
Quotes[]
“ | Kratos: Can you make it? Brok: Is it a weapon? Armor? or likewise an instrument of war of which I'm a master at shapin'? No? Then forget it. Even if I wanted to make such an insignificant gewgaw. I'm liable to chink my tools working on something so delicate and ladylike. Sindri: Then shingle it. Pattern weld the item with skap slag. Keep the layers thin, alternate the overlay. Brok: Okay, smart guy. And where d'ya propose to find a lump of quality skap slag? Last time I saw one, I could still get rigid down south. (Sindri shown Brok skap slag) Shut your mouth. Is that...? Where did you... Sindri: I had to get my hands dirty (gags) Brok: (laughter) Well, don't just stand there - let's do this. Sindri: What, you? You're fine with working on something that's not a weapon? Brok: Ah, hell... Why not? What? I can grow too... |

Trivia[]
- Brok turned blue due to touching metal without gloves or protection, according to Sindri.
- The true reason is that an accident at their forge killed Brok. Sindri went to the Lake of Souls in Alfheim to take back his brother, but could only steal three of the four parts of his soul, thus revived Brok in an incomplete form, which he himself wasn't aware of until the Lady of the Forge, a mermaid who communicates with a person's soul, was initially unable to commune with him.
- Both characters are similar to Hephaestus, the Greek God of blacksmithing.
- Brok and Sindri both knew that Faye was a giant, and knew that Atreus was half-Jotun.
