The Hunter is the titular main protagonist of the video game series, Monster Hunter. They are a nameless agent of the Hunters’ Guild that has dedicated their life to hunting down the monsters that threaten humanity, crafting gear out of their remains along the way.

As the Hunter for each game seems to be a different person, this page will serve as a hub to all the different incarnations of the Hunter.

Biography[]

Because of their extensive knowledge and greater ability for exercise than the average person, not many people are able to operate in this profession. The average height of a hunter is 175 cm. The majority of people pursue hunting for a variety of reasons, including fame, money, or a higher quality of life. Some even turn to hunting as a covert way to escape from crimes they have committed. Some areas disagree with the Hunter's Guild's methods since some hunters are or were criminals. Despite being almost universal, the Hunter's Guild is prohibited in some regions that disapprove of their practices. Not criticizing others for being an integral part of the organization is partly to blame for this. Hunting was first practiced by Wyverians hundreds of years ago. Although hunting was their main duty, it gradually evolved to include other tasks like escorting passengers and carrying goods. As a result, many of those requests with hunters eventually seemed to be fulfilled by the Hunter's Guild. Hunters are divided into three ranks: G-rank, High-rank, and Low-rank.

Powers and abilities[]

As a result of the rigorous training needed to become a monster hunter, the Hunter is not only physically powerful, but also a master martial artist and strategist. As such, they've been noted to be extraordinarily talented even when compared to other characters, being capable of besting even the most powerful monsters.

  • Superhuman physical attributes: The Hunter, like other hunters, is far more strong, durable and agile than the average human. They are able to not only wield colossal weapons such as the Great Sword and Hammer, which tend to be twice their size, but can do so for hours at a time without tiring. The Hunter is also virtually immortal, shrugging off falls from sheer cliffs and only fainting from the most powerful attacks, such as Alatreon's Escaton Judgement or Fatalis's Sea of Flames.
  • High intelligence: Keen and cunning, the Hunter possesses an incredible intellect. They are extremely versed in the habits of monsters and their physiologies, allowing them to expertly exploit these weaknesses in battle, such as luring two monsters into battle with each other or utilising the terrain itself as a trap. The Hunter is also skilled in crafting and can make numerous gadgets to help them in their battles from scratch, such as Flash Bombs or Luring Pods. As a Guild Hunter, the Hunter naturally possesses a high degree of understanding of the natural world around them, allowing them to effectively use endemic life such as Paratoads against the monsters they face.
  • Weapon expertise: As a hunter of monsters of all shapes and sizes, the Hunter must be well versed in the different ways that they can be taken down. As such, they are a master of all 14 weapon types found in game, allowing them to best whatever foe faces them.
    • Swordsmanship: The Hunter is skilled in not only wielding the more normal sized Sword and Shield, but also the outrageously large Great Sword. When using the former weapon, they are very swift and nimble, using their sword and shield to quickly land hits and block retaliating blows, while when using the latter, the hunter is able to swing the Great Sword hard enough to land devastating blows, whilst still being agile enough to dodge around attacks.
    • Bladesmanship: The Hunter is well versed in using blades in the form of the Long Sword, using them to land quick but decisive blows in an incredibly rapid succession. When sufficiently engaged in a battle, as indicated by their Spirit Gauge, the Hunter becomes incredibly fast, unleashing dozens of powerful slashes in the blink of an eye, though they will eventually exhaust themselves and have to recover.
    • Knifemanship: The Hunter is a master of the Dual Blades, which they use to hack and chop away at monsters, even spinning down the backs of lengthier creatures to rend them to pieces. In the heat of battle, they can enter the Demon Mode, becoming even more fast, agile and strong in exchange for draining their stamina at an increased rate.
    • Bludgeon mastery: The Hunter is adept at using bludgeoning weapons such as the Hammer and Hunting Horn. When using the former, they are able to counteract their sluggishness with the weapon's momentum, using powerful swings to deflect blows or send themselves flying right into the monster's face.
    • Musical expertise: By using the Hunting Horn, the Hunter can produce powerful shockwaves of sound that not only deal damage to their target, but can also be strung into songs if played in the right order. This allows the Hunter to quickly tip the scales of battle to their favour, stacking all sorts of buffs on themselves or dealing additional damage to the monster.
    • Lance mastery: The Hunter is highly skilled with the Lance and Gunlance, being able to utilise these weapons' hefty defences and long reach to deflect most hits from monsters. They can also make full use of the Gunlance's explosive arsenal, setting off blasts, firing destructive Wyrmstakes into their target's flesh, and on occasion unleashing devastating blasts of Wyvern's Fire. Even these weapons' shields are powerful tools in the Hunter's hands, allowing them to perform powerful charges or parry attacks from monsters, sending them reeling.
    • Bōjutsu mastery: The Hunter can utilise the Insect Glaive in a manner similar to real world Bōjutsu, attacking monsters with rapid strikes and slashes of the glaive. They can even launch themselves into the air to unleash dizzying aerial assaults or just dodge right above the attacks of a monster.
    • Bowmanship: The Hunter is very skilled with the Bow, being able to fire volleys of arrows with incredible accuracy. Using their array of tinctures and dipping potions, they can endow their arrows with different effects and even launch explosive seeking arrows. In a pinch, the Hunter can use their Bow to bash monsters, though this attack is much less effective than using regular arrows.
    • Marksmanship: The Hunter is an expert marksman, being capable of using both the Light Bowgun and Heavy Bowgun with ease to fire bullets into monsters, be it rapid rounds of small bullets or devastatingly explosive ammo. Just like the Bow, they can craft special ammunition that have certain effects, allowing the Hunter to tip battles to their favour.
  • Animal companionship: The Hunter is exceptionally charismatic and skilled at working with animal assistants. They are noted to be a natural at riding the Canyne and Seikret, being able to command them in battle or to assist them in their respective games. The Fierce Flame of Kamura is also an expert at utilising the Wirebugs, calling on them to use their durable silk threads which allow for the execution of game-changing manoeuvres.
