The Goddess Hylia is one of the overarching protagonists (alongside the Golden Goddesses) of The Legend of Zelda franchise.
She is the goddess worshipped by the Hylians, serving as their guardian and the creator of Skyloft. Engaged in an eternal war with her archenemy, the Demon King Demise, Hylia reincarnates as a human girl named Zelda to recruit Link, her chosen hero.
Biography[]
Skyward Sword[]
When the Golden Goddesses created the land that would become Hyrule, they also created an omnipotent wish granting object known as the Triforce that they left in the protection of Hylia. One day, a massive fissure opened in the Earth, from which the Demon King Demise and the Demon Tribe emerged. The Goddess Hylia fought to defend the land from the Demon King Demise who sought to conquer it using the Triforce. Hylia rose portions of the land into the Sky to protect the land's inhabitants and Triforce. With the Triforce and her people safe, she and the remaining inhabitants of the surface managed to defeat and seal Demise away at the Sealed Grounds. However, casting the seal left her too weakened to maintain it, so she devised a plan to ensure Demise's destruction.
Hylia created Fi and the Goddess Sword to one day serve a hero on their quest to empower the blade and find the Triforce. She then would reincarnate herself as a mortal and bathe in sacred waters to reawaken memories of her past life and powers before using the Gate of Time to return to the moment after Demise was sealed away. Her mortal incarnation would remain in the past to maintain the seal long enough for her chosen hero to use the Triforce's power to destroy Demise once and for all.
Although Hylia's plan would eventually succeed, Demise's servant Ghirahim was able to use the Gate of Time to revive his master in the past. But the chosen hero Link would defeat them both and save the land from disaster.
Post-Sky Era[]
In honor of her selfless actions that saved the world from being overtaken by evil, the Hylian race would establish the Kingdom of Hyrule on the now demon-free surface named after her. Lake Hylia would also be named after her.
Downfall Timeline[]
Echoes of Wisdom[]
Hylia has long since faded into myth in the Downfall Timeline. However, a statue of her can be found in the basement of Hyrule Castle, which Princess Zelda hides behind while changing clothes, alluding to their connection.
Era of the Wilds[]
Breath of the Wild[]
