Ian Chesterton was Coal Hill School's science teacher, who along with his fellow teacher Barbara, became The Doctor's first human companions.
He was one of the two main tritagonists (alongside Barbara Wright) of Season 1 and one of the main deuteragonists of Season 2 of the Classic Series of Doctor Who and a minor character in the 2022 Specials, apart of the Thirteenth Doctor Era of the revival series.
He was portrayed by the late William Russell, who also played Hamlet and Sir Lancelot in The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, who played Ian on TV, and would reprise it for Big Finish. Ian was also voiced by Jamie Glover in Big Finish's First Doctor Adventures.
History[]
Ian Chesterton found that one of his pupils, Susan Foreman, was unusually knowledgeable in science. He and Barbara, who had also noticed Susan's strange knowledge, decided to follow her back to her home to solve the mystery. They followed her back to 76 Totter's Lane, a junkyard. Searching the junkyard, Ian found a police box, with a strange vibration, almost as if it was alive. There, they encountered Susan's grandfather, known as the Doctor, who was quite brusque with them. Ian and Barbara started to hear Susan in the police box and forced themselves into the box, and found it was bigger on the inside. After explaining that it was a time machine called a TARDIS, Ian and the others found themselves travelling back in time.
2022[]
Ian was tracked down by Graham O'Brian to be part of the Companion Support Group for those who had ended their travels with the Doctor but had no way to share their wonders experiences and memories. Ian expressed surprise when he learned that the Doctor had regenerated into a woman.
Trivia[]
- Ian took part in a companion support group in 2022. This was amazing in that William Russel broke the world record for largest gap between televised appearances. Its equally impressive as William was suffering dementia.
- This ironically made him the grandfather character the First Doctor was; adding to this fact is that Hartnel was having trouble remembering the script and accidentally adlibbing in his later seasons.
