“ | Dear me, dear me... I tell you not to say my name, and you say it again. I send you to go and cool your head, and you come right back. Though you may have a few years under your belt, you're still a proper cheeky little brat, aren't you? If you can't do as you're told, I suppose there's nothing else for it. I'll just kill you. | „ |

“ | Dear me. You don't seem to appreciate others' kindness. It was for the sake of protecting your dignity that I went to the trouble of halving your strength. If I were to strike you down at your full potential, how could your precious Quincy underlings ever respect you again?! Though of course, I suppose you don't need any dignity when you're dead! | „ |

Ichibei Hyōsube (兵 主 部 一 兵衛, Hyôsube Ichibei) is a major character of the manga/anime series, Bleach. He is a member of the Royal Guard and is often looked upon as the leader of these. He bears the title of Monk of the Eyeball or Monk of Perception and is the one who gave the name of everything in Soul Society, including Zanpakutō.
He is voiced by Naomi Kusumi in the Japanese version of the anime and by Aaron LaPlante in the English version.
Personality[]
Ichibei is an authoritative Shinigami who remains focused on the mission at hand. He speaks loudly and frankly and his face is expressive. In addition, he hits Tenjirô without him flinching, which proves his hierarchical superiority. Despite these facts, he remains a fairly friendly and smiling person with, at times, a little slow air.
Synopsis[]
Thousand Year Blood War Arc[]
After the death of Captain General Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, Ichibei uses the Tenchūren to travel to Soul Society along with the other members of the Royal Guard. There they are greeted by most of the Gotei 13 survivors and Ichigo Kurosaki. After a discussion of the unit with the captains of Gotei 13, Ichibei tells them that they can discuss later.
Shunsui Kyoraku asks why they moved, to which Ichibei replies: " We intend to rebuild Soul Society, but first we need to see Ichigo Kurosaki ." After initially ignoring Captain Soi Fong's interruption, he hits Tenjirô Kirinji who had made an arm lock to the Captain of the Second Division and reminded him of the difference between their respective roles. Ichibei insists that such trivialities can wait.
Senjumaru Shutara then appears with several seriously injured Shinigami in transport orbs. While the others argued, she had walked the necessary distance to the Fourth and Twelfth Division quarters to bring back the bodies of Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai, but also the broken Bankai of Ichigo Kurosaki. Ichigo wonders why they are going to be taken too, Ichibei replies that they are all going to be treated (Kirinji points out the fact that Unohana is unable to heal them too), but that the reason why Ichigo is taken is different. Indeed, members of the Royal Guard would have the means to repair his broken Bankai, which is not normally possible.
The return to the royal dimension will be at the house of Kūkaku Shiba , via his famous cannon which will project the Tenchūren towards the Royal Palace. Once at the palace, Ichigo wonders if it is not necessary to the Ôken that Aizen was trying to create to pass ... Ichibei and Shutara explain to him that the Ôken is implanted in their bones and that what Aizen Sosuke was trying to create were "artificial members of the Royal Guard" in a way, the latter believes that Aizen is the embodiment of Evil. After that, Ichigo will go from plateau to plateau in order to undergo a training made in Division 0 .
We will only see Ichibei again during a Flashback when he will train Renji and Rukia and he first learns the full name of his Bankai, revealing in passing his primary function. We can assume that it is he who will also allow Rukia to acquire his Bankai.
Abilities[]
His Zanpakuto is Ichimonji, a giant brush with the power to cut words, essentially cutting anything into its base half (cutting an "arm" reduces it into an "ar", leaving it with only half of its strength). When Ichibē activates the Shikai, the tip turns into a blade that scatter black ink, erasing the names of whatever the ink stains.
- He refers to Bankai as Shinuchi, citing that as the original word before Bankai replaced it, and his is called Shirafude Ichimonji. It is a giant white brush with the power to rename targets that have been affected by the Shikai. Targets renamed as a black ant, for example, will only have the abilities of a black ant. Ichimonji is also able to control black to launch very powerful attacks.
Trivia[]
- During his fight with Yhwach, it's shown Ichibei can use his Shikai to make someone forget the name they have given an object, but not what said object is.
- Yhwach remembered what a sword was but not it's name.
- His Bankai can be undone by The Almighty, as Yhwach is the son of the Soul King; the one being whom Ichibei is weaker than.
- Despite coming off as nice, his smile belays an evil side to him; he even starts slasher smiling the more angry Yhwach makes him by using his real name. Ichibei REALLY hates having his name spoken.
