Igneel the Fire Dragon is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Mavis Vermillion) of the Fairy Tail franchise. He was the adoptive father of Natsu Dragneel and the biological father of the Fire Dragon God, Ignia.
He was known as the "Fire Dragon King" and was good friends with Natsu's older brother, Zeref Dragneel. Igneel was among the five Dragons who had their soul's taken by the self proclaimed Dragon King, Acnologia and was later killed by him.
He is voiced by Hidekatsu Shibata in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Bob Magruder and Jim White in the English version.
Appearance[]
Igneel is a gigantic Dragon whose bodily majority is covered with dark, red scales. Igneel's lower body, specifically his belly, the inner portions of his long tail, and legs, is beige in color. Igneel also has noticeable scars on his belly and neck, with the largest one, which is X-shaped, located around the center of his body. His back has numerous black spikes, reaching down from the back to the end of his tail. Igneel has a triangular head with horns, a pair of large, round eyes with yellow sclera (which are usually seen as glowing, obscuring his dark, round pupils) and a sharp horn pointing upwards just above his nose. Igneel also sports very sharp canine teeth, and has claws with long, sharp, red nails. Igneel's large bony wings resemble a bat's, with rippled tips. Additionally, Igneel has four hind legs.

Igneel has been shown to be a loving father figure towards Natsu, before his untimely departure. Despite leaving Natsu, Igneel, however, is shown to be incredibly protective of Natsu, and watches him from afar. Contrary to his quite often portrayed loving personality, Igneel can also be rash, angry and violent when he feels the situation calls for it. He has also shown a high degree of arrogance, referring to himself as "the one and only Igneel" during Grandeeney's visit. According to Grandeeney, like Natsu, Igneel has a tendency to take things to the excess.
Synopsis[]
Igneel, also known as the Flame Dragon King, dueled with his close friend Atlas Flame several times, usually arising atop and consuming the flame clad Dragon's flames. Sometime during the Dragon King Festival, Igneel and an unknown female dragon had a son named Ignia who later became one of the Five Dragon Gods. At some point, Igneel like many other dragons had his soul damaged by Acnologia's dragon slayer magic which left him weakened and slowly dying.
Four hundred years ago, Igneel was in the woods, where he encountered Zeref Dragneel. Being the benevolent dragon, Igneel and Zeref became friends with the two often discussing Zeref's young brother, Natsu Dragneel. Eventually, Igneel offered to raise Natsu himself and teach him his signature Lost Dragon Slayer Magic: Fire Dragon Slayer Magic. Zeref allowed this and with Natsu as his ward, Igneel taught Natsu dragon slayer magic which gave Natsu the traits of Igneel himself. Igneel was aware of Natsu being the E.N.D., the most powerful Demon of Books of Zeref but chose not to kill him due to loving him like his own son.
It was later revealed Igneel and his fellow benevolent dragons would concoct a plan to use the Dragon Soul Seal to hide themselves in the bodies of their children in order to use the Eclipse Gate to travel to the future. They did this to absorb etherano to have the strength to stand against Acnologia.
For the majority of the series, Igneel was simply Natsu's father figure and major motivation for adventuring in Fairy Tail, the values he instilled in Natsu forming the basis upon which the guild built up. As more information was revealed, he quickly started becoming Acnologia's counterpart, especially with the revelation that he was the leader of the Dragon Slayer's Dragon parents, the one who planned their strategy to both protect their adoptive children and face the Dragon King, and by far the strongest creature on their side of the conflict. Zirconis strongly implies that he was the dragon who started the Dragon King Festival to protect humanity. However, it would not be until the Tartaros arc that Igneel would finally be forced to make his reappearance, and indeed have most of the information on what he was doing behind the scenes revealed post-death.
Eventually, he takes the active role by the time the Tartaros arc rolls around when he finally comes out of hiding to battle Acnologia. It doesn't last for long before the Dragon King kills him.

Fire Dragon Slayer Magic- Igneel specialized in Dragon Slayer Magic that resolves around Fire. He taught this Magic to Natsu. Igneel used this Magic for melee purposes using the Fire he generates to increase the power of his strikes. Compared to Natsu, Igneel's prowess and power is far greater to the point that he is capable of matching Acnologia's Dragon Form's Dragon Slaying magic.
Fire Dragon Roar- Like all Dragons and Dragon Slayers, Igneel is shown using his element in a very powerful breath attack. The attack is a large scale destructive fire breath that can destroy the surrounding area.
Fire Dragon Iron Fist- Igneel hits his enemy with a large Fire Fist, This attack is powerful enough to send the Dragon King Acnologia flying.
Fire Dragon Claw- Igneel ignites his feet in flames, increasing the power of his kick.
Telepathy- Igneel is able to use this form of Magic, allowing him to communicate with Humans telepathically.
Dragon Soul Technique- Igneel used this ability to conceal his soul inside his foster child Natsu Dragneel.
Flight- Being a Dragon, Igneel has 2 large wings. He can use them to fly.
Immense Strength- Igneel held enough Physical strength to fight on par with the Dragon King Acnologia and even briefly overwhelm him, despite Igneel only having a little bit of strength from when he was alive, although it must be noted that Acnologia was also holding back and eventually Igneel, having fought the Dragon King while in such a griveous state that he waa described as being in the brink of death by Metalicana, was ultimately overpowered and killed.
Immense Durability- Igneel has shown to hold tremondous levels of durabillity, as he able to emerge from a full scale fight with Acnologia with only minor bruises and cuts while the latter sustained severe injuries. However his durability did not last long which ultimately resulted in his downfall.
