CURSE YOU, BAYLE! I hereby vow! You will rue this day! Behold, a true Drake Warrior! And I, Igon! Your fears made flesh! Solid of scale you might be, foul dragon... But I will riddle with holes your rotten hide! With a hail of harpoons! With every last drop of my being!
~ Igon's most famous quote.

Igon is a supporting character in the 2024 dark fantasy action RPG Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. He is voiced by Richard Lintern.

Biography[]

Very little is known of Igon’s life prior to his becoming a Drake Warrior, other than that he was a lowly scavenger that collected equipment off the bodies of slain warriors. At some point, he joined the ranks of the Drake Warriors, under the Dragon Communion Priestess Florissax, which gave him a sense of purpose. He hunted Bayle the Dread’s progeny with great zeal,  successfully killing several drakes and devouring their hearts. Presumably using the bones and sinews of his quarry, he crafted a gigantic greatbow, as well as his own special harpoons. With his newfound strength, he attempted to do what countless others had failed to accomplish, and went to face Bayle the Dread alone. The battle resulted in Igon losing his left leg, suffering paralysis in his right leg and left arm, and likely many other lesser injuries. These, however, paled in comparison to the psychological damage his defeat inflicted, with the pain of his injuries driving him to insanity.

By the time the Tarnished meets him at Gravesite Plain, he is found far from the Jagged Peak (the location of Bayle's roost), lamenting his broken body and swearing vengeance upon Bayle in a blind rage, before finally begging the dragon for mercy. He is seemingly unaware of the Tarnished’s presence, but this encounter prompts him to begin his trek to the Peak, crafting new harpoons for his greatbow along the way.  He is encountered in the form of a message stone in the foothills of the Jagged Peak, and later in his physical form closer to the mountain’s base. He can be found laughing maniacally and applauding the Tarnished's combat prowess, after witnessing the latter successfully defeat two drakes simultaneously. After lauding the Tarnished as a Drake Warrior and a dear friend, he asks that they take his severed finger and use it to summon him in their battle against Bayle. He admits the brokenness of his body and his utter fear of Bayle, but assures the Tarnished that his spirit is willing to fight alongside them. Following this conversation, he seemingly falls unconscious, exhausted from the effort of dragging himself up the side of the mountain.

Should the Tarnished choose to summon him in the battle, he will appear in a spirit form with his limbs intact, armed with his greatbow, harpoons and Dragon Communion abilities. He curses Bayle in a wrathful monologue, and assists the Tarnished in killing him, often helping to draw Bayle's attention using his ranged attacks.

Should he die during the battle in spite of his immense durability, he will swear that Bayle will one day know fear with his last breath. If he and the Tarnished successfully kill Bayle, he will let out a war cry and break down sobbing, saying that Bayle will haunt him no longer. At this point, his spirit disappears and he dies, finally able to rest in peace with his arch nemesis slain. His armor set,  bow and Bell Bearing(granting access to his harpoons) can be collected by the Tarnished from his body.

Personality[]

Though the player never meets him prior to his battle with Bayle, Igon is described as reckless and headstrong by Florissax, who remarks that he is the perfect model of a Drake Warrior, as Dragonlord Placidusax envisioned. Following his defeat, he is both a traumatized husk, constantly tormented by his wounds and his fear of Bayle, and a raving lunatic, so bent upon taking his revenge that he drags himself to the Jagged Peak with his one functioning limb, seemingly intending on facing Bayle in that state. When he is later encountered at the mountain itself, he has somewhat regained his sanity, and humbly asks the Tarnished's help. He shows great camaraderie towards the Tarnished, showing he likely held great respect toward his former comrades in his old days. He also exhibits immense willpower, as even in his more lucid state, he is willing to overcome his terror and try to take his revenge. His broken body and endless rage also lead Florissax to remark on his similarity to Bayle.

Trivia[]

  • Igon, particularly in his relationship to his arch nemesis, Bayle the Dread, is clearly inspired by the character of Captain Ahab from the 1851 epic novel Moby Dick, by Herman Melville. They both recklessly face an immensely strong foe alone, only to be crippled and driven mad, prompting a quest for vengeance.
  • Igon quickly became a fan favorite NPC despite his limited screen presence, on account of his long and impassioned monologues and the performance by his voice actor, Richard Lintern.
  • He is one of two living Drake Warriors encountered in Elden Ring, the other being Violet Bloody Finger Therolina, who entered the service of Mohg after becoming a Drake Knight.
