History[]
Background[]
On Earth-838, the sorcerer Doctor Strange decided to create a team of powerful individuals to protect Earth from threats, and chose to be its leader to make difficult decisions that others couldn't. The team consisted of the telepathic mutant Charles Xavier, the enhanced Avenger Captain Carter, the elastic scientist Reed Richards, the king of the Inhumans Black Bolt, and the cosmic superhero Maria Rambeau. With the formation of the team, they became allies with both Carter and Richards' teams, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
When Thanos started his quest to find the infinity stones, the Illuminati worked together to stop the Mad Titan before he erase half of the universe. However, Strange decided to act alone and use the power of the Darkhold to find a solution to stop Thanos, learning how other universes stopped him by dreamwalking into his variants. Tragically, Strange's actions resulted in an incursion that caused the destruction of the alternate universe, but Thanos was defeated by his teammates when they obtained the Book of Vishanti. The sorcerer supreme ultimately confessed his actions to the team, whom decided to execute him for causing an incursion. Following the incident, Karl Mordo replace Strange as a member and the group lied to the public of the sorcerer's death since the Earth needed heroes.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness[]
When Doctor Strange and America Chavez of the mainstream universe arrived on Earth-838, they were captured by Mordo and taken to the Illuminati's headquarters. Strange was brought to the team and attempted to warm them of Scarlet Witch, who was using the power of the Darkhold in an attempt to bring back her children following the Westview incident, but they ignored him since they were aware of her. During the meeting, the Illuminati's headquarters were breached by Maximoff, having used dreamwalking to take over her Earth-838 counterpart to find Chavez. Mr. Fantastic, Captain Carter, Black Bolt and Captain Marvel decided to confront Wanda while Professor X continued to speak with Strange. Despite the power of the Illuminati, they were ultimately killed by Maximoff as Strange escaped by tricking Mordo into freeing him.
Following the battle, Mordo remained the sole survivor of the team, resulting in the team being disbanded. Doctor Strange and Earth-838 Christine Palmer worked together to stop Maximoff, whom redeemed herself by destroying the Darkhold, thus avenging the deaths of the fallen Illuminati members.
