Independent State Allied Forces, abbreviated as ISAF, is an organization featured in the Ace Combat video game series, serving as the main heroic faction of Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, and a minor heroic faction in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. They are a military alliance created to counter Erusea's threat to peace and stability on the continent of Usea, and were the nation's main opponent during the Continental War.
History[]
Shattered Skies[]
In 2003 Erusea invaded and occupied the nation of San Salvacion, taking control of the Stonehenge railgun complex housed there. The Federation of Central Usea president Robert Sinclair responded by announcing the creation of the ISAF alliance later that year. The coalition was comprised of sixteen Usean nations, including the FCU.
Despite their combined military power, the united nations proved no match for Stonehenge, and Erusea quickly took over most of the Usean continent, forcing the ISAF leadership to retreat to North Point. A lone ISAF pilot, Mobius 1, covered their retreat. This allowed ISAF to regroup and launch a number of counterattacks against Erusean forces, culminating in the battle over Comona Islands, in which they ended up victorious. This allowed them to launch a counteroffensive and retake most of the continent, with Mobius 1 even managing to destroy Stonehenge. At last, ISAF forces pushed into Erusean territory, capturing the nation's capital of Farbanti and winning the war.
In spite of Erusea's defeat, a group of officers from its military escaped and took control of the Megalith, a superweapon designed to shoot down fragments of the Ulysses asteroid from the Earth's orbit. To prevent them from causing mass civillian casualties, ISAF deployed Mobius 1 and his Mobius Squadron one last time. They succeeded in destroying the Megalith, finally allowing peace to return to the continent.
The Unsung War[]
In 2006 an organization calling itself "Free Erusea" emerged, attacking multiple locations across Usea. After the Continental War, ISAF's performance analysis of Mobius 1 determined his ability alone was equivalent to an entire squadron of ISAF fighters.
Therefore, in response to the uprising of Erusean holdouts, ISAF launched "Operation Katina" and tasked Mobius 1 and AWACS SkyEye with curbing the insurgency. The pilot and the AWACS were successful in their mission, and peace returned to Usea once more.
Post-Operation Katina[]
The Independent States Allied Forces were eventually disbanded at some point prior to 2014, with some of its units reintegrated into the IUN peacekeeping forces.

Trivia[]
- The organization shares its acronym with the International Security Assistance Force, a NATO-led mission during the War in Afghanistan. Since Ace Combat 04 was released months before the real-life ISAF's establishment, this is only a coincidence.
