Ion is the embodiment of Willpower within the Emotional Spectrum, serving as the living source of the Green Light that powers the Green Lantern Corps. Ion embodies positive willpower without fear, granting its host immense power far beyond that of a typical Green Lantern, enabling them to overcome cosmic threats and bring order to the universe.

Ion is not only a source of power but also a symbol of pure will, untainted by fear, rage, or despair. It has bonded with various hosts, most notably Kyle Rayner and later Sodam Yat, amplifying their abilities to godlike levels during their tenure as Ion.

Once thought to be merely an honorary title in the Green Lantern Corps, Ion is in fact the symbiotic willpower entity birthed from the green of the Emotional Spectrum. Its existence was kept a secret from the Green Lantern Corps since their inception, and it resided in the central power battery to keep Parallax in check. Only after the destruction of the Central Power Battery were both Ion and Parallax set free. Ion wandered the cosmos for a time, and eventually was reined in by what was then the only surviving Green Lantern ring, that of Kyle Rayner. Kyle Rayner served as its host briefly, and noted that his powerbase was so greatly expanded, he didn't need a power battery or power ring to manifest the emerald energy.

Unlike Parallax, Ion does not influence the user's actions.

Biography[]

Background[]

Ion was born at the dawn of sentience when the first creatures in the universe willed themselves to continue living, giving birth to the Willpower Entity within the Emotional Spectrum. It is depicted as a massive, whale-like energy being, representing the limitless potential of willpower unclouded by fear.

Initially, Kyle Rayner became Ion by absorbing the power of the Central Power Battery, taking on the mantle of the universe’s protector with nearly limitless will-based energy. Later, Ion was revealed as a separate entity that would choose hosts, bonding with Sodam Yat, a Daxamite Green Lantern, to serve as the Corps’ living weapon during the Sinestro Corps War and beyond.

Ion plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the Emotional Spectrum, representing the source of the Green Lantern Corps’ power and the concept of fearless will. During the Sinestro Corps War, Ion’s power was key in the conflict, with Sodam Yat wielding it against the Sinestro Corps and Superboy-Prime.

As the living embodiment of willpower, Ion ensures the Green Lantern Corps remains a force of order and justice across the universe, able to counteract other entities like Parallax (Fear) and The Butcher (Rage), maintaining balance within the spectrum.

Personality and Philosophy[]

Unlike Parallax, which corrupts and feeds on fear, Ion seeks to empower and uplift, aligning with the Green Lantern Corps’ mission to inspire courage and maintain order across the universe.

Powers and Abilities[]

As the embodiment of willpower, Ion grants its host:

  • Limitless Willpower Manipulation: Full access to the Green Light of Will without fear, allowing for limitless construct creation.

  • Flight: Interstellar and interdimensional travel.
  • Enhanced Physical Abilities: Super strength, speed, and durability beyond any standard Lantern.
