Iris Fang is the main supporting protagonist of the Rizzoli & Isles novel "The Silent Girl". Iris is a Taiwanese wushu artist and the grieving mother and widow of murder victims Laura and James Fang, her daughter and husband. She works with her star pupils, family friend Bella Li and police detective Johnny Tam, to secure vigilante justice against the killers.

Biography[]

Iris's daughter Laura was abducted, raped, and murdered by serial killers Patrick Dion and Mark Mallory, never to be seen again. Dion's daughter and Mallory's stepsister Charlotte, who was repeatedly raped by Dion for years, went to her mother Dina and Dina's husband Arthur when she found Laura's custom golden dragon pendant in Dion's car, Dina and Arthur hoping to take the information up with James to confirm their worst fears. Mallory was there and tipped Dion off, so the two of them killed the three parents and the two other witnesses they could find, mob affiliate Joey Gilmore and Chinese-born restaurant cook Wu Weimin, by shooting to silence them all. Wu was framed for the crime due to his undocumented status, but his daughter, Mei Mei "Bella" Li, was the only survivor and witnessed everything. As her mother was also undocumented and the killers could murder her as well, Iris made her swear to silence to protect her, as she was a friend of the Wus.

Iris collected Bella from California, where she was living at the time and where Iris saved her from an attempted gang-rape. She insisted on teaching Bella how to fight life her with all Iris could teach, as they intended to find the killers and get justice for themselves. Detective Tam would be their inside man into the Boston PD, crafting a mask to become an imitation of "The Monkey King", a Chinese anti-hero from epics who always fought for justice no matter how flawed his means. He was armed with Zheng Fi, Iris' family's Damascus steel sword forged over centuries of their history. Iris also sent obituaries for the victims to their families, except for Gilmore, whose obits were also sent to mob boss Kevin Donohue, with notes demanding answers for the truth; even after hid death, Iris was Wu's strongest supporter and defended his innocence the whole time, but Dion and Mallory. Charlotte, in the meantime, had escaped to Maine shortly after the massacre and changed her name to Susan, but years later, she saw a personal ad Iris released demanding answers and wanted to come forward. She called the lead investigator, Detective Lou Ingersoll, reporting her accounts of all she knew and imploring her to meet him alone in Maine to give her testimony.

Dion and Mallory were finally set off by the reopened investigations and fresh new evidence, fearing the chance they'd finally be caught. When they bugged Ingersoll's house to tap his lines for what information they knew, they heard enough to solicit two high-rate contract killers to murder all the witnesses. The killer successful murdered Ingersoll, but with Tam armed with Zheng Fi, they never got to Iris and Bella, as Tam slashed them both dead. Iris was questioned by the detectives when the assassin's car was found and had her dojo in its GPS. She denied an understanding of what was happening, but she was honest about the murder of James, while withholding the disappearance of Laura to leave the police to figure it out. Detective Barry Frost bonded most with her, as he was compassionate to witnesses and survivors, elders being no exception, and he commiserated with Iris particularly from having once dated a Chinese-American woman and understanding the dynamics of her family and history. Iris additionally showed Frost what she said was Zheng Fi, but was really a decoy to cover up her involvement, believing Frost wouldn't suspect the truth. She underestimated him after a family photo of the Fangs was impaled to her pillow by Dion and Mallory with a kitchen knife, Frost understanding there was more she wasn't telling.

Iris, in the meantime, coordinated with Tam while he fought the contract killers and tracked Dion and Mallory, as well as Bella when she was sent to survey the police's progress where Tam couldn't. When Frost realized what sort of sword was used to kill the assassins, they all interrogated Iris again, in the presence of Dr. Calvin Cherry, a weapons curator for the Harvard Arts Museum. She was ordered to turn over Zheng Fi, even though she gave the decoy, Dr. Cherry promising the utmost care while marveling the blade. By that point, Dion and Mallory finally made their move to get Iris, who failed to get to Zheng Fi in time. They abducted her and held her captive at their mountain estate to interrogate her, threatening her with Zheng Fi for answers on who the witness was, in exchange for telling her where her daughter was. She didn't budge in spite of her grief, but she realized Dion and Mallory killed other girls from their choice words suggesting it. Detective Jane Rizzoli was soon held captive with her after she went back to Dion's mansion and he drugged her. Iris made her get the keys to their chains and cell best she could, but she left Rizzoli behind, as Bella and Tam followed her with a tracker she kept on her person. Dion and Mallory were no match, as Dion was shot, and Mallory, too distracted by Tam in his mask, was shot by Rizzoli. Iris was shot and severely wounded, but with medical assistance, she pulled through. Tam was promoted fully to detective with Rizzoli's recommendation, and the trio met in China to burn the mask to put the past behind them.
