After Zuko discover that Aang is finally released from an iceberg, Iroh refused to believe what he heard and dismissed it as celestial glimmers in the winter sky. He tried to tell Zuko how it's impossible to get his hopes up to get his father's attention and a position as a heir of the Fire Nation, but his nephew refused to believe and said that capturing the Avatar was his destiny.

Outside the ship, he was seen listening to Zuko's speech about the Fire Nation's decisions of capturing the Avatar and watching him training to match against the Avatar where he tried to offer him a cup of jasmine tea. Later, when Aang was captured and imprisoned at the ship, Iroh went to visit him and explained about what the Fire Nation did before told him he'll sent some jasmine tea for him and leaves.

While an angry Zuko desperately find his missing notebook that was stolen by Aang, Iroh later calmed him down by showing him the map that tracks down the Avatar's movement. He and Zuko went to the Fire Nation port to report Zhao about the Avatar, but the Fire Nation prince thinks it's a bad idea. Later that night, they asked the Fire Nation officer for the surveillance reports and a map and meets Commander Zhao for the first time. The next morning, he and Iroh noticed Zhao and his men are heading to Kyoshi Island and they're racing towards them. After leaving Kyoshi Island, Iroh accepts Zhao's offer of their partnership after Zuko convinced him not to tell anyone about the Avatar. Unfortunately, Zhao goes behind their backs by informing Ozai about it.

When he and Zuko finally captured Aang after June captured him for them, they reluctantly give up the Avatar to Zhao's hands. He warns Zuko that the Pohuai lies inside Fire Nation borders, so that's why he knew what Zhao's been planning against him. Later that night, Iroh eventually returns back to Zuko's ship where he explained how Zuko's sacrifice saved the entire 41st Division, including Lieutenant Jee. When Zuko returns back to his ship, Iroh was seen watching Zuko's army bowing at him and taking care of him when he's going to bed.

When they got to the spirit oasis, he once again warned Zhao not to kill the Moon Spirit, but has no choice to stop him once he refused to stop. After Zhao kills the Moon Spirit, Iroh began to attack him and the soldiers, causing Zhao to cowardly runs away. He went back to Zuko where he convinced him to escape the Northern Water Tribe together.
