Isabela Madrigal is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Bruno) of Disney's 60th animated feature film Encanto.
Isabela is the oldest daughter of Agustín and Julieta and the eldest sibling of Luisa and Mirabel. She is considered to be the golden child of the Madrigal family, whose gift is the power to conjure beautiful flowers and plants.
She was voiced by Diane Guerrero, who also voiced Jessica Cruz in Justice League vs. the Fatal Five and Crazy Jane in Doom Patrol.
Personality[]
Isabela was primarily known for being graceful, beautiful, and perfect both inside and out by everyone. She is referred to as the golden child by the family for her grace, and beloved by the town. She is shown to be very friendly, but she didn't initially talk much during the film. However, deep down, Isabela did not appreciate the expectations her Abuela set upon her to be perfect. She instead wanted to live life the way she wanted to, and expand her powers and growth the same way. Unfortunately, due to the pressure of being the golden child, Isabela hid these feelings away and willingly went along with whatever her Abuela wanted for her, even agreeing to get married to Mariano, showing a selfless side and loyalty to her family. To further add to this pressure, Isabela did not get along with her sister Mirabel, whom she believed set out to ruin her life, and so they often fought with each other, resulting in a mutual distaste. She showed this distaste by insulting Mirabel and ordering her to be quiet during the dinner, and later on by trying to force Mirabel to apologize for "ruining" her life, implying a temperamental and petty side to her. However, after she finally released her emotions (when Mirabel called her selfish) and grew a cactus, Isabela became free to finally live the life she wanted, and expanded her plant powers. She additionally reconciles with Mirabel, restoring her sisterly bond with her.
Powers and Abilities[]
Isabela can conjure and grow plants, causing flowers to bloom in her wake. She can also manipulate plant life. Originally, she only grew vines and roses, but later began experimenting with her gift and discovered that she could grow other kinds of plants as well, such as cacti, trees, and even carnivorous plants.
Biography[]
A young Isabela appears in a flashback where Alma Madrigal explains to five-year-old Mirabel Madrigal how each member of their family is gifted with magical powers. Years later, a grown-up Isabela appears getting up from bed when an older Mirabel opens her bedroom door.
Isabela Madrigal is Luisa and Mirabel's eldest sister, gifted with the ability to grow flowers. Due to this, her family often see her as perfect, especially Abuela Alma. Mirabel is often annoyed at Isabela's entitled personality. She is scheduled to be engaged to their neighbor Mariano Guzmán, who Alma deems a perfect match. On the night, however, Mirabel ruins the proposal by accidentally revealing a lost prophecy by their missing uncle Bruno, which everyone believes means Mirabel will destroy the family's miracle. Isabela is angered at this and chastises Mirabel; the latter, through a new prophecy by Bruno, believes she must hug the former to save the family's miracle. Mirabel insincerely asks Isabela for a hug, to which she refuses. However, as Isabela tries to force her to leave for her sarcastic apology, Mirabel complains about Isabela's supposed selfishness and entitledness. This prompts Isabela to complain about the constant expectation of perfection on her; how Mirabel only sabotages her attempts to conform with it; and that she never wanted to marry Mariano and was only doing so for her family. As she expresses these revelations, a cactus appears. Prompted by this unexpected plant, Isabela wonders what else she can grow and wishes people did not expect perfection from her. Finally understanding her sister, Mirabel assists Isabela in becoming more imperfect, and the two grow more flawed but beautiful plants. As they both stand right by the candle, they share a hug, fulfilling Bruno's vision. However, Alma sees them and accuses of Mirabel of hurting the family just because she was not given a gift. Mirabel then realizes that no matter how hard Isabela—as well as the rest of the family—tries, she will not be perfect enough for their grandmother. As Mirabel and Alma fight, their house, Casita, falls apart, and the family lose their gifts. After Mirabel and Alma reconcile, the family and the townspeople rebuild Casita. The Madrigals make a doorknob to complete the house. When it is put into the front door, the magic returns. Isabela gives herself a new look and continues to grow flawed plants, no longer burdened by expectations of perfection.
