“ | You don't understand how I feel. You have no f--king clue how I feel. It wasn't just the surgery, I had to move to another city. I left my friends behind, my whole life so I could start over. And when I finally have something, they take it away. You can give a little speech, but don't say you understand how I feel because you have no idea. (...) Your stupidity is f--king staggering! | „ |
~ Isabela's countercharge to the school principal about him understanding her transgender identity. |
Isabela de la Fuente is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Alex) in the first season of the Netflix series Control Z.
Isabela used to be one of the most popular prettiest students of National School and Pablo's girlfriend. However, her life took a turn for the worse when a hacker reveals that she underwent gender confirmation surgery.
She is portrayed by Zión Moreno who also voices her in the English dub.
Biography[]
Background[]
She was assigned male at birth and went by the name of Ismael prior to transitioning. On one of her birthdays she wished to be a girl. As a teenager she was able to change her sex but it caused problems at her old school so her parents decided to move to an other city and start over. Already at the national school, she formed a relationship with Pablo García and was considered the most beautiful girl in the school, but without anyone knowing, save for Pablo himself, that she was a trans girl. Despite being ashamed of sharing this piece of information, Isabela nevertheless joins the clique of popular students who look down on local outcast, Sofía Herrera. According to her, she and Pablo are known as the "high school sweethearts" and usually spend 15 minutes inside the janitor's closet having sex. However, Pablo cheated on Isabela with her best friend Maria, but Isabela is completely oblivious about this.
Season One[]
Pablo and Isabela are seen making out inside the janitor's closet where Isabela tells Pablo she considers telling her friends Natalia and Maria about her trans identity, to which Pablo is seemingly hesitant because if one of them knows, then the whole school would know too and also fearing what might his male friends think of them. Isabela states that she will tell them because she doesn't want to lie to them. Later on, while Quintanilla is giving a presentation to the school students about how to properly use their cellphones, however, instead of the topic a video about Isabela's birthday during her days as a boy is shown, thus revealing her secret to the entire school before she runs out of the auditorium in tears and explains to Natalia and Maria, who show support, why she had to keep the secret for so long. Pablo runs to check on her, with Isabela emerging from the ladies' restroom and wanting to embrace Pablo, who after seeing Gerry, Dario and Ernesto in front of them, backs away in shame and publicly feigns ignorace about Isabela's secret and publicly breaks up with her, just as Gerry and his goons start mocking Isabela. "You're an idiot!", Isabela yells at Pablo and storms off, with Natalia and Maria following suit.
Later on, the hacker texts Isabela if she wants to get revenge on those people who betrayed her: Raúl (who picked her), Natalia (who stole her cellphone) and Gerry (who was cued to upload the video), who all parttook in revealing her secret, and Pablo for his betrayal. Infuriated, Isabela replies "yes" and the hacker, at her request, ends up revealing their secrets to the school: Raúl's father is a corrupt politician, Natalia has been emblezzing the money collected for the school (thus resulting in her removal as president of NONA), Gerry watches gay porn (causing his girlfriend Rosita to dump him) and most importantly, her boyfriend Pablo is exposed to her as an unfaithful boyfriend due to nude pics of him implying that he has been having an affair (while he was still dating her) with another girl, only known as the "Honey Bunny".
During a Biology class, Isabela tells the teacher Gabriela that she wants to change partners; she doesn't want to work with Pablo anymore, also rejecting Natalia when she is chosen as a suggestion, the reasons being very obvious. Gerry again starts mocking her, which incites a fight between him, Isabela, Pablo, Javier, the new kid who enrolled mid-year and Raúl and Natalia, whom Isabella calls out for aligning themselves with the hacker, and Pablo trying to calm her down, to no avail. After Gerry makes a perverted comment, Isabela makes a childish tantrum and throws a glass vase at Gerry, which he dodges, prompting the outraged Gabriela to have all of them summoned to the principal's office to sort out their issues. Quintanilla explains to Isabela that he and the school are all supportive in regard of the LGBT community, also wanting her to know that he knows how she feels. Apalled by this response, Isabela angrily tells Quintanilla that he doesn't know how she feels, ranting about how she lost everything she's ever achieved after getting a fresh start. He can give Isabela a speech if he wants, but that he shouldn't say he understands Isabela because he doesn't before storming out of his office, criticizing how staggering his stupidity is as she leaves. Isabela is made fun of by Valeria and Regina over which restroom she should use because of her being trans, just as Alex comes to her rescue trying to defend Isabela from her bullies, at which point they leave. Still, Isabela rebukes Alex, saying she doesn't need anyone to stand up for her but starts sympathizing with Sofía, who has experienced a similar situation when she got admitted to a mental asylum. Natalia wants to know why Isabela keeps giving her the cold shoulder, although the reason is very obvious: she stole Isabela's cellphone. Isabela would never betray a friend like Natalia did to her when asked what would she had done if her own was threatened to be leaked.
Pablo apologizes to Isabela for everything, to which she asks if it's about either his cheating, denying her secret or dumping her in front of everyone. He insists that he wants to make things right with her, but she won't listen to any of his excuses. After Luis falsely claims to being the hacker (so that Gerry, Dario and Ernesto won't bully him anymore), and the real hacker arranges a fight between them, she witnesses Luis provoking her and Pablo (due to the hacker sending lines to his cellphone for him to speak) before she walks out as Gerry arrives to fight Luis, then the fight spiraling out of control when the rest of the students start fighting each other, ending with Luis being hospitalized by Gerry. Meanwhile, Raúl hosts a party at his house (after his parents left the country to avoid prosecution and provided him with large sums of money) and Isabela seems on the verge of attending, but backs out at the last minute and decides to stay home after Valeria, through a text message, keeps provoking her. When Isabela tries to call her parents to come pick her up, but never show up nor are they reachable, María decides to give her a ride home. Believing that María is the only true friend she has left, Isabela is comprehensive that she is only wanting to help Natalia because she is her sister and keeps on hanging out with her. Isabela says she is glad thay they're still friends, so María's face quickly turns serious and tries to tell her about her being the Honey Bunny, but only telling Isabela that she betrayed her. Isabela laughs in disbelief and says that she didn't. Later, she apologizes to Alex for how rude she was to her, but she understands that Isabela has to learn how to stand up for herself.
During the NONA party, Isabela arrives with Alex, as Dario and Ernesto start poking fun at both of them. Isabela finally has the courage and snaps back at Dario, stating that she doesn't care what some pathetic machist like him thinks about her. After María informs Pablo that she is pregnant with his baby, he abandons her and tries one last time to get back with Isabela. Despite Isabela's rejections, Pablo tries to get her to listen, but turning violent when she pushes and slaps him so he tries to rape her, only for María to come to her defense, leading Pablo to yell at her to mind her own business. Pablo then spitefully reveals to Isabela about Maria being the Honey Bunny, causing Isabela to end her friendship with her, before returning to the dancefloor with Alex and having fun like ever before, finally no longer ashamed of her gender identity. Isabela later watches the video when Raúl confesses to being the hacker to Sofía, thus turning the entire student body against him, but nevertheless ends up leaking the secrets of the other students, consequently causing them to fight each other in retaliation. Gerry accidentally shoots Javier threatening Raúl for being the hacker, the noise attracting attention as the students and Isabela rush out and look on in shock as they see Javier seriously wounded.
Season Two[]
Isabela doesn't appear in the second season, having dropped out of National School sometime following Raúl's exposure as the hacker. However, she is mentioned a few times and plays a somewhat pivotal role in this season, particularly regarding Pablo's new behaviour that meets no boundaries when he keeps on usually beating up Raúl, despite already knowing he is the hacker, when he returns to the school like if nothing happened. María is feeling guilty for having betrayed Isabela when she stole her boyfriend from her and considers dropping out of the school like her, but is talked out of it by Claudia, her new friend. When Pablo again attacks Raúl at his home and Gerry comes to his defense, Raúl correctly deduces that he is bitter over Isabela and that, despite their previous conflict over Isabela's trans identity, he did truly loved her, only that Pablo hasn't had the guts to admit this and face the truth, which inspires Pablo to try and make things right with María, who has refused to talk to him for not being concerned about her pregnancy, something that is temporarily left in naught as María and Pablo prioritize Natalia's safety after finding out she was kidnapped by drug dealers, whom she owes larges sums of money to. In addition, a picture of her can be seen pasted on a board made by Javier as he and Sofía investigate the Avenger, another hacker who terrorizes the student body in order to avenge Luis.
Trivia[]
- She is the first LGBTQ+ character to be revealed in the series.
- Just like Isabela, Zión Moreno, the actress who plays her, is a transgender woman in real life and was also bullied in her school because of it.
- Isabela did not return for the second season as Zión Moreno announced through her social media that she was unable to reprise the role due to both the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (hence remaining in the series would've affected her mental health) and her being cast for the Gossip Girl reboot, in which she would portray another wealthy trans girl, Luna La, who is villainous in contrast of Isabela. In-Universe, Isabela's absence is justified by María when she states that Isabela left the school on such short notice after the events of the first season.
- In the second season, there is no mention of Isabela after Pablo frames and exposes Sofía for harboring Gerry (when she only needed him to locate the Avenger and the only culprit is Raúl), who is wanted by the police for murdering Luis. However, given that Pablo posted this on his social media, it's possible that she was one of the people shocked about this piece of information.
- Even after María's death, Isabela did not return for the third season. All we get to see of her is a flashback back at the NONA party of her apalled reaction when Pablo (who in the present is seen coping with the incident) furiously reveals their secret affair to her prior to the hacker's exposure.
