~ Isamu fondly remembering Shunsuke Iwata |
Isamu Kumai a.k.a. Kumai the Fixer is the main protagonist of Strange Pictures, the debut novel of Japanese Youtuber and author Uketsu. Isamu is a veteran reporter on the case of the murder of Yoshiharu Miura, as well as Isamu's murdered colleague, Shunsuke Iwata. Isamu spends decades getting justice for Shunsuke by using the evidence, including drawings tied to the crimes, to get the culprit arrested.
Biography[]
Isamu was one of the most dogged reporters of his paper's editorial department, strenuously investigating ongoing cases, ensuring he'd arrive at crime scenes as soon as possible and gather all the information he could. Miura's murder was his final investigation, but this was when Isamu was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Isamu accepted he needed the treatment, and he planned to return directly to the field once he recovered, but the paper permanently transferred him to the administrative department. Three years later, Shunsuke was hired, and Isamu was his mentor. Shunsuke also wanted to be a journalist, as well as investigate the murder of Miura because Miura was Shunsuke's art teacher, and he assisted Shunsuke when he struggled to keep an income. When Shunsuke wanted to quit, as Shunsuke wanted to start his reporting right away as a freelancer, Isamu encouraged Shunsuke to stay for the income alone. But understanding how personal Miura's murder was to Shunsuke, Isamu gave Shunsuke the file on Isamu's own investigations into the crime. They poured over everything, narrowing down the suspects and determining the evidence leading them to such conclusions. Miura's friend and colleague Nobuo Toyokawa appeared to have the weakest alibi, so Shunsuke wanted to investigate him at Shunsuke's high school. Isamu gave recommendations to keep himself safe and still gather information, including paying a visit as an alumnus, not as a reporter. Shunsuke couldn't find Toyokawa, as he was in another prefecture, but Shunsuke did speak with Yuki Kameido, Miura's student who had a crush on him. Shunsuke went to the site where Miura was murdered to gain insight into the crime and find answers, but Shunsuke too was murdered by the killer: Naomi Konno, Miura's widow. Isamu was devastated, especially having to be confronted by Shunsuke's grandfather at the funeral. He vowed to solve the case in Shunsuke's name and get justice by whatever means. Unfortunately, Toyokawa was killed by Naomi as well, disguised as a suicide to make him a patsy. Isamu refused to leave the case at that, so he spoke with a friend and contact of his on the police force, Detective Keizo Kuruta. He was also rushing to solve the case fast, as Isamu's cancer returned. Isamu told Detective Kuruta he wanted to goad Naomi into an attempt on Isamu's life, which gave the excuse to arrest her and investigate her crimes. It worked, and after surveying Naomi to shake her up, Isamu was stabbed by her in an attempt on his life. Kuruta arrested her immediately, and her murders would soon be uncovered. Naomi's murder of Yuki, who would become her daughter-in-law, was brought to Isamu's attention by Shuhei Sasaki, a man who found Naomi's son Haruto's blog "Oh No, Not Raku!" while he was in college, which revealed Yuki's murder. Shuhei and Isamu met in the hospital where Shuhei was getting his broken leg treated and Usami was getting stitched up after the stabbing. Shuhei made sure Isamu promised to adopt Naomi's orphaned grandson Yuta, and Isamu followed through with that promise.
