Isao Shinomiya is a posthumous character in the dark fantasy action manga and anime series Kaiju No. 8. He is the Defense Force's Director General, the husband of Hikari Shinomiya, and the father of Kikoru Shinomiya, a current member of the First Division. He tested another one of the First Division Member, Kafka Hibino who was exposed as Kaiju No. 8, but Isao and the other staffs of the Defense Force decided to give him another chance after they tried to either turn him into a weapon by killing him. Unfortunately, Isao was later absorbed by Kaiju No. 9, leaving the rest of the organization grieving over his death, along with Kafka and Kikoru seeking to kill N. 9 to avenge him.
He is voiced by Tesshō Genda in Japanese and by Christopher Wehkamp English.
Appearance[]
Isao is a stern middle-aged man of muscular build with blonde hair parted at the back and beard all over his jaw and chin in sharp shapes and thick eyebrows. As the director of the Defense Force, he occasionally wears the standard black uniform with grey shoulder pads and cuffs, black trousers, and a pair of black boots, like the regular members.
Personality[]
Isao is a harsh and stern man with a highly forceful physilophy, demanding that Kikoru must become the strongest at all cost so that she does not meet the same fate as her mother, Hikaru, who was killed by Kaiju No. 6 in the past. Rarely showing any level of emotions, Isao is fearless and a strong person despite the traumatizing lost of his wife.
Regardless of his intimidating exterior, Isao does have a compassionate side, particularly in his interactions with Kafka Hibino. He valued Kikoru’s opinion about Kafka and chose to protect Kafka, defying higher-ranked officials to give him a chance to prove himself. Isao’s ultimate concern was the well-being of future generations, dedicating his efforts to securing a safer future and willing to sacrifice himself for this cause, mirroring his wife's sacrifice. As the one of the highest-ranking members of the firm, he was known for his strategic decisions, including the controversial use of living kaiju to bolster the Defense Force. Isao had a close connection with his spouse whome he dearly loved, resulting her death to have a significant effect on him. After her loss, he grew emotionally detached from his daughter, Kikoru, urging her to excel as an exemplary warrior to prevent a similar tragedy, which is a nature that is not also towards his former pupil, Gen Narumi.
